Mari’s playlist

I like to think that I have a versatile taste in music. My iTunes collection consists of everything from Joan Jett to Skrillex but I relate to only a few of them. Half of the songs I’ve chosen for my playlist are about embracing your weirdness, being a disaster and not allowing other people to bring you down for it. The forth song is about planning the future as a strong and independent person and a leader. The fifth song I chose is about my sister, whom I love more that myself and would do absolutely anything for. The song Don’t Stop always inspires me to keep going when I just want to collapse on the floor and lay there until everyone leaves me alone. The next song is on the playlist because Ed Sheeran is my favorite artist. Live tomorrow is about living your life right now and not giving everything up while dreaming about the future, which I need to be reminded of very often as I tend to dream about the future a lot. Finally, People Help the People is about people changing their selfish ways to help others out.

Mari, all I can say is wow! You really selected music that has a deeper, personal meaning. Thank you for being reflective. I want to ask you to reflect on what you mean when you say “weird” or “disaster.” Some of the greatest thinkers and leaders were “weird” and “disasters” in the eyes of others, depending on how you define the word.

Weird – Many times in my life I’ve been labeled as the weirdo in the back of the class, or the socially awkward one. I tried adjusting my behavior to fit into the social norms but senior year I met a group of kids in my school who were just as unconventional as me and didn’t make me feel excluded. They helped me realize that the odd people are usually more interesting than the normal ones. Now I keep myself introverted until I get comfortable enough around people to reveal myself, but I never pretend to be someone I’m not anymore. I am also a disaster sometimes, in school, with friends, or even with my parents. I’m young and make mistakes every day, I keep failing at things but still try to do better. I’ve learned that it’s okay to be a failure at first as long as you’re striving for success and don’t give up.

Mari, I am glad you were able to find a group of people with whom you feel comfortable being yourself. It is also normal for people to be guarded until they feel comfortable around others; this is how we learn to adapt.

Everyone makes mistakes and I mean EVERYONE. This is part of the learning process that follows us throughout life. You are never really a “failure” so long as you don’t give up and continue to have hope and push forward. If you would like to talk more, please feel free to email me.
