Rubin Museum of Art

(three posts in one day. whoohoo =D)

I thought the museum was interesting.  I love art so I was curious of what I was going to see.

Most of the Himalayan art was in red and they were about gods and their stories and their connection with other gods and people.  The stories told are pretty interesting.  But, I felt that the images are very dark.  The gods are illustrated in a way that makes them look evil, even if they were good.  And the gods of destruction and evil look really creepy and scary, especially the huge golden mask hanging on one of the floors (I forgot which one…).

And it was interesting to see the change in style as I went up to the different floors.  When western, Christian art starts appearing, the images of the Himalayan gods are shown lighter skinned, and have more human-like.  Their expressions seem softer and there is less killing and destruction depicted in the art.

And all of the art was so detailed and every small part of the sculpture or drawing/painting seemed to be carefully and purposely planned.  That skill and patience is worth it when you look at the final result!

I can go on and on talking about the little things I saw. But overall it was very interesting and I enjoyed it.

Academic Workshop

Another workshop where most of the information was redundant to me… Not that I know everything, but I went to the advisement center with Aiko last month and had a one on one session with an advisor, which I felt was easier to understand and learn what classes we need to take.  But, I did learn some things like how it would be harder if I wanted to major in liberal arts; we would be required to take 2 science classes (and I am not so great in science and I hate how it gives me headaches…) and, by asking liz, I found out that I can’t double major in Zicklin and we’re not allowed to minor in business.  After that session, I felt myself start to worry about what I’m going to do with the next three years here.  But I think I’ll figure out eventually…

The workshop was helpful, especially since most freshman are so lost about how everything works in college @_@.

Career Workshop

Personally, I found the workshop pointless.  It probably would have been very helpful and informative to people who have never been told how to dress for success, create an efficient resume, and how to perform well at a job interview.  But, I almost fell asleep from boredom.  I took four years of business class in high school so all that was said in the workshop was what I was disciplined to do for that class.  I tried to pay attention and took some notes, just in case I could learn something new, but I didn’t.  I’m sure there were people in the room that didn’t know how to build a resume or what to expect during an interview so I wouldn’t say it was a waste of time.  I guess I was able to reinforce all that I knew by listening to her speak; to make sure I remembered what I learned in high school so, to me, it was a good review.

Career workshop

I thought this workshop was a good idea but it ended up teaching us a lot of things we already knew. I guess one good thing about it was that it tried to teach us how to create an affective resume but everything else with the interview i thought was stuff we should already know. She also said some things that i didn’t think were completely accurate.

Career Workshop

To be honest throughout the whole thing I wanted to just get up and leave, but since I had to stay and listen I did listen and it was actually very beneficial. The lady who was presenting seemed like a very nice person and I felt like all of her advice was sincere. We learned what to wear to interview’s, what to say in interviews, how to answer some common interview questions, what NOT to say in interviews, how to format and write a resume, what to put in one, and so many other things which i found to be very useful. I like how they handed out sheets for us to look back at if we decided to not pay attention during the presentation. So basically this was far better than the Panel Discussion since I was actually able to hear what the lady was saying and it actually helped me in some way.

Career Workshop

Basically we learned how to write a resume. Your name should stand out the most aside from your address, email and phone number. You should also avoid extra space as it can cause distractions. To prevent stutters and nervousness, be prepared and know plenty about yourself. The workshop also showed up how to make our two minute pitch and how to promote and advertise ourselves. Overall the workshop was great. It prepares us for our future job/career hunting days.

Dare to Engage

We live in a world where people make stupid decisions every day without thinking of the consequences of their actions. Tuesdays dare to engage breakout session focused on the Tyler Clementie case. As everyone knows he was a college student who was videotaped with another guy by his roommates. The roommates then posted this video online. The shame that Tyler felt for his sexual preference made him commit suicide. The breakout session focused on the affects media had on the privacy of people, mainly the gay and lesbian community. We discussed the dangers of cyber-bullying through social networking websites. It stressed that we should accept other peoples differences because there is nothing wrong with them. I can relate to this because I had a very close friend who was gay and was blackmailed by other students who did not accept his personal life choices. It was a difficult thing for him to get through and for me as a friend to see him suffer, no one should have to deal with those types of ignorant people who can’t accept someone who doesn’t fit into their idea of what is the norm and what it acceptable.

Career Workshop

The career workshop was overall pretty informative.  Knowing more about how to out together a resume well and how to conduct yourself appropriately during an interview is very relevant to us and was very helpful.  Although the presentation was informative, the speaker was not impressive.  She didn’t even introduce herself so I don’t know her name.  She was very corny and tried to make too many jokes and just came across as slightly ditzy and unprepared.  I will however take the information I learned from the presentation and use it to my advantage.  As I start to apply for jobs, it is crucial that I use the tips that I learned from this workshop to help myself look better on paper for the companies that I send my resumes to, and it’s crucial that I use the tips that I learned about the interview process so that I can make a good first impression on the interviewer

Panel Discussion

I wish I had some positive things to say about the panel discussion considering I was looking forward to it, but I don’t.  I could barely understand what any of the panelist were saying.  I recognized one lady from the panel that was, I believe, present at the convocation in august.  From what I heard, she pretty much saying the same things about her background that she had mentioned during convocation.  I was pretty excited that Charles Li was going to be there considering I really enjoyed his book, but then I could barely understand what he was saying.  The panel was a nice idea and a good effort to expand our knowledge on the Chinese culture however it definitely did not meet my expectations.

Blog about the Panel discussion

Like what others mentioned, the panel discussion was very boring. The volume of the microphones were very low and I cant hear what Charles Li talked about. It seems the speakers were just talking to themselves and nobody paid attention on them. I think there should have some staffs to remind students not to talk and make sure the volume of the microphones are loud enough so everyone can hear the message of the speakers. When i looked around, i saw many people were playing cell phone or lap top. Since most of the students didnt pay attention, I fell asleep too. To conclude, I believe the discussion can be better.
