Community Service

Our group decided to join the Breast Cancer Walk in Prospect Park as our community service.  We went to Prospect Park to walk for breast cancer, not only our group, but also hundreds of people walked for fundraising for breast cancer at that day. It was a big event.

When I first heard that I would be engaging in a community service project with a group, I thought it might be a good opportunity to help people in need, I was glad to help others. I thought we should do as much as we could. Finally our group decided to walk for breast cancer. It took us about three hours walking for four miles. When I first heard that we needed to walk for four miles, I didn’t think I could finish it. At the beginning, I start to feel tired. In order to help others, we should persevere unremittingly, so we never gave up, and kept walking until we finished. I was exhausted, but when I finished it, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I found all people might have unlimited potential. If we wanted to do something, then took the action and redouble our efforts, no matter how tough it would be, we would overcome all the difficulties and accomplish it finally.

Since we did the community service with a large group, there were many other groups did the community service with us as well, the leadership became important at that situation. I thought we always needed a leadership to organize us, so we could be more effective and efficient.

I thought the community service experience changed me a lot. It leads me to greater dedication. Even if it would spend my time and energy for helping others, after that, I could feel content in my life. I thought I should be generous in giving help. And my attitude of life became more optimistic. The community service experience built up my willpower as well.

I was satisfied with my experience overall, even though it was an exhausted task, after finishing it, I got the sense of accomplishment, and through our efforts, we helped the community. Our efforts were not in vain. I would continue doing some community service, because I thought I could be happy and content while helping others. The world would be full of love if all of us could help each other.

College Experience

I think my experience at Baruch College has not lived up to my expectations in some aspects. As the first semester at college, it is quite different from the high school. I am excited for being a college student; it is an unknown journey, and a fresh experience; and it may be a turning point of my life. But after the excitement is over, the troubles come out. The college is more laborious than high school, and I have more pressure with the course. Before attending college, I think college would be freer, but it takes me a lots time doing the reading and writing my paper. I don’t think I do best at my first semester at college.

In some way, my experience at Baruch College has lived up to my expectations. I think the college life will give me more possibilities of my future. After my first semester at Baruch College, I have some new friends, and my ability is improved; it makes me feel a sense of accomplishment. For example, my vocabulary is widened by reading every day. And my reading ability is also improved. But I think it is not enough, there is no end to progress. I still need to work harder at college.

If I could do the first semester all again, I think I would be more industrious. And I would be more optimistic. There is a will, there is a way. I don’t think I try my best for the work. I think if I could do my best, I would be better for my work and make more progress. At this semester, sometimes I would feel idle, during those period, I don’t want to do the reading and homework, I just want to sleep or watch movie at home. I think I should avoid this kind of feeling, so that I could be more industrious.

I think I have changed a little bit since I started at Baruch College. I think I become more independent right now. At the high school, the teachers would decide many things for me, but at college, there are more things that should be decided by me. With the coming age, I need to be more and more independent in my whole life. I can explore the world, and then finally find out what I really want is. Anyway, I would try my best.

College Experience

The first semester of college is coming to an end. From my experience, my first semester at Baruch College is very different from what I’ve expected. My initial goals and standards of myself at college did not follow through the first semester. I’ve set a list of things I should do and reach for in college, such as gaining a 3.5 GPA for an example. Before I’ve got into college, I heard stories from other college students that college is “fun”. What I thought of fun, it wasn’t the fun that they meant. College can be fun when you can manage to get the work done and have time for fun. But when I had a difficult time managing my time, it was no fun for me.

So far, I would have to say my first semester at Baruch College is not the worst or the best time of my life. For the classes, I realize that I had to put a lot more effect into studying than in High School. The pace of the lessons goes by in a blink of an eye. I realize that I had to put a lot more attention to the classes. Although my first semester of college may not be the best time of my life, but I’ve learned how to make it better in the next four years in college.

If I could do my first semester all over again, I think I would definitely change the way I study. In these few months, I realize that in college, memorizing the work isn’t the way to success, understanding the concept of the material is the most important part to learning. I use to memorize everything for the test, it works sometimes, but most of the time, I had to understand the concept in order to explain something clearly on my test.

College has changed me into someone who can keep up with tasks, and get work done effectively and efficiently. I think it is also the most important lesson that I’ve learned through college that would help me in the future in the real world.

