Global Awareness

Diversity and Internationalization on 9/14, Room 750 12:30

I headed to the workshop not knowing what to expect and whether it would be huge audience since the seating was limited. On arrival, there were tables placed next to stage where Baruch had invited Professor Vaughn from Stony Brook to speak. The workshop started with a speech from our President followed by a introduction by the Dean of Liberal Studies. Professor Vaughn went on to discuss the critical role of globalization in the education of our nation’s colleges. These new graduate/undergraduate programs that are forming are all promoting globalization. He also discusses the four major interglobal studies.  They are Institute of Global Studies, Undergraduate College of Global Studies, Research, and Globalization in Migraine Cultures. His speech was really intricate but interesting.

After his speech, there was a panel of Baruch professors/students who spoke about their experience with diversity and globalization. The one I found especially interesting was that of a professor who told a story about students who weren’t able to attend classes they wanted because of their lack of English speaking skills. It was extremely heartwarming and showed how diverse and understanding this College is. The workshop ended with table discussions of how we, the students, can improve diversity and welcome it in our school.

Student Life – Club Fair

The club fair was crowded to the max! It was really hard to get in and out because there were so many people. When I was finally able to get in, I walked around the whole gym to check out all the clubs and societies. Out of them, I found a couple of clubs that I was interested in. I signed up for KCCC (Korean crusade something christian), FES (Finance and Economics Society), and the Archery club.

I wanted to join the apple club but it was so crowded that I didn’t even bother. They were giving out free shirts and bags and even now, i wish that i joined. Tomorrow I’m going to go meet the KCCC at bryant park for a social outing. I’m really glad that I was able to participate in the club fair because it helped me get familiarized with the baruch club life.

Club Fair

Date: 09/24/09

When I first entered the club fair, the gym was congested with students. Inside, I saw all different types of clubs that Baruch has to offer. I wanted to go look at all the clubs and somehow I managed to after walking around for an hour or so. While walking, there were a few people that came up to me and wanted to recruit me into their club. At first I was scared because I didn’t expect people to actually come up to me and tell me about their clubs. However, they were all friendly and they really made it sound like their club is interesting. That’s when I decide that I should probably join a club so that I can expand my social life.

In the end I joined four clubs. Two of these clubs that I joined were for fun. They don’t have any weekly meetings other than to have fun and compete with one another. The other two clubs on the other hand, do have weekly meetings and it’s always best if you attend them all. I didn’t want to sign up for clubs that always involve commitments because it might lead to stress with school work and etc., that’s why I chose half and half.

Club Fair

The club fair was very crowded.  It took me a while before I could browse through all the clubs.  There were a few recruiters telling us about their club but I wasn’t too interested.  I didn’t really want to join anything academic.  I wanted to join clubs where I could have fun and relax for the time being.

I joined three clubs on Thursday.  They were GLASS, Billiards and Bowling, and also Handball Maniacs.  GLASS is the only club that has weekly meetings.  The other two clubs are just events so hopefully my club activities won’t clash with each other.  I’m really looking forward to my first club meeting next week.  It’ll definitely be a new experience!

Student Life – Club Fair

Title: Club Fair

Category: Student Life

Date: 09/24/09

Time: 12:30

The club fair was quite crowded today. However, it did create a good atmosphere. I did not know where to begin with clubs so I just walked around with my friends. I was more of looking for academic and career clubs, not lesiure clubs. At every table, the representatives were very friendly and explained what the clubs were about and its goals. I signed up for five clubs including Apple Student Club and AIESEC. The Apple Student Club is a club where you learn how to use the MAC to its potential and abilities. The AIESEC is an organization for study abroad opportunities and programs. I really want to study abroad especially in France and Japan which is why I signed up for it.

I thought there would be more clubs and organizations at the club fair today. Everybody were friendly even when I did not want to sign up with their club or organization. It is recommended because every student should be in at least one club. It is a great way to expand your social and academic circle. I am interested in some other clubs but I am going to join next term. From this workshop, I got a more thorough understanding of Baruch and how it is like especialy with events.

Library Tour

For the first day of the Freshman Seminar my group, Learning Community 19, went on a tour of Baruch’s Newman library. This tour was very informative, especially because we found out about the different floors of the library and what they had to offer. I spend much of my time in the library because of the long breaks in between my classes and I am glad that I attended this tour because I learned a great deal about the resources the library has to offer, and the different places that I can go to to study or read.

The reading room seems interesting and a lot of fun. I hope to visit it and find a great new book to read. and the reference desk also seems like it will be a huge help in my studies at Baruch. It is also very convenient to be able to borrow textbooks from the library so that I don’t have to cary mine to do homework.

Thank you very much Michelle for a great tour!

Library Tour

The library tour was the perfect workshop to begin college with. A couple of weeks has passed since that initial excursion into Baruch life, and it is clear that outside of classes, I will spend a great deal of time in the library. Aside from the workshop showing-off all the neat and comfortable places to relax and study, other lesser known and less obvious facilities were also made clear.

I had no idea that we would be allowed to borrow laptops and calculators (if we got there early enough) or that we could print and copy certain amount of pages that were paid for before hand by our technology fees. All these services will be very helpful; the printing has already proven to be of great assistance as our English professor has us print chapters in excess of 30 pages.

Overall the library has a very welcoming atmosphere. It appears very high tech and cozy with more than enough computers, study pods, and sofas to accomodate any study session. The news that the library is open all the time during finals week only reinforces this helpful support system. I expect to take full advantage of the library during my college career.

Library Tour

I didn’t attend the second orientation on August 28th so I wasn’t able to go on the library tour due to a personal issue I would rather not share. I have only been in the library once or twice since the start of school. I expect the library to be like most other public libraries except it will contain more college related books. From what little I’ve seen of the library, it looks pretty decent. I like the layout of the library. There are a lot of computers to use and a lot of study space. I also like how the spiral staircase looks. I think its pretty cool lol. I should probably take advantage of the library here at Baruch, but I don’t know if I will.

library tours

The library tour on Aug 28 th was good.It was short and a sweet session. It gave an idea about the library in the Baruch and how to use the facility in that. It was useful in the later days since i could access some of the facilities like photocopying  and printing independently. It saves me a lot of money. I could use the library during my free time for studying and doing my work. I usually spend the afternoon in the library. The laptop and calculator lending was also useful. If  it was said 2 to3 days before it would have been better i would have got it  for my math. When i came the calculators ran out. Totally it was an informative session

Library Tour

Hello, this is Joo Ho Hong and I don’t really have anything to talk about the tour that my class had two weeks ago since I wasn’t there. The thing is I didn’t attend to the freshmen convocation on 27th so I was not informed that I was supposed to go to the library on the first class of this semester. I went to a wrong class on that day and it was silly.

However, my expectations of using the library is to get advanced information, to be able to study quietly in private section, and to borrow things such as labtop, calculator, books, and so forth. I have been using the library almost everyday since the first day of school and so far, I am satisfied with it. Even there are like a bunch of sofas that many people can have rest or relax. In my opinion, that is the best part because people need to have a break time to time while they study or concentrate on their work. And the sofas are able to give them rest just so they can restart doing their works more efficiently.
