Third Workshop

On December 7th, I attended a workshop called “Writing Winning Resumes” hosted by STARR. It made me notice a lot of things that I never noticed before, and it also made me learn the significance of writing a good resume.

The instructor firstly went over the different types of resumes that different careers that may require.  I never knew that there are so many types of them. Through the speech of the instructor, I gradually learned that the resume is the first impression to your employer, which a good resume can catch the first sight of the company and make you outstand than the others in the first place, but at the same time, even a little single mistake that you make in the resume can let your impression down, thus when we are writing a resume, we have to notice every little single detail that may cause the damage of our image.

Others things that the instructor went over, such as put your skills, work experience, etc. in the resume are pretty much the same as I heard from my other friends who are working now, but the instructor put things in a more detail way, like how to make them organize well and look pretty good overall.

All in all, this workshop really helps me a lot, and I believe that after this workshop, I can have more confidence to write a good resume to make my image up.

Workshop

On December 6th, I attended a workshop called “Networking: Is it who or what you know” This workshop is talking about networking, how networking is important and teaches us how to build our own network. The workshop has given me a lot of helpful information.

There were two instructors at the workshop. They give us the opportunity to ask the questions. I have learned a lot through their responses. They explain that there were three types of network. The first type was family and friends. And the second was career. And the third was our interest. It means we can find something we really interest in. We could build our network with the people who have the same interest. It also is helpful if we join a club or participate in an event. But we need to actually participating and make yourself stand out.

Building network is helpful for finding a job. The instructors were introducing a website called “linked in”. It was a business related social networking site. They advice us to start building up a profile and add some peers. It not only helpful for us to building network but also find a job. As the instructors explain, there were some companies would look for people through this website. And the people in your social network might lead you to a job.

I was wondering to create an account at linked in. At the same time I think I have nothing to fill out for the profile. I don’t have any job experiences and activity. This workshop not only gives me a lot of helpful information, but also makes me think of my future. Right now, I was only a freshman. I should start to build the foundation of my network. I should start to join the activity and the events at school.

My college experience

Time runs fast. There are only two weeks left before my first semester at Baruch College end. Recall from what I wrote at my first blog post, I wrote about what I concern about for my freshman year. My experience at Baruch had made me accomplish a lot of what I expect.

One of my expectations is friendship. I have made a lot of friends through the first semester. I almost get to know everyone in my freshman seminar class. Now this semester is going to end. It will be few chances for us to have a same class together. I hope I could meet more people and make friend with them later on. Another thing was the improvement of my English. I felt that I have a little improve but I still need to work harder. I hope I could really improve it in later day at my college life. I most concern about my grade. I expect to pass all my classes. I can’t tell what my grade will be only if I get my report card. I still need to work harder for my final exams.

In my first semester at Baruch, I had put in much effort but I think it wasn’t enough. I can’t satisfy what I have done so far. The reading materials for class are hard. Sometime I didn’t finish my reading assignment. I just give up when I saw a lot of difficult words. Another thing was time management. I thought I could manage my time better if I am not that lazy. I always do my assignment at the day before it was due. If I have a chance to start it again, I would read all the reading that required for class. Reading could help me to understand the lecture. I also would not put everything at the last minute. But I can’t rewind time. I hope I can improve my weakness at my next semester at Baruch.

There are changes since I started at Baruch College. I become more responsible for my study. There are a lot of works I need to work independently. I need to superintend myself to do the right thing and manage my own time to study in order to get a better grade. There are a lot for me to get improve. I will continue to work on my weaknesses in order to make more positive changes.

Community Service

Our group went to the breast cancer walk at Prospect Park for our community service project. This inspiring event is to celebrate survivorship, to honor breast cancer survivors, and to raise money for American cancer society.

When I first hearing that I would be engaging in a community service project, I thought it would be wasting my time and energy. I thought we should focus more on study and assignments. I change my mind after I participate in the breast cancer walk. The service site was crowd. It was full with people from different culture and age. I was wondering why there were that many people were participating. What have motivated them? There was not only the breast cancer survivors were participating, but also the people not related to them. They make a stride for these survivors. I felt this world is full of love. There were a lot of zealots in our community. Even the little kids, they were participating.

I felt satisfied to give my time and energy to others. Although the help I could provide are little, it was significative to me. This community service project gave me a chance to fulfill my responsible and obligation to our community. The most trying experience that occurred was the walk is too long. The total distance was 4 miles. We had been thinking of give up. We thought of just took a photo and leave. When we looked at the people around us, we felt shame if we leave. Finally we kept on until the end. I had learned about persist in something and contribute to our community can be meaningful.

Overall, I felt helping others are pleasure and meaningful. I hope I could stay involve in the community during my college and adult years.

The third workshop

I have attended the workshop called “Networking: Is it Who or What You Know?” on December, 6. This workshop was talking about how to build your networking and how the networking improve your career opportunity. A good personal networking will bring you more opportunity to get into the better jobs. During the workshop, the two instructors answered many specific problems from the participants. This is a helpful and informative workshop.

The two instructors were Christine Ippolito and Jodi Brockington. Christine is the founding of Compass Workforce Solutions. Her expertise is focused on employer compliance programs and processes specific to Federal, New York, New Jersey and New York City employment laws; the design, development and deployment of compensation plans; and full life cycle recruitment, selection and on-boarding programs. Jodi is the founder of NIARA Consulting, a full service marketing and business development company. She utilizes her more than 15years of the experience in the nonprofit, corporate, and government sectors to consult for individuals, nonprofits, small businesses and corporations, as well as offer career and college coaching for youth and professionals.

As they said, we generally have three types of networking. they are family, schoolmates, and professionals. To build up our networking, we need to find out what we really interest in. and then we can find out the people who have the same interest. we can build up the networking with people who have the same interest more easily.

