the 3rd workshop

I attended the workshop “EOC Job$mart Panel: Networking: Is it who or what you know?” on December 6. It was a really useful workshop. I learned networking is really important in today’s world. And I began to realize it is a true fact that most jobs found today are through the networking.

There were two guest speakers in this event. They were Christine Ippolito and Jodi Brockington. They both have very successful businesses. Christine is one of the founders of Compass Workforce Solutions. And Jodi found the NIARA consulting.

In this workshop, they answered many questions about the networking. For example, when one asked how to build network, they answered there are three main ways. One is the family and friend, so it is really important to make more friends, they may give you information about the jobs, or invite you to work with their company. The second one is the school. As we all know, many companies come to our school to look for people, so school is really a good place to start build your network with the companies. They also mentioned we can find network through charities, such as library, community service. We will have a chance to meet more people there. So it is important that we should be more involved in the community.

They told us when we went to a workshop, conference or any events. If the speaker is the one you really wanted to know, there are many strategies for you to be known by the speaker. You should try to be there early, so you may have an opportunity to talk to him individually. You should also try to sit in the front, and try to do some gesture or express your emotions when the speaker was looking at you. It shows you are interested at what the speaker says. You can also send the speaker emails, or post on the speakers’ Facebook even if it is just one or two sentences.  These things will really be helpful for you to be remembered by others.

They also mentioned that most jobs today are posted online first. And I didn’t realize how important the website linkedin.com is until they talked about it. They told us most companies today look for people through linkedin.com, they will search the key terms in this website, and look at these people’s profile, so it is really important to have a linkedin.com account, otherwise they will not be able to find you. And we should be careful about what we posted in this website. We should post the real information there.

Although it is just one hour, I felt I really learned a lot from it. I realized the networking is really important today. We should all try to be more socialized in our community.

community service

In my community service project, Soobin, Tayeba, Jason and I participated in an elementary school afterschool photography program. There were about seven elementary students. They would have a tour to the Rubin Museum of Art. Our mission was to take care of them while they visited the museum. We helped to make sure the kids were safe during the tour.

I was really excited when I heard I would have to do a community service project. I thought it would enrich my college experience and life. And I would have a chance to meet more people and make more friends.

I am more than welcome to give my time to the community. I felt happy and proud that I can contribute to our community. It’s really fun. It also makes me feel more confident and socialized.

I learned it’s not easy to take care of kids. It is not easy to take the responsibility. The kids were very active. They liked to walk around. I had to keep my eyes on them every second. I knew I would have trouble if something happened to those kids.

The most trying experience that occurred in this community service event was when we tried to go to this program the second time. We realized the school was closed because it was Veterans Day. And we didn’t know that until we arrived the school. We were all very disappointed. I learned we should always checked things in advance.

In the Rubin museum of art, their major focus is the Himalayan art. We saw a lot of artworks that are related to Hinduism and Buddhism. So I learn many things about these religions. It also shows the religion play an important role in today’s society.

In this community service event, I had to take care of the kids. So I have the responsibility to make sure the kids are safe. We are like the leaders of these kids. I can feel the burden to take the responsibility.

After the community service, I really enjoy it. I think it is a really good experience to help others. We can learn many things from it.

I learned I should be more socialized in the community. And I want to do more community service in the future.

I was really satisfied with my experience overall. I enjoy the whole events. I learned many things about the Himalayan art and I learn how to take the responsibility. The kids are really funny when answering the  questions.

I think I am still not active in the community in my college year. I didn’t join any clubs, and take part in many community events. The main reason is there is too much work to do in the college. But I believe when I began to feel more comfortable in the college, I will be more involved.

To Sum up my service-learning experience, I will say community service not only help the community and others, it also benefit yourself.

Blog #3

Before I went to Baruch College, I expected myself to be more confident. I thought the classes will just be as easy as the classes in my high school. But as time goes on, I find such expectations are not easy to accomplish.  I am still not confident enough, especially when I speak English in front of many people. I feel my paper will always have many grammar mistakes, and feel unconfident if I do not go to the writing center. The classes are way more difficult than what I thought before. There are lots of readings to handle for one day. These readings are tough and long. I often misunderstand the materials in the reading, or totally did not understand what it says.

I think my first semester is OK. I believe I can do better as I become more comfortable with the college life. I am happy that I meet many new people. They are all very nice and helpful. I also feel good that I can finish so many essay assignments and exams successfully. But I am still nervous about the coming final week. These exams will be really important for deciding my final grades.

If I could do my first semester again, I will definitely manage my time better. I still remember in some days, I went to bed until the midnight just because I had to finish my readings or the essays. I felt so regret at those nights. I told myself I should start to read these articles or write my papers three or four days before. I also think I should be more socialized in our campus. I should try to join some clubs; it will give my college life more fun.

