It’s funny how I’m writing a post about who I am, because it is similar to my centralized idea in my college essay. Often if not always I am judged based on looks, half the people I meet assume I am of Hispanic background. However, there is no truth there; I am a black-filipino, reigning from the islands of Barbados and the Philippines. I have been judged and stereotyped based on my looks, half the time I want to scream out, “Stop stereotyping me with a culture I’m not even apart of!” At times I get disrespected by people of my own race based on my skin tone. It only reminds me that racism still exist on all sides, that looks are the highest point of judgement for almost everyone, that you’ll find out how truly unique or different a person is by breaking your comfort zone.
Of course that is not the only thing there is to me, besides being one of the first mixed children in my family, I am a stepper, or entertainer if you prefer. I state this because it has become an extremely important part of me. It is not dancing, it is stepping, we were and still are a family. I stepped for two years and received the name and title, Big Sister Dynomite, obviously it’s cause I’m good, or maybe it’s due to the fact that my nickname is Jay-J and there is a J.J. on the TV show Good Times, his slogan was “Dynomite”. I’d go with the second choice. But, as said this is one of my biggest achievements, we are 3rd best in the city and 5th nationwide, who wouldn’t be proud to label them selves as a stepper.
Lastly, when it comes to the term who am I?, I can also refer to myself as a dreamer with ambitions ready to achieve. I have goals set for myself, goals that I will reach with friends along the way. I mean, I am in college with aspirations to graduate and go where I want to, am I not? So as a girl with ambitions, I have a lot of steps to go before I can pass the stars, but I will pass them.
