A Gallery Tour of Mercedes Matter

On Tuesday, I visited the Mercedes Matter art exhibit on 135 East 22nd Street from 1-2pm. The guide started immediately when a new batch of spectators entered the room and the audience was led to an array of still life paintings. The selection included landscapes and many other abstract compositions. A piece in particular that caught my attention right off the bat was a table top still life. I am sure a fusion of blots of bright and bold colors, interlocked shapes, lines, and shades will catch anyone’s eyes! As the tour progressed, the guide would occasionally stop and ask the audience to put their thinking caps on to delve beyond the aura of red, yellow, and blue and ponder on the artist’s intention. I thought the tour was worthwhile because it taught me to look at a piece of work from multiple perspectives. A table top still life can appear bland and undemanding but if manipulated the right way, it can give the impression of being very complex; simplicity is underrated.