It’s important that we should contact with people to build up with people, like when you join a meeting, you want to build up your networking with others, you need to talk to other people, and whatever just do something that makes people know you. If you do not have idea who you need to talk to, the speaker of the meet is the best target. It’s hard to star a talking with a stranger. you can ask some easy to begin the conversation. like, what is his name, what makes him interested. Also you need treat people differently with different levels. fist you need figure out the level of the person and what he really wants to talk about.

sometimes, we can’t fulfill everybody’s requirement, but we can give something instead. If someone ask you for a job, but you can’t give him a job. you can not tell him that I don’t have a job for you. instead, you could said if there is a good opportunity good for you, I will let you know. you should be helpful to those we network with as possible as you can, we one day also need help from other people.  As we ask help form other people, we need ask the things that  people actually can help you. For example, if we want a job in a company, we can not ask people can you give me a job. we can ask if you know someone works in that company, then we can build up other networking with that people. Don’t make the people feel awkward.

Blog 5- 3rd Workshop

On Wednesday Dec. 7, I attended a workshop hosted by the STARR. The title of the workshop i attended was Writing Winning Resumes. Just like the title stated that is exactly what our instructors talked about, how to write and improve our resumes. At the beginning of the workshop the instructors went over the standard forms of resumes and what to do and not to do while writing a resume. She also went over a concept of a “fit” resume. That is the resume should be aligned with the type of job that your applying to. Shortly after, the instructors divided the class into small groups of four to  five students and had us do an exercise that required the use of proper language in order  to make our resumes as efficient as possible.

What i thought was the most interesting information was when our instructor told us that the email that you put on the resume should be professional. Although, it might seem like obvious information, it made me realize that the employers will be judging every aspect of you and even a childish email or a spelling error on your resume can cause you to lose a job.

Blog 4-Community Service

The way our community service helped our community was the walk helped not only to increase the awareness of the dangers and harms of lupus, but it also encouraged people to exercise.

My initial reactions to hearing that i would be engaging in an activity that would help our community was excitement. I was excited to be part of something bigger than myself and that I would have the opportunity to help out my community by giving something back.

Again spending time and energy felt good. It was nice to be doing something that not only I enjoyed, but also something i knew would better out community.

I learned that there are many people that would give a lot of their time and energy to do something they believe is right.

Well, the community service didn’t really change my way of thinking significantly, however it did help increase my aware of the importance of finding cure for lupus since it affects many lives.

The most important thing I learned throughout this community service was what lupus is, which is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue.

Yes, I do see myself involved in the community because if i do so not only will it benefit the community, but it will also benefit me when i decide to look for a job i will be able to say that i gave back to the community.

On Oct. 22, my group went on a walk help by the The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), which is a national voluntary health organization based in New York City.

Workshop – Write Winning Resumes

I attended the workshop at Starr Center that taught us how to write a winning resume. The workshop provided us with what employers are looking for in a resume. Resume is the first impression that you give to the employer that you are hoping to work for. Resume is an important part to help you get a job. Resume is the start to any process of getting a job and as the start is always the most important step to successfully obtaining a job.

The instructors at the workshop give us a step to step process to writing a winning resume. The little details in a resume can make a big difference out of the many that the employer might read through. I’ve learned that organization is the most important part to the first glance at a resume. Having an organized and easy to read resume is half way to success. Without a clear and organized resume, the employer will not spend time figuring out what is where. The instructors also taught us how to write our past experiences and skills into a way that is specific and show the important skills that we have gained. The last most important part to writing a winning resume is to look for the skills that we have that would fit into the qualities that the employers are looking for. To emphasize a quality that the employer is looking for can help us obtain a job position.

Overall, I think this workshop was very helpful to writing an outstanding resume. I think this workshop has provided me with a lot more knowledge about writing a successful resume. I highly recommend others to attend workshops at Starr Center because I’ve gained so much more information and knowledge about obtaining job position at one workshop. Starr Center provides very helpful knowledge to college students about the careers in the real world.

my college experience part three

Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit. There is only the question: When will I be blown up? Because of this, the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat.

He must learn them again. He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed — love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Until he does so, he labors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust, of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion. His griefs grieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands.

Until he relearns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.

The Third Workshop

On December 6, I attended a workshop called “Networking: Is it Who or What You Know?” It talked about the importance of networking and how to do it better. Networking is about the connections with different people who can help you in some different aspects, such as finding a job, updating the information, or getting new perspective. A strong networking can bring a lot of advantages to a person, and we can learn lots of things from other people.

There were two instructors in this workshop; they said that we have some different areas to build up our networking, such as family, schoolmates, and some professional organizations. Or we could find something we are really interested in. Actually, we need to check out what we really like, stand out, and then do it. When we do it, we will find some people have the same interest; it is easier to develop networking with those people.

In order to develop networking, first we should connect to people, meet people and communicate with them. We can ask them some questions and think about how to continue to communicate with them. So we need to find out the level of a person, and what he really likes to talk about. If we have a large networking, we should have a good schedule for that. Learned to how to do good time management is also an important step for developing networking.

For some reason, we can’t give everybody everything that they want, but we can give something instead. If someone wants a job, we can’t give him a job, but we can tell him if there is an opportunity, I will tell you. It is better than to say that I can’t give you a job. We should be helpful to those we network with as possible as we can. We help others, we will be remembered, and when we are in need, others can help us as well. But we should ask for things that people can definitely get. For example, if we want some information for a company, we can ask if you know someone work in the company, then we can build up other networking with the people work in the company. Don’t make other to be in an awkward situation.

I think the workshop is informative and useful. We can ask questions, and then discuss in it. Actually the networking is important in our life. We should work for it. And I am pleasant to attend this workshop.
