Internship & Goal Setting

12:30 PM- 2:30 PM

Multipurpose Room, NVC 1-107

This workshop was based on learning more about  Undergraduate Internships. All the students sat facing the podium, while two screens were set up for a powerpoint presentation. There was a female speaker (whose name I didn’t hear) who explained the whole internship process to us. She talked about the different types of internships there were: seasonal internships (fall, spring, summer), paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time, and college credit. I have never heard about college credit internships before so it was definitely helpful learning about it. Apparently, students at Baruch can participate in an internship for a class and get credit for it. I thought this was really cool and I hope to be able to do this sometime in the future. The speaker went on to talk about the benefits of participating in an internship and the experience that we can gain from them.

There were some discussion questions  during the workshop in which we talked to partners about our expected majors and our learning objectives. We also discussed how to make resume and how the Starr Career and Development Center can assist us with that. We were all given a booklet called Undergraduate Internship Manual that provides a lot of great information. There are sample resumes and questionnaires to help us out with anything we might need.I really liked this workshop and I would recommend it to everyone to take. The presenter was very clear and informative. She kept us engaged at all times and clarified a lot of things we weren’t sure about. I definitely learned a lot. She talked about the Starr website online and how to access that. It seems like a great tool for students, and I will be using that very soon. =]

Annual Student Services Fair

Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009

12:30 PM- 2:00 PM

Multipurpose Room, NVC 1-107

The Annual Student Services Fair consisted of tables set up in the Multipurpose Room. There were different representatives from different parts of Baruch waiting for students to ask questions. Some of the tables that I stopped by included Student Life, Financial Aid, Bursar Office, etc. I asked a few questions concerning my financial aid bill and I was able to fix a problem that I was having regarding it. The room was really packed so I mostly tried to get my ticket stamped and get to lunch. A lot of the tables had free stuff to give away to persuade students to stop by.

One of the best tables that I stopped by was the Starr Career Development Center table. There were a lot of fliers posted up on a board explaining some of the great opportunities that Starr offers to Baruch students. One of the representatives there talked to a group of us about some of the services they had including resume and job interview workshops. This office could assist students with writing a successful resume as well as teach them how to act in a successful interview when applying for jobs. I was definitely interested in this so I took a flier for future visits. I hope to take advantage of these services during my time at Baruch.

Eventually, my friends and I left this workshop. We were able to collect a lot of fliers and information.

Club Fair Event

Thursday, Sept. 24th, 2009

12:00 PM-2:30 PM

ARC Main Gym

I attended the Club Fair last week in hopes of joining a really cool club to keep me occupied. I’m not enjoying the Baruch life at all, so I thought maybe meeting some new people in a new environment would be helpful. Plus, my peer mentor suggested that I take advantage of this opportunity since it could benefit me in the long run. =]

When I got to the fair it was definitely in full spirit mode. Everyone was competing with each other to persuade people to join their clubs. It was definitely colorful and festive. Each club had a table set up and covered in numerous flyers advertising their central focus and/or activites or community service projects they have participated in. The clubs that definitely stood out were the sororities and fraternities. They had a lot of club members handing out refreshments and shouting out their names and stuff. It was definitely a great sight =D

I basically went around to most of the clubs to look at their fliers and talk to some of the members to learn more about what they were about. I stopped by the Baruch City Advertising Society (BCAS) table to ask some questions about the club. I was told that they do a lot of advertising in terms of creating fliers around the campus and they also invite a lot of advertising companies to speak to Baruch students about the Marketing field. I took a few fliers and moved on to the next table, but I did sign my name since it seemed like an interesting club. I went looking for the West Indian / Caribbean Student club and I found them towards the end of the club fair. I signed my name but it didn’t seem like they did much. All I was told was that there was an upcoming Binghamton Trip in the making.

My fav. part of this event was the dancing. Almost everyone gathered around the DJ and people from dance clubs started to perform for us. It was actually kinda fun and cool. There was this one kid that was krumpin’ which was pretty awesome 🙂 Overall, the club fair was good.

Career Exploration – Career Planning: Basic Interviewing

Title: Career Planning – Basic Interviewing

Category: Career Exploration

Date: 10/29/09

Time: 12:50PM

For this workshop, I actually registered for it so it would guarantee a seat for me. I was expecting them to sign us in at the door but that was not the case. The workshop was overcrowded with people. I thought they should have done something to limit the people who went especially those who did not register. When I got seated, a few minutes later the presentation began. The speaker went through many significant aspects of the interviewing process. We even did a mock personal pitch with the person sitting next to us.  The speaker taught us how to give a proper handshake and sit with good posture. Also, I was given a packet of information about interviews.

I think this is my favorite workshop. It was very informative and what I learned from the workshop will definitely help me with interviews. The packet is very uesful and will serve as a guidebook for me. The PowerPoint presentation enhanced the workshop experience becacuse it highlighted the important ideas and goals of an interview session. I learned many things I did not know about. I did not know about thank you letters prior to this workshop. The speaker gave us many tips to do well in an interview. I felt like Baruch is truly preparing us with such a good Starr Career Development Center. I think the Career Exploration workshops are essential for all students. I am actually interested in going to another Career Planning workshop because of the great experience with this workshop.

