For the most part, I like to think our little group of friends get along really well but the most problematic moment of the day comes along between 12 to 12:25, right when we finish our second class. We’re all really excited for this little break but the moment the person walking ahead, whoever it may be, turns around and asks us that one question, we all pause and look at each other, waiting for someone to speak up. Thirty seconds go by and we’re still standing there staring at each other as if an answer would just drop down from the sky…but it doesn’t work like that. It’s not like high school, where you just get on a line and pick one of three choices. This is college and most decisions are your own. There are plenty of options but when someone decides to step up and voice their opinion, they get a loud ‘no’ in return before the second syllable could even leave their mouth. This goes on for about three more times before we all sigh and shout out different things. Everyday, we all manage to solve math problems, pick hard topics for our philosophy debates and write five page essays for English but the one problem that looms over us everyday is choosing a place to eat and I’ll never ever understand why it takes at least five minutes for us to realize that we all don’t have to eat the same thing.
I just really like food.
Nichanan, I’m glad to see you have established a peer group and are enjoying the time you spend with your friends. I am sorry that you (and perhaps others) are afraid to speak up in a class where your opinions will be shot down. Yes, college is all about formulating your own opinions, becoming the autonomous thinker. I also relate to you about the eating thing- VERY true. Nice job.
