Seriously… the piano? ( Ivy)

Most parents would force their children to participate in extracurriculars like swimming or soccer during the weekends that would refrain them from watching too much TV or playing addicting video games. Well my parents felt the same way but for different reasons. My mom just looked at my long, thin fingers and immediately decided that playing the piano was the way to go. Like most first graders, I couldn’t care less and went along with it as long as it didn’t make me miss an episode of the Powerpuff Girls on Cartoon Network. During my first piano lesson, I met this middle aged bald man who seemed to have a hearing problem. Anyways, this guy was so stubborn; he hated kids who could not not play a simple song like Mary Had a Little Lamb. I messed up with the G flats and could not tolerate with this man’s teaching style. Eventually, I cajoled my mom that I hated playing the piano and quit in less than a year, never having to see that horrible teacher again. I wanted to do something that I enjoy and obviously the piano and I did not agree.

So how did I become so infatuated with art? While many people say that the TV rots your brain, I actually absorb the images from the screen rather than letting them pass by my mind. SO back to the show, The Powerpuff Girls, I was sitting in the dining room , watching the show as always and then grabbed a pencil and paper. I practiced drawing the three characters repetitively until I saw my mom looking over my shoulder. SHe looked at my drawing and then back at the TV, noticing that they looked exactly the same! She was surprised at my ability to look at an image and then duplicate it onto the paper. SHe thought I had an innate talent of drawing from memory. In fact, I’ve never taken art lessons before until my mom helped me get into Mark Twain by moving away to cartoons and introducing me to realistic drawing and then into high school.

I guess with seven years of art, I could apply my artistic ability into the business world. With the fast paced world exposed to advertisements like McDonalds and Nike, I want to do something with advertising where I can design logos and products for companies. What I’m trying to say is that sometimes you discover a talent that you never knew you had. In a way, exposing to new things might be beneficial, however, don’t force yourself to like something. You will be miserable like me with the piano.

My monolauge

Just a small town girl from Long Island, I was in for a real treat with all the diversity here at Baruch College. While I still see a bunch of familiar faces every day, I look forward to new faces that pass me in the halls or say hello in the caf. Just like every kid, I have moments where I feel guilty and moments where i feel empowered. An example of a time where I felt empowered was when I came in first place in a state wide french poetry contest in high school. I felt proud of my accomplishment even though I was not sure how I managed to win the contest because I knew very little french. I also face many challenges like the struggle to balance my social life with my academic life. I find it challenging to focus on school if I am dealing with a problem at home or with a friend. Some things I am scared of apart from failing a test in school are: driving on highways, being alone in the dark, clowns, and birds( I’m not sure why but I just always have been). Family plays a big role in my life. I am one of five girls and one of six kids. We all have very different personalities and attitudes. I’d say if we had a television show, it would be more entertaining than the Kardashians because of all the conflicting opinions. Even though I am just 18 years old, I see myself married in five years, and living in the city with a job working for a magazine. The theme song that would most define my life is Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. I believe each day is a chance to write your own story, and be who you want to be. My best advice would be to trust nobody more than yourself. Never cheat on a test because not only is it unethical, but your thoughts are probably just as good if not better than the kid next to you. Do trust people. Don’t believe in yourself less in order to trust others. If I have learned anything in my life it is that at the end of the day, you must have faith in yourself to succeed in life.

My Monologue (I know I’m early)

“Congratulations Class of 2012!”

June 25,2012. A day that I will remember. It was my graduation day. It was a day where one chapter of my life was closed and another was opened.

Mom: “These four years will fly by.”

She was completely right. I just was not prepared for how fast they did fly by. It all started in 2007/2008. It was freshman year. I was one student, in a school of 4000 students, trying to adjust. Now, when I look at it, this year was kind of a blur. I was busy making new friends, learning my way around the school, and just trying to keep up with my schoolwork at home.

Sophomore year also flew by. I had my friends, which I went out with any time that I could. This was also the year where people had their Sweet 16 parties. The schoolwork was easy and I did well.