Community Service- Walking for Lupus

On Oct. 22, I got the
chance to know Lupus by joining a walking hold by The Alliance for Lupus
Research (ALR), which is a national voluntary health organization based in New
York City that was founded in 1999, for the first time. The reason I did this
community service was that it was a requirement of my freshman seminar class.

When I first heard that
I would be engaging in a community service project, I felt that was too much
trouble, since I had to waste my time and energy for others in order to
complete this meaningless project.

The goals of this
walking for Lupus were to cause more people’s attentions to the disease Lupus
and encourage them to contribute either money or time to support the studies
and patients. When I got there, I was shocked, since there were hundreds of
people, including elders and children, standing there and preparing themselves
for the walking. The point was most people showed up that day didn’t suffer
from Lupus, instead, they were there just because they wanted to try their best
to help. This made me realize how selfish I was when I tended to refuse to give
my time and energy to do this community service.

During the whole
process of walking, I was talking with some people who had been involved in
this walking for several years. All of them thought that it was a pleasure to
contribute what they had to help others, and they were all glad to keep
participating this walking every year. Their generousness encouraged me to care
more about others and help them as well.

After I finished this
community service project, I changed my thinking, attitudes and actions towards
others, myself, the community and community service work as a whole. I started
to think that all of us came together and formed our community, and everyone in
our community was important. Therefore for the development and improvement of
our community, we definitely needed community service to help those groups of
people who were in trouble, and we should participate more community services
instead of being selfish and caring only ourselves as well.dmdmffHow has your community service
experience impacted your personallyndsaa

In a word, this service-learning
experience was useful and helpful. I was satisfied with my experience overall,
since I had learnt a lot of things and found a way to improve myself personally.
Therefore I think I will be staying involved in the community during my college
and adult years.

The 3rd blog

The first semester is going to end in a month, I have gained much more than what I initially expected through the past thirteen weeks, not only academic knowledge but also new values to society.

Gain vs. Lost: first I received my class schedule, I was complaining that they assigned the exact same classmates to each of my courses. This was obviously going to limit our social network, and that would be boring to me. Last week everybody in my class made their new schedule for next semester, few of us have chances to meet again. Actually, we lost larger social networks, but gained deeper friendships.

Naïve vs. Mature: I was told that I was naïve, I was always acting like a kid when I already turned to eighteen. I do not know what makes me such a personality, honestly I hate being a kid. At the beginning of the semester, I wrote down “making people around me happy is one of my goals”. My statement was not false, but I used a wrong method to get it done. I made jokes to bring fun to others, like a clown in time square, surrounding by groups of kids. Now I discover that anytime we aim to accomplish something, there are usually multiple ways for options, to choose a naïve or mature way, it is up to ourselves. Most of time they both direct us to the destinations, but an unsuitable choice is making a bad experience.

Finally, never take a risk without evaluation to its consequence. Most of us are going to dedicate in business occupations, most of us are going to be entrepreneurs. Take a deliberation before getting started .

community services

This is my first time to act as volunteer and I choose to join a walking for lupus which is called The Alliance for Lupus Research(ALR) on October 22,2011.Basically, it is a national voluntary health organization in New York City that was founded in 1999. The walk aims to draw people’s attention to the Lupus and make a contribution to the Lupus research. In my opinion, this walk can awaken people  to  the fact that they could do something for the community and society.

Actually, I felt surprised when I initially heard that I have to do community service in order to pass the class, because I have never done a volunteer job before and got no idea about it. Consequently, I have to follow my group members’ decision, and that’s my initial reason for choosing this community service.

In the beginning, my entire mind was thinking that this project would be boring and I would not enjoy myself during this walking. Nevertheless, I changed my mind after I actually pay my attention to this walking, and I didn’t regret to give my time and energy to engage in this walking. the reason was that I found a lot of people join this walking with their whole family and they enjoyed themselves with great passions, even though they didn’t have any relationships with those patients, and then I was so inspired by their behavior and their speech that they could encourage Lupus patients to  fight against the disease and focus on the positive outcomes.

My most trying experience in this community service project was to walk through the whole journey as possible as I can. However, I could not finish entire miles because I felt extremely tired after the several miles. This experience taught me that when people tried their best to do something, it did not make any sense about the outcomes. In addition, this experience changed my ways of thinking, attitudes and actions. We should appeal other people to contribute to those people who need help in society, also we should have a positive attitudes on everything. Moreover, I learnt that we need to develop a good skill on team work, because we should work with a lot of people in order to deal with different kind of cases when we lived in the same society.