The time passes so quickly, my first semester in Baruch is almost done. I feel I changed a lot. I become more independent. I realize the college professors will not chase you to do your homework. It is all on our own. It is all about our responsibilities. It is all about whether you want to get good grades all not. I also feel I become more responsible and determined. Although there are a lot of work to do, and they are really hard, I never run away.

community service

Against the intuition of the most of you, i did some community service and that independently if not so recently, because I missed the other members in the central park and I was somehow left out or maybe not wanted from beginning .Anyway, compensating for this, I instead did my community service at a middle-size public library in the Forest Hill, which is near to my apartment. Basically, what I did is nothing more or less than sorting out books back to shelves so that others could find books with ease and smooth. As you can observe, I am not such a person as will take on this of my own will, unless this is a requirement, which was indeed very effective at talking time and energy of me the people including my supervisor at the library was very indifferent to me, so I am to them, overall contributing to the rarefied atmosphere of alienation. From this experience, I find out organizing books pretty boring and tedious, to the extent I could give up at anytime but it is a requirement. As far as I am concerned, I doubt at the existence of any significant correlation between community service and my education or even larger issues in society. As a result of this experience, I overwhelmingly consult each of you not to do sorting out books as your community service, although this seems to be popular among those in the dark. I almost cut off me emotionally from my community or even my family in that loneness not only consumed me and became my best friend I ever have. I am so introspective that I could not but be opposed to the community service seriously. If with free, you are better off appreciating art. by the way, I am so poor as to ill-afford to have any camera, so that I do not have any visual photo of my being there. So trust me.

in light of  the fact most of you little think highly of the music I make you listen through my laptop, I reckon most of you, if not all, somehow miss ear for music, let alone eye for paint. I do not want to go so far as to generalize that the poor are lacking in taste or sense of art because their parents fail to install such values in them , but it is pretty miserable that so few went to the Robin Museum of Art, let alone appreciate arts inside it. Indeed, I felt lonely on my way for lack of any companion and got lost for a while. Robin Museum is medium one, let us not complain about it too much but at same time not praise it too much for what it is. Main exhibition seems to me deal with eastern or maybe just Indian religious stuff, which turn off me in that I can only appreciate and fond of Western arts. Only on the highest floor, I found some pieces possessive of touch of Modernism, which movement strikes me deeply. I am not such a gadfly as to sell you on the idea that you must appreciate art. I also have no reason to go museums despite I used to visit at them as a social courtesy. I actually have been to some museums with the educated and the respected since this is the manner and way of interaction that the bourgeois do. Out of poverty, some of you may just are anxious for going ahead in world, but before this can even happen, you must sophisticate yourself so that you might be accepted into the class above that of your. For me, being to museum is by no means a hobby, much less a luxury, but is a necessity and requirement. By I write out of not so much snobbery as sincerity. by the way, it occures to me that the contents of the display is Art of the Himalayas

My first semester at Baruch College almost has done. now I am trying to summarize my first semester. In the beginning of the school. I felt so  excited because I could learn more knowledge and know more people. The the college is completely different with the high school. Professors’ teaching style is more  open than that of the high school teacher. I have more free time. As the  time past, I find out that the college become more and more difficult.

The philosophy is a difficult course. this course requires us to keep thinking thinking and thinking. it’s hard for me to follow the professor’s idea. also the reading materials challenge my poor reading ability. they are so complicated to read for me. finally, I did not drop this course because I don’t want take again. maybe someday, my reading ability be improved, I would like to learn more about philosophy. It is a really  thoughtful course.

I think the freshman seminar is really helpful. It tried to help us transit from high school to the college. It help us adjust the college culture. It  teach us how to deal with the college essay and how to do the research. through the freshman seminar I know more about the college and help me have a good experience in the college.

in the college, one of my expectations is building up friendship. friends are important to me in the college. when I was in trouble with the classes. I always can get help from my friends. Also the time management is a challenge. I hope I will manage my time much better next semester.

3rd workshop

First, I really do not know what should I write.

My third workshop is Job Search Strategies.  This workshop taught us about how to get job in the future.

I learned a lot, for example In present time, the economic is in the bad time, we might take 3 to 6 months to get job after we graduate, sometime it even might take double time.  We need to understand ourself first, them the environment which is best fit for us, and we should also understand the current market.  I also learned that the importance of Networking.  And we have a lot of resource that we can use.  We can use those resources to research market, it is very helpful for us to find a job.

I got more strategies which help me to get job in the future.  For example, we can consider new growing sectors, we can expand the geographical area of our search, we can apply to government positions, we can go to graduated school, etc.  The most important thing is that do some research about ourself, every skill and interest we have, every value we believe, every personality we are, those are all helpful to find a job.

I am going to attend more workshop which can help me in the future in different way.

Community Service

1.  My community service is called “Walk with Us to Cure Lupus”, this Walk provided a opportunity about a voice to people affected by lupus, we can ask more people to support or pay more attention to this, this Walk can also raise some fund for finding better treatment.