Junior year was the only year that took forever to get through. Since I was told that this was the most important year of my high school career (since colleges would look at these  grades the most), I took on a lot of AP classes. Did they keep me busy? OH YEA, especially AP Spanish Language. I spent many long nights that year staying home and staying up late to study.

Now this brings us back full circle to graduation. A day of triumph. A day where all my work had paid off.

That morning:

Me: “I can’t believe that it is finally over.”

Mom: “Yea, I told you that it would fly by.”

Walking across the stage, shaking my principal’s hand, and walking away with my diploma was one of the most empowering moments in my life. It showed me how hard work really pays off. It was also a reminder. A reminder that I have another four long years ahead of me. Yes, these four years will be the most academically challenging years of my life, but if I work at it, they will yield the greatest rewards.

This is a picture that I would use to describe myself.

This is Wonder Woman’s logo.

Part 2

Hi everyone. The text with my last blog never uploaded so here it is. My blog is the one with all the paintings. So I think I said thus before, but I love art. You can constantly find me doodling, drawing, painting and anything else of the likes. Art is the way I express myself. The paintings I put up are some of my favorites, the ones I feel display who I am as an artist and as a person. Each of them have a special meaning to me. Some of them date all the way back to when I first started painting when I was just a young girl. (can you guess which one? It’s the one with the children jumping in the ocean. That was my first real painting.) Some of the paintings took me just a day, while some of them are ones I’ve worked on for months at a time, building them up a little day by day. Honestly, the subjects of most of my paintings don’t really have a particular meaning to me, they are mostly just pictures I found online and thought would make a cool painting. I am constantly on the lookout for new things to paint or draw. I know most people put up pictures of a lot of different things to define them, but I put up all of the same thing because that is how I see myself. I am an artist.

James’ Playlist

http://grooveshark.com/playlist/Fro+Playlist/77429907

Okay, so I this post is a tad late, but better now than never huh….
Anyway, the playlist that I’ve compiled are 10 songs off the top of my head that I listen to. I only have three playlists on my phone and what I really wanna listen to depends on the situation that I’m in. A good number of the songs in here are house music like “Blitz” and “One” (although I couldn’t find the original mix). I usually listen to house music whenever I’m on the go because there usually aren’t any words and it’s more like background music because I find music with lyrics to be pretty distracting. I really think house music embodies the notion of having fun in life and living while you still can. It’s something that I want to do now because I know that later on in life responsibilities start to pile up and I’ll probably end up regretting everything that I wasn’t able to do as a young adult. Another bunch of these songs are more emotional like “You Found Me”. Sometimes I just really like to listen back to these kind of mainstream songs from a long time ago, because they were popular for a reason and it’s like a whole new experience listening to these songs that I really liked but stopped listening to as the years went by. I usually listen to this kind of music if I’m just feeling really good about something or if I’m feeling out of it (doesn’t really help though haha). I like to revisit the past and pull up old songs that I used to like because sometimes I don’t even know what the song was talking about or it touches on some deep subjects that I didn’t even think about when I used to listen to it. Lastly, over high school I have definitely grown to love and embrace rap music. As a first-generation Asian American, my parents both come from China and have very traditional and reserved personalities and have very stubborn outlooks on life. They believe that rap is just people trying to talk as fast as they can into the mic which honestly can be what rap sounds like to some people but it speaks so much more. The thing that I love about rap music is that there are so many inferences. It’s kinda like when your’e writing, the teacher tells you to show, not tell. I find that in a sense it’s the same for rap music. There are so many references that you have to understand or the song just won’t make sense to you. One word in the song could change the whole idea of the song. It can be interpreted in so many ways, just like people look at the world. I think that the only reason why rap is generally looked down upon is because of its vulgar language. Rap tends to have more profanity but I think it really helps an artist get their message across.