Overall, I satisfied with my experience because after I took part in this event, my previous views about the society were totally changed, people tried to utilize different sources to corporate with each other to help the lower-class, so that the people from lower-class could reduce suffering in their rest of lives.

Throughout this community service project, I realize that I am also on a way to improve myself while helping others. As a result, I am looking forward to participate in more community service during my college and adult years.

The happiness comes from helping others.

The Third Workshop-Job Search Strategies

On Dec.1st,
I attended a workshop called “Job Search Strategies” hold by the Starr Career
Development Center during club hour. This workshop talked about some useful
strategies for college students to search for jobs. As a freshman, I am
definitely a beginner of this, so it is really helpful for me to attend this
workshop, even though I may not get a chance to use those strategies I learnt
from that workshop until two or more years later.

At the beginning, the
instructor showed us some common mistakes we made and gave us some suggestions
for them. One of them was that we were kind of unrealistic and her suggestion
was that we should be realistic by knowing clearly what kinds of jobs we were
looking for and interested in.

The other one was that
we were limited by ourselves. We thought that if our majors were accounting, we
could only be accountants in the future. However the instructor showed us an
example, that a company hired a philosophy major student to be its manager, because
it wanted his skills of interpreting and analysis.  Therefore her suggestion was that we should
think more diversity by working something that was not just related to our
majors, and at the same time, working in other states instead of staying here
in New York City if possible.

At last, the instructor
also talked about the informational interviewing which was just asking someone
about what they did. She told us that the knowledge gained from an
informational interview could help us determine which courses and
qualifications were necessary for specific career paths, the types of job or
companies best suited for us. The most important thing she said was that
informational interviewing could aid our job search, therefore it was really necessary
for us to get to know more about informational interviewing.

Overall I think this
workshop “Job Search Strategies” is very useful for me to search for a job
after graduating from college. Therefore I am really happy that I got the
chance to attend this workshop, and I hope I can hear more workshops hold by Starr
Career Development Center in the future.

The third workshop

Last week, I joined a workshop which called “Job search strategies” on Dec.1st. The workshop shows that how to search your career in efficient way by using different strategies or resource and how to prepare the informational interviewing when you apply a job. Also the instructor utilized more easy way to explain those materials about the job search. However, I really learned a lot of information and ideas form this workshop.

First of all, we should figure out who we are. In other word, it means that we need know the position that we interested or we process. We could research ourselves, including the values, interests, personality, and skill. It looks like we have to understand what we need or want when we began to apply a job. It was really more helpful and efficient for us to research a job. On the other hand, keep a positive attitude is a most important thing when we stared to find a career. For example, we could keep dreams and open new possibility, instead of being an unrealistic and rigid.

In additional, how can we find out the job in the market while there are full of several of resource and information? We usually use some website in the internet to do research. There are also many websites for the jobs, such as occupation outlook of handwork, career info net, business week, and career journal. What is more, we could make research through the newspapers and industry journal.

Last one, the informational interviewing part has a great impact on searching job. It is asking someone about what they do and think about relationship building. Moreover, an informational interview can help you discover jobs that are not publicly advertised, expand your knowledge of job market in the field you want to explore. Another benefit is to make yourself a more qualified candidates and make support for your job research. However, it is an easy and efficient way to learn about a career.

Ultimately, I am pleasure that I have this opportunity to visit “Job search strategies” workshop, because I obtain lots of information about careers, which it is advantage for me to search a job in future.

In my personal opinion I feel that my first semester in Baruch college went pretty badly. I feel that i was unable to successfully accomplish the goals  that i set in the beginning of the year such as getting good grades in class and getting to know many people. However, much to my dismal as the semester came to an end, I found that I was unsuccessful in both my goals of grade improvement and friend acquirement. And if I had the chance to do it all again things would’ve definitely improved. I would’ve study a lot more or a lot less since i would’ve known exactly what would be on the exams and there would no longer be any need to study, nevertheless if somehow i had the chance to do it all again i would not, because i feel that through my past mistakes future opportunities are created and because i made all these mistakes now I have the opportunity to do much better later.
