Sidney Mishkin Gallery

The Sidney Mishkin Gallery visit was okay because I didn’t really understand the drawings and I found those drawing to be very strange. All the drawing were by Hans Hofmann and almost all of them were black and white. The artist mostly used charcoal, watercolor, crayons and ink to do his painting. I noticed that on some of his drawing he only used shapes including squares and triangle to  create images and portraits of woman, some of which were naked, man and fox. On one of his drawings there was a lot of scribbling and i don’t see how it is a piece of art but I guess it is.  I know the purpose of this visit is to lead us to discover new qualities about ourselves but I didn’t find any new qualities about myself.  It certainly didn’t trigger any thoughts and maybe it’s because I wasn’t really looking into the drawings in depth or maybe it’s because I just don’t understand  art.

Sidney Mishkin Gallery

The gallery was not to my artistic taste, i don’t really like this kind of abstract art, to me i dislike it when art seems to be distorted in different ways, going beyond normal constrictions on nature. Some art had a display of colors to signify a meaning while others were plain black and white. I am not trying to say that Hans Hofmann or his students are bad at art, their art is just not to my preference. I would have liked it if the art was more concrete based, or something i actually understood. The place was pretty small, and the time range for the art was from the 19th and 20th centuries. So overall………it did not interest me.

Sidney Gallery

The Sydney Gallery was very interesting. It had all abstract art which focus on basic geometric shapes. There were many different paintings of squares and rectangles. There was also a section of art depicting the humans. The artist shows that they were not really into human anatomy. It places a lot of emphasis on the breast of humans. Many of the artwork used white and black. However there were about 3 pieces of artwork that used bright colors such as green and yellow. There was one artwork of a fish.

I thought that this gallery had artwork that I don’t understand or don’t know how to appreciate it. I don’t understand what kind of theme the artists are trying to allude to.  Overall, I did not feel enriched by this visit to the gallery.

Sidney Museum

I anticipated much more before going to this museum with my classmates. I didn’t realize it was inside one of the Baruch administration buildings until I went. It was a small museum where the art didn’t appeal or make any sense to me. It contained much paintings that looked similar and very abstract such as just squares and lines to vague naked pictures of a woman portrayed very oddly. Many of the pictures seemed like variations of these squares and lines and these women. None of them appealed to me but it was fun to go there with classmates and seeing them make video recordings of the museum with us in it. I didn’t like having to go there because it was sort of odd going there since it didn’t really feel like a real museum with just about 20 or so paintings and its just a few of my classmates free walking around the area.

Academic Workshop

Okay well i liked this workshop, told me what i needed to focus on, how many credits i need, and especially alarming me that i need to get my stuff in order. Taught me what courses i need to take first in order to get into the Zicklin school and which ones i should take next semester. The lady up front knew what she was talking about, but her aide i kinda thought to myself, “piss off.” But anyway, yeah i thought this was pretty helpful in outlining my needs, and open up my mind to what the best course of action i should take is. And i know i’m going to definitely minor in Chinese.

career workshop

I think the workshop had some benefits like teaching us how to write a detailed resume, what to or not to put on the resume and the format of a resume. It also talked about how to do in an interview such as how to dress up, the way to talk and some tips for interview. The speaker also showed us how to go through their website and get a list of internships in Baruch. By the way, I believe many students should already knew most of things mentioned in the workshop.

Post 4- Academic Workshop

This was BY FAR the best and most helpful workshop that we have had till date. It completely helped me change my schedule; before the workshop, I was taking theater and no science, but now I have added Physics and Eco 1001 to my schedule. It was especially helpful in the fact that the lady leading the workshop was telling us which classes are good ideas and which classes are highly recommended at out current positions. But one thing that I absolutely DID NOT like was the fact that even though she had a microphone, she refused to use it. Also, although this was the best workshop we have had so far, it was a little boring- she was a little monotonous and could have made the workshop a little more interesting. Combined with the microphone issue, I found it a little hard to focus on what she was saying. But other than that it was a very helpful event.

Post 3- STARR Career Workshop

I felt that the STARR Career Workshop was actually very interesting, despite the fact that I have used it before. The powerpoint was pretty helpful; I particularly found the slides about the different types of resumes- I didn’t know that there were different types of resumes for different types of positions. I also didn’t know that you were not supposed to wear cologne during the interview process because the interviewer might be allergic to the scent (which is odd because when I went to my interview, the woman that was interviewing me said that my cologne was fresh). But the thing that I found best was that the lady leading the workshop had an intern she named “Vuh-Vek the Tech”, I thought that was hilarious. Overall, it was good, but also a little repetitive at times.

Career workshop

A speaker came on the behalf of Starr career development. First she talked about their website. Although she struggles with technology, she showed me what the website offers. The website is updated very often and each time there is a list of jobs and internships that are available. Resumes are written in two different ways: chronological or functional. She gave me advice on how to format a resume and what should I pay attention to. During an interview, there is a difference between being aggressive and assertive. Assertive means that one is trying to sell oneself to a company. Aggressive is when one is trying to force oneself upon a company. Another piece of advice is that one must clean up their image online. With facebook and Twitter going, people are bound to check out these websites to get an impression.
Following the resume process is an interview. The keys for having successful interview is summarized by the 4ps; preparation, practice, punctuality, and post etiquette. The PAR is an acronym which stands for problem, action, and result. This method is used to describe accomplishments.
People need to dress more conservative and look professional. Overall, I thought this interview was very informing.

Academic Advisement Workshop

This workshop was the one that I felt was not a waste of time. However, it was hard to hear her in the beginning and some parts and I didn’t understand why she couldn’t use the microphone. I felt this workshop helped me give me a sense of direction of what to do and where to go so I know what classes I can register and should register for. I liked how she gave several options such as good options, highly recommended and high priority one. It sucks that I register on nov 23rd when its about 2 weeks later than initial registration, I hope I get an early schedule that I want. In addition to that, I hope I won’t need much help when I’m registering for classes on the 23rd because I wouldn’t want to wait 2 hours to see an adviser to know what to do.