Erica’s Music Playlist :D

http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/Erica+L+s+Playlist/77349090

Evening Everyone 🙂

Man, all of you have pretty interesting tastes. I just found some new songs to listen to 🙂 Thanks Guys!

So, though these songs don’t exactly explain the story of my life, they’re all pretty similar as you can see. The reason for this is that I love love love love dancing and I love love love love to listen to dance music. Anything dance/electronica, it’s on my IPod or on my computer. The first song “Moves Like Jagger” by Marron 5 is definately well over-played but I use it to describe my dancing skills because I feel “I Got Them Moves Like Jagger”. Corny, yes. True? Well, maybe ;). The next song “Ti Daleko” is all in Russian and one of the most famous songs. The reason I picked this song is because I wanted to share my culture with all of you. I am Russian and pretty proud of it. The next few songs are yet again, dance/electronica/trance. I actually got into electronica/trance not too long ago and surprisingly the person that inspired this move was my dad. He loves trance and has gone to Electric Zoo twice. Yup. He is a 25 year old living in a 45 year old’s body. This is not a joke. He loves to party and have a good time. Monkey see, monkey do and I have adopted this into my personality as well. The seventh song “Give Me Everything Tonight” as well as the eigth song “I’m Alive” describes my determination to live life to the fullest and enjoy it. I know it sounds kind of yolo-ish but I really feel that everyone should cherish every moment and make extraordinary memories. Do something different. Do something daring. I don’t like saying What If’s. I feel that if you want something, go for it and what’s the worst that could happen? You either get it or go back to being in the same position you already were in. Might as well try. I’m not trying to sound like one of those sappy quotes you see on Facebook, it’s just something I really believe in and try to carry out.  “This Time For Africa ” by Shakira is just a fun song to listen to. WACKA WACKA FLOCKA WACKA. This song makes me relaxed in the most stressful of times. The last song “Raise Your Glass” by Pink is just an awesome song. Period. It’s all about being loud and being yourself and being proud of who you are. It’s inspirational and the video is quite amusing.

It’s difficult to express yourself with other people’s material, so I just put together some songs that I particularly like and hope that they paint a picture themselves a little bit.

I see myself as a relaxed person in general and the music I listen to seems to reflect that. Lately I’ve really been into chillwave acts like Millionyoung and Brothertiger  and bands like Animal Collective and Of Montreal, which I don’t know the genre of exactly (Wikipedia is telling me that it is “Neo-psychedelia”). What music I want to listen to depends on my mood at any given time, but usually I find myself attracted to downtempo and synthy music.

When I’m feeling higher energy I listen to rap. I started listening to a lot of 90s East Coast rap kind of ironically when I was in middle school, but now truly connect with. The Wu Tang Clan, the Beastie Boys, and a few other 80s/90s rap acts have a fun but destructive tone to them that I relate to and really get into. Old Dirty Bastard (Rest in peace) in particular inspires me as somebody who just didn’t care what people thought, if his music was good, or if he was saying actual words. To just channel a particularly light aspect of yourself like that is really valuable and I love his music for it and I’m listening to him right now, so this blog is dedicated to him. Why not. We love and miss you Old Dirty Bastard.

Anyway, thanks for reading my blog. The opinion might be biased, but I think my music is pretty sweet so listen to it. everything everyone has posted so far has been cool. See you around.