2. I think it is good to do community service project, I am not surprise or any hard feeling.  I like to help other people.  By the way, I am boring anyway, I have time to do this.

3.  I feel good and glad to give my time and energy to others, it makes my time be meaningful.

4. I learned about there are many people who need our help, we should give our hand to them if we have time.  Since my community service is a walk, I actually got a chance to talk a walk in Manhattan.

5.  This walking is not my first community service, but it is my first community service just about walk.  I learned that we do not need to do too much to help others, a walk or a speech can help a lot people, and make more people to pay attention to this.

6. Engaging in this project relate to my education about helping others, our professors are not just teaching us knowledge, but also teaching us how to become a member in society.  Community service is a big part of our life and our society.  As a member of society, we should make our society better.

7.  My community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session by engaging, we can become an example or model to others, we can inspire or encourage others to do community service.

8.  My community service experience changed my a lot.  First, I did some researches, then I know more about Lupus, I want to pay attention to those who had Lupus.  I want to help those people, I want more people to support them.

9.  My community service experience impacted me a lot, I want to spend more time and energy to help and support those people who had lupus.  The most important thing I learned about myself throughout this experience is that we can help others by a very small thing or detail.

10.  I was satisfied with my experience overall, because this community service is easy, we do not need to do much, we can help others just by walk.

11.  I will stay to involve in the community during my college and adult years, because I want to help others, I want to be a meaningful person to others, to society, and to myself.

12.  Walk with Us to Cure Lupus, every step is learning experience.  Let’s go.

ps: I thought I was a question-answer blog.

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.—–Albert Einstein

My first semester at Baruch College is nearly complete, my overall feelings about Baruch College are pretty good.

A. My experience at Baruch College has lived up to my expectations.  I have much free time, Professor will not ask you that why are you late? Or why do not you hand in assignment?  All responsibilities are hold by ourself, and only by ourself.  We will get any grade we deserve.  Some thing exceeded my expectations, for example the amount of homework assignment, and every test is essay.

B.  I think my first semester at Baruch College did not go very well.  Because I did not like to talk or answer questions during the class, but some professors think that participate is one part of grade, so I think it will hurt my grade.  And most of my professors give us essay as test, I am very disappoint about this, because writing is my No. 1 weakness.  I got a lot of grammar mistakes, and I hate writing so much.  Two out of five professor will give us grade only depend on the test grade, and all their tests are essay, I have no idea about that how bad my grade will be.  (PS: God bless me.)

C.  If I could do the first semester all again, I would go to writing center more times, it can help my writing skill.  And I would drop my philosophy class as soon as possible.  It is not because I did not like that professor, but he only gives us grade base on three essays, which I definitely did very bad on every time, even I have improved my grade.

D. Since I started at Baruch College, I changed a lot.  I started to spend more time in library.   Homework assignment costs me more time, I have to read very long article or story.  For example:In this weekend, I have to read about 150 pages of a book for English, couple chapters of Bible with questions I need to answer, one chapter of Anthropology book with two article, 20 – 30 pages each, one chapter for philosophy, and do some researches and writings for my public administration class.   I have never expected this, my friends told me that “high school is work-time, college is party-time” when we were senior of high school.  But that is not true, we need to work very hard in college.

For next semester, I will have most classes on Monday and Wednesday, and one class on Tuesday and Friday.  I hope I can do better (I believe I can do better), and have no thought about dropping any classes.  By the way, Good Luck to everyone.

community service

I join a walking of The Alliance for Lupus Research(ALR) on October 22,2011. It is a national voluntary health organization in New York City. Through the walking, we hope more people care about the Lupus problems and help those people who are suffering Lupus.

When I heard that I would join this community service project, I felt excited about it. This is my first time to do the community service. I felt happy that I would contribute my time to help other people. There are thousands of people join the walking. they all are benevolent. They are willing to contribute their time and money to help other people even they don’t know who they are. trying to help others whatever you can do that’s what I learn from those people.

During the community service, the most trying experience for me was the long distance of the walking. we need walk several miles from the beginning to the end. I think I need more exercise to improve my physical strength. After walking, I felt exhaustive. I am so proud of those people who finished the entire walking. They can finish the walking because they not only have good physical strength but also they have faith in their heart. they believe what they do could help more Lupus patients.

If we want more people to pay more attention on a larger society issue, we need congregate the power of masses. We know that the individual is so weak, but when we come together for one goal, we would have much more power to accomplish the goal. To congregate that many people to work together for the one goal, you should have good skill of communication and you should be charismatic.

I know that when I live in a community, I am a part of this community. I need to do something to improve the community, like other people are willing to help the community. throughout this community service, I learn that I even you do something small you also can help other people. so you can’t have any excuses to not to do the community service.

I satisfied with my experience overall, because this is my first time to do the community service and I learn many experience form the service. I will keep trying to join the community service. When I do the community service, I also help myself because I am living in this community. the community is good and I also feel good. I am so pleased to join the community service. it is my pleasure to help other other people.
