Although on paper, a workshop that helps prepare you for your next (or first) interview sounds extremely helpful, in practice it was unthoughtful and excessively long. All of the advice given was solid, but most of what I heard I probably could have just as easily heard from my parents or friends. The speaker was very articulate and seemed to be organized, and it seems as though a one on one meeting with her may be very promising. The depth and significance of your resume was actually the most important thing I learned that day.
Basic Interviewing Tecniques
Student Services Fair
I did not like this workshop at all. Most of the people at the workshop (myself included) were just there to get a signature. In anticipation of this, the faculty decided to have a fail-safe plan where each student had to get ten “holes punched.” The workshop was basically a room filled with different stands and speakers, and each hole represented a different stand. The speaker at the stand would “punch” your “hole” after you and the speaker spoke for a while. However, this just created an anxious tension in the room and the speakers were definitely aware of that. It was in fact very tedious to get ten holes punched, because I’m sure even the most wide eyed eager student would not have had ten specific questions for ten different stands. Also, the there was very little space in the room, and it was annoying to have to squeeze by ten different bodies just to get to a stand a few feet away.
Heyyy!
So it seems like I’m a little late to the blogging party. Well, I’m feeling a little down because the Knicks just lost (after playing so well against Pheonix) and the Nets still can’t seem to pull together a win. I was in such a good mood too, because of the LC21 chill session we had today. By the way, we should definitely do something like that again.
Managing Relationships in College
I went to this workshop on 10-08-09. It was almost two months ago-_-, we were told to stand up and make 3 new friends in 10 seconds!!everyone was standing talking to their friends…and later a student was picked and asked who he had made friend with and he tried to make up a name but when he was asked where did “his friend” sit he just couldnt answer that question LOL. that’s all I can remember-_-, but I think to manage relationships in college is not that hard…i guess.
Student Services Fair
I attended this workshop long time ago so, I don’t really remember the date, I think it was on 10-13-09. It was crowded there, I did not really ask too many questions because there were too many students so I just want to get my card punched and get out of the crowd -_-
Career Planning: Basic Interviewing
On 10. 29 I went to this workshop with Hong, I remember that I saw this on the weekly calendar for the freshman seminar and it had a link for us to pre register, so I asked Hong to register with me in case there would be no seats for us. but when we got there, there was still no seats for us even though we registered for it. At first we were standing in the back but later the staff gave me some chairs.
Bake Sale.
On November 17 we had a bake sale for UNICEF. I brought some cakes for the bake sale, when I was on the train the box kept shaking, I just worried that all the cakes would “become one big cake” -_-.
After the Japanese class I went to the bake sale with Hong to see if we can help with that and then we went to get some food. After lunch we went there again and I found that the cakes I bought was priced $2.00 each but I bought them $2.25 for each..Oh we lost money in the business!…lol… anyway it’s for UNICEF so never mind.
Immigration-Religion
So I attended a lecture on immigration and religion, primarily focused on immigration between Germany and Vietnam. I found this interesting because I didn’t even know there was such mass immigration between Vietnam and Germany. I also learned that there were “contract workers” which by their name, were immigrants who only lived in Germany to work under a contract, and after the contract was over, they were forced to leave. The actual lecture itself was hard to follow, because the woman giving the lecture had a slight accent and was using sophisticated vocabulary combined with a droning voice made it hard to pay attention. Though when finally the floor was open to questions, I actually became more interested in what was going on. It seemed interesting to be in that field of work, being able to travel around the world and live in the area you are researching on. Overall, it was a pretty good workshop, though the woman could have been more engaging. I’m just glad I finished these mandatory workshops.
UNICEF Bake sale
So, in order to prepare for the bake sale, I helped Michelle and Helen make cake pops.It was a really messy job and since it was our first time making it, I felt that we failed. I ended up going home and making cupcakes for the bake sale, hopefully they sold. As far as the donation collecting thingy, I just used some baking container and printed some stuff out to make it kawaii. Overall, I thought it went pretty well.
Clubs-History
I’ve never been to a club fair, and history club was my first club at Baruch and it was a different from what I expected. In the club meetingwe talked about what was going to happenat certain events and what other things people wanted to do. I thought this was fair because everyone should have a say on what the club’s funding should go towards. I was suprised to find out that anyone could run for president of the club. Also anyone from any major could run.
Turns out theres going to be a history party or something of the sorts on Dec 10th. There probably will be an attendence of professors so maybe Professor Trumbach will be there to talk about his book. Just a heads up. Overall, I think the experience of attending an actual club meeting versus a club fair is better.
