I wish I had some positive things to say about the panel discussion considering I was looking forward to it, but I don’t.  I could barely understand what any of the panelist were saying.  I recognized one lady from the panel that was, I believe, present at the convocation in august.  From what I heard, she pretty much saying the same things about her background that she had mentioned during convocation.  I was pretty excited that Charles Li was going to be there considering I really enjoyed his book, but then I could barely understand what he was saying.  The panel was a nice idea and a good effort to expand our knowledge on the Chinese culture however it definitely did not meet my expectations.

             Like what others mentioned, the panel discussion was very boring. The volume of the microphones were very low and I cant hear what Charles Li talked about. It seems the speakers were just talking to themselves and nobody paid attention on them. I think there should have some staffs to remind students not to talk and make sure the volume of the microphones are loud enough so everyone can hear the message of the speakers. When i looked around, i saw many people were playing cell phone or lap top. Since most of the students didnt pay attention, I fell asleep too. To conclude, I believe the discussion can be better.

This panel discussion was extremely boring. Even if i wanted to listen i couldn’t because it was so loud in there. I even think i saw Charles Li Na’s wife in there talking while he was talking. I didn’t know what they were talking about or the message they were trying to convey. There is nothing really more I can say about it. It was just a waste of my time.

Going to this career workshop I was intrigued in what they had to say. It was a an hour long workshop listening to the STARR person speak and how to make a good resume and get a good career. I felt that most of the things that she spoke would be much easier obtained if I went on the website and looked about all the things she said myself. However, the resume part was a very useful way to inform us about how to write a strong one and what a resume is for and not for. I believe the interview part was a waste of time though because most of it was common sense and it felt like after a while, she just kept reading through the power points and it became repetitive. I do give her props for maintaining such a good attitude throughout the whole presentation because a lot of people of the audience didn’t seem to be paying attention or wanted to raise their hand to help her out.

In spite of the huge audience, I figured they would do a good job in making sure that they would broadcast the speeches better and make sure we were all able to hear it clearly and understand it. I was actually interested in hearing what Charles N. Li had to say when coming here and it was nothing but a big disappointment. I was unable to hear what they were talking about most of the time except for the beginning when the first guy from Baruch was speaking and introducing everyone. After that, it started going downhill, I wasn’t able to hear anything and thus I lost my interest in the discussion.  It was very hard to interpret what they were trying to say the whole time and I wasn’t the only one, I hope in the future, they raise the volume or make them speak more clearly or something better than this one.

I thought the Career Workshop was a good incentive and informative presentation. It had me thinking about what i would do in the situation that i want to apply for a job, and hopefully get interviewed. The presenter gave us all a good suggestion to visit the Starr Career Development Center, and i will be sure to do that in the future. It gives me a shoulder to lean to for my future needs. I’d probably have tons of trouble writing a resume and even going to an interview, i know that for sure haha. But the presenter clearly labeled out in her presentation what the major components of a resume consist of, and what attires we should wear to the interview, and what to expect at an interview. I thought the sheets she gave out were helpful as well. It makes me realize how dull my resume and social skills would be, which is pretty much the only negativity i got out of it. But overall i thought it opened up people’s minds and got everyone thinking about it. Also i actually learned something from this!

I thought the Career Workshop was really helpful. The lady explained everything thoroughtly from how to write a resume to how to act and what to expect during a professional interview and she introduced the career center. I think this workshop prepared us for the future because sooner or later we are going to have to write a resume and be interviewed. The Starr Career Developmen Center is just anther useful resource provided by the school to the students. It gives us an opportunity to succeed in the real world because it helps us locate jobs and internships that are available in the market. These will  better prepare us for our future job as we gain more experiences.  The lady even made this experience interesting and funny at the same time. It was so much better than the panel discussion

So if I want to get a job, I could just go to the Starr Career Development Center website and look for a job that interests me. And if I have trouble writing an resume or want to practice, I could schedule an appointment for a resume review, or a mock employment interview. That sounds great.

The East-West Identity: Journeys & Transformation was okay. I thought we could get a better seating. Maybe it was because we were all the way in the back or  it was the microphone, I didn’t get to hear everything they said. But I did get to hear Charles N. Li taking about reality. He had a good insight on reality. Charles Li and Katrin Hansing talked about their life experience and from which they discovered their identity and they all seemed to suggest that most people find their identity while studying in college.  I hope what they said was true. I believe professor katrin Hansing said that “college opens up a lot of opportunity and we are given more options”. I don’t want to be too critical but one of the panelists used too many “you know” and it looked unprofessional.

I thought the Panel Discussion could have been better.  I was originally excited to hear what Charles Li had to say and present, but when we got there, I had no idea what he was saying.  From his book, I thought his English would be impressive but there was something about the way he spoke that made his words indistinguishable.  But the panel did have some interesting points, from the few words I could make out, Charles Li mentioned about how a person’s identity is always changing with culture and time.  It was also interesting to have so many people from different backgrounds sit in the same room with us.  However, I think it was harder for us to pay attention to the panel discussion because we were up in the balcony, could barely hear what was being said, and the focus was on the people sitting on the floor.  I personally think it would have been more effective if it was a smaller group and the audience had a chance to interact with the panel more; the discussions would probably would be able to connect with us better that way.

I cannot say I necessarily liked the panel discussion, but I also cannot say I didn’t like it because I could barely hear most of the things said, which I would have been interested in.  Overall, I would rather have a discussion with the panel in a smaller environment.

I felt that the career building activity was okay but i felt that the lady who was talking just kept repeating herself. It could have been shorter than what it was. Also, there were some technical difficulties with the projector and computer. They should have been more prepared and the projection on the wall should have been bigger.

On the other hand, it taught me how to make a good resume. This is very important and will help me when applying for a job. Also, it taught me how to prepare for interview. Honestly, I probably just would have went into an interview without knowing what was going to happen but now I have an idea of what to expect. The websites she gave us I thought could come in handy in the future.
