Rubin Museum of Art
(three posts in one day. whoohoo =D)
I thought the museum was interesting. I love art so I was curious of what I was going to see.
Most of the Himalayan art was in red and they were about gods and their stories and their connection with other gods and people. The stories told are pretty interesting. But, I felt that the images are very dark. The gods are illustrated in a way that makes them look evil, even if they were good. And the gods of destruction and evil look really creepy and scary, especially the huge golden mask hanging on one of the floors (I forgot which one…).
And it was interesting to see the change in style as I went up to the different floors. When western, Christian art starts appearing, the images of the Himalayan gods are shown lighter skinned, and have more human-like. Their expressions seem softer and there is less killing and destruction depicted in the art.
And all of the art was so detailed and every small part of the sculpture or drawing/painting seemed to be carefully and purposely planned. That skill and patience is worth it when you look at the final result!
I can go on and on talking about the little things I saw. But overall it was very interesting and I enjoyed it.

Academic Workshop
Another workshop where most of the information was redundant to me… Not that I know everything, but I went to the advisement center with Aiko last month and had a one on one session with an advisor, which I felt was easier to understand and learn what classes we need to take. But, I did learn some things like how it would be harder if I wanted to major in liberal arts; we would be required to take 2 science classes (and I am not so great in science and I hate how it gives me headaches…) and, by asking liz, I found out that I can’t double major in Zicklin and we’re not allowed to minor in business. After that session, I felt myself start to worry about what I’m going to do with the next three years here. But I think I’ll figure out eventually…
The workshop was helpful, especially since most freshman are so lost about how everything works in college @_@.

Career Workshop
Personally, I found the workshop pointless. It probably would have been very helpful and informative to people who have never been told how to dress for success, create an efficient resume, and how to perform well at a job interview. But, I almost fell asleep from boredom. I took four years of business class in high school so all that was said in the workshop was what I was disciplined to do for that class. I tried to pay attention and took some notes, just in case I could learn something new, but I didn’t. I’m sure there were people in the room that didn’t know how to build a resume or what to expect during an interview so I wouldn’t say it was a waste of time. I guess I was able to reinforce all that I knew by listening to her speak; to make sure I remembered what I learned in high school so, to me, it was a good review.

Panel Discussion
I thought the Panel Discussion could have been better. I was originally excited to hear what Charles Li had to say and present, but when we got there, I had no idea what he was saying. From his book, I thought his English would be impressive but there was something about the way he spoke that made his words indistinguishable. But the panel did have some interesting points, from the few words I could make out, Charles Li mentioned about how a person’s identity is always changing with culture and time. It was also interesting to have so many people from different backgrounds sit in the same room with us. However, I think it was harder for us to pay attention to the panel discussion because we were up in the balcony, could barely hear what was being said, and the focus was on the people sitting on the floor. I personally think it would have been more effective if it was a smaller group and the audience had a chance to interact with the panel more; the discussions would probably would be able to connect with us better that way.
I cannot say I necessarily liked the panel discussion, but I also cannot say I didn’t like it because I could barely hear most of the things said, which I would have been interested in. Overall, I would rather have a discussion with the panel in a smaller environment.

monologue
Early morning I wake up warmly wrapped on my bed;
Leaving my dreams of bright days into a dark and cold room.
The sky is so gloomy with a new day ahead–
It’s so unwelcoming I don’t want to move.
To get up and enter the busy city streets
Filled with millions of faces I may never meet.
A mesh of faces of different colors, different size,
People who blend in, people who stand out.
But in the end they all have the same thing in mind.
Without a doubt it’s a single track mind:
“I need to get here. I need to get there”
And you better watch out if you dare to interfere.
Their eyes show concern for their troubles for their problems.
So wrapped up in their world they forget about the world.
So caught up in me, myself and I,
There’s no room to stop or to say hi.
But it’s okay, it’s alright
I’ll just do my thing and live my life.
This peace I got is contagious;
People get dumbfounded by patience,
Kindness makes them stop and think,
And their hearts change when encountered with innocence.
So, I’ll live as me and I’ll do my thing
I won’t let the crowd and mesh get to me
Avoiding the mindset of just me in my life
So my conscience is free of the thought:
“You’re just like the others.”