Internship & Goal Setting

Career Planning: Internship & Goal Setting.
Thursday, October 22, 2009 12:30pm – 2:30pm
VC 1-107

The workshop took place in the multipurpose room and was set up quite similar to freshman orientation. There were rolls after rolls of chairs facing the platform. The PowerPoint were shown on projector on both sides of the room. Upon entering the room, students were to line up so that they may enter their names into the system for attendance. The Baruch Internship Coordinator was very organized and on schedule. She started the workshop promptly at the scheduled time. Those who didn’t sign in were to do so at the end. A booklet with information on resume building and internship details were placed on each chair. The coordinator then proceed to explain the information in the PowerPoint and the booklet.

The workshop was very helpful. The coordinator explained each factor clearly and with much detail. It was a good idea for the coordinator to plan group activities and asked questions. It provided interaction with audience and kept them engaged. Personally, I believe that the coordinator did a great job of presenting the materials to the audience. She answered questions and provided many useful information. If anyone wanted to intern, it would be a great a idea to visit her in her office.

student service fair

This event was really crowded. I’ve noticed that every time there is an informative event, the event is ALWAYS packed. I was really angry because it was hard to move around. Baruch should regulate the events in a better manner to make it worth while to go. Other than that, this event was the most interesting event so far. Topics that interested me were sports, studying abroad, financial aid, writing center,  and Starr.

This event had the total package. By attending this event, I was able to learn most of the inquiries I had. For example, I am interested in joining a sports team as well as studying abroad. Also, writing is NOT my forte, therefore, the writing center will be a big help. the STARR career center will help me with my future job. In conclusion, I am really grateful for this event, for I was able to learn about the academic sectors of Baruch.

Annual Student Services Fair

Student Services Fair
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Multipurpose Room, NVC 1-107

The Student Services Fair, held in the multipurpose room, offered many different school programs that helped students with different aspects of college life. Rows after rows of tables were lined up. Some of the people were friendly and, with a smile, beckoned shy students forward. Some of the tables even offered free items to attract students. There were tables set up for those with learning disability, those who are interested in honors programs, those who need help with financial aid or writing. There are so many programs offered to students that one is for sure able to find the one that they need.

One of the programs that I thought was helpful was the Starr Career Development Center. The program offered help to those who do not know what to do when it comes to applying for a job and preparing for it. This program helped these people with their resumes and even held mock trials of a job interview. Another program that I found beneficial to students was the Writing Center. The Writing Center is not only for people who are weaker when it comes to writing, but also anyone who might want someone professional to read over their writing pieces and make corrections. This program allows students to make corrections before handing in a writing assignment. The Student Services Fair is helpful, especially to freshman because we do not know where such programs’ main offices were held. It gave us a chance to find out more about programs that may be much help to us throughout our years in Baruch.

Student Services Fair

On October 13th, I attended the Student Services Fair. Similar to the club fair, this workshop also had many booths offering explanations for various services and programs within the college. Unlike the club fair however, this one had legit, professional representatives who kept their descriptions concise.

I spent some time at a bunch of booths including the Starr Career Development Center, Athletics at Baruch, Testing and Evaluation center, and Baruch Honors College. I had to attend at least ten such booths in order to have the workshop card completed (ten stamps). One memorable booth of the fair was at the Toddlers program (or something like that) which provides a Day care center for parents attending Baruch. I am not yet a parent but the lady who represented the program stamped my card and did not shoo me away; she was very professional.

Of the various services, I know I will at one point or another utilize the Testing center and the Career. However, this fair also made me interested in the Honors classes which I may soon look into. Overall, the fair was helpful.

club fair

I went to the club fair. It was bit crowded. It was well organized. I had a good time. I went and saw most of the clubs. I joined the mac club, wall street club and the ticker.

I joined the wall street club because of my interest in the financial market. I think the financial field is interesting field. It has a lot of techniques to be learned. I feel by joining the club I may be able to learn a lot in that field. I joined the mac club. I feel mac is cool and i got fed up with using PC. Even though i don’t have a mac i joined the club since i could rent a mac for day from the library. Mac has quiet good stuffs when compared to PC.
I planned to join the chess club since there is no membership in the club i just played a game. I lost the game but it was fun. I went around all the clubs. At the time which i went some of the clubs were not yet opened. The club activities would have been still have been good if the space was quiet big. It was a good experience

Annual Student Services Fair

When I first entered the Student Services Fair, it was really crowded. Before I went around the room filled with tables, I was given a card in which I was suppose to get it punched from the people at the tables. Many of the tables that I went to gave me a lot of useful information. Some of which included Sports at Baruch, Studying Abroad, Financial Aid, the Writing Center, Starr Career Development Center, and the Testing & Evaluation Center.

I was particularly interested in the Starr Career Development Center and Writing Center the most. By going to the Starr Career Development Center, it will help me find the right major, polish up my resume for my future jobs, as well as Mock Trial interviews. On the other hand, since writing papers have always been my weakness, I ought to improve it by making appointments and visiting the Writing Center. There, they will be helping me fix up my grammar issues, the writing skills I need to further improve my writings, as well as revisions. Hopefully by doing so, there might be some improvements on my grades.