Michael’s Music Playlist

http://www.mixpod.com/playlist/89501521

Hi Everyone!,

I created this playlist for you guys to enjoy. I’m going to explain it all because the music is diverse in style lol. Okay, so first one is called The Aviators by Helen Jane Long. This song I listen to when I want to relax in bed and pretend like I am flying. You guys have no idea how many times this song has put me to sleep at night. Also, its so beautiful that it sometimes make me want to cry. The next song is I Got A Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas. This represents me in that it’s a party song, and I love to party, feel good, and dance till the sun comes up. The next one is My Immortal by Evanescence. I love this song because it is a beautiful song, and Amy Lee has great vocal range. Also, I know how to play this on the piano, and it’s one of my most favorite songs to play. This next song is Albanian. Its called Suus by Rona Nishliu, and I love it because I love singing. This woman has insane range, and the lyrics are also very powerful if you look up the translations. Can’t Be Friends by Trey Songz is one of the best R&B songs that I have ever heard. I love it because I always used to hear it while I would  wait for one of my best  friends to pick up her cell phone. I couldn’t find the slower normal version of Beez in the Trap by Nicki Minaj, but it’s definitely one of my favorite songs. Firstly, because my friend introuduced it to me, and it was just so catchy. And lastly, because you don’t understand one thing nicki minaj is trying to say, and so it’s like a song about nothing (yet its catchy). Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven has a deeper meaning for me. This was the first song that I played at Carnegie Hall. Also, me playing it through the phone was the last song my aunt heard before she went to the hospital and died of Cancer. Travie McCoy’s Billionaire is a song that represents me because I have very high hopes for myself, and I really really really want to strive to be rich. (Thats why I’m going for accounting). La La La by Auburn Feat. IYAZ is one of the songs that I will always remember because it was the first song that was playing when I drove my  blue manual mitsubishi eclipse spyder out of the dealer’s lot. This last song is dedicated to my grandmother because she is one of my bestest friends in the whole wide world. Every weekend when she would come to pick me up, this song would always be one that we would listen to on her tapes in the car. Therefore, these songs really do describe and mean a lot to me.

Freshman Seminar Playlist

Hey Guys, So above is the link to my Spotify playlist. I wont go through each individual song but I ll talk about what type of music I like in general. To be honest I like many genres of music. From hip-hop to indie to even some country songs. Lately I’ve been listening to some indie stuff, but hip-hop and rap is always something I will like. I love all the music on my playlist but some songs I like a lot are “The Scientist” and “Thinkin Bout You”

Now something about me. I was born in New Jersey, but have lived in Manhattan my whole life.  My parents are Malaysian, and besides my immediate my family, my whole family is in Malaysia. I visit them every 2-3 years. I was just there for six weeks this summer and just got back 2 days before school started.  I love visiting  Malaysia. Its basically 80 degrees everyday, with nice beaches. And the people in Malaysia are just so laid back. Also their food is delicious. I plan to retire there when I m older.

Something unique about me is that I have been a Boy Scout since 2007. I enjoy scouting a lot because of the activities such as camping, white water rafting, skiing, etc. Scouting is also a great place to meet new people. It also has given me a lot of skills. I can start fires and tie knots and stuff like that. I am a Eagle Scout, that’s the highest rank achievable in scouting, and it is something I am very proud of.

Uhmm, before I start talking about myself I’d like to say these pictures are not mine…I grabbed them from photobucket since I realized it would take too long to make them myself, so here are the links to the owners and the photos

The reason I had first chosen the picture of Mozilla to describe myself is that I do find myself on the internet a lot. Also I like to use Mozilla more than any other browser, it’s the best in my opinion. Nearly everyday I’m on the internet looking for something silly, funny or interesting and this I guess makes up a part of me. I can’t imagine living without the internet to clear off my boredom. The second picture is a picture of footprints in the snow, I find myself attached to this image since my hobby is walking. Out of everything in my life I had chosen my hobby as walking, why? Well I started walking to burn calories when I found out during high school I was gaining pounds and after walking so long I find it comforting to just take a stroll outside. Walking is like the most easiest exercise that’s why I took such a liking to it, considering I’m not really athletic. On the third picture it shows a pillow =). Sleeping is a part of everyone and a big part of me too, if possible I would like to sleep for half a day, but I’d miss out on everything I have to do daily. From my experience there are too few hours in a day, ever since middle school I’ve got some slight dark lines under my eyes from lack of sleep. My fourth picture I’ve chosen is a house, well this is my dream. I just want to live out an honest life, get a job and have a family, it’s a pretty plain dream I admit, but I would be fortunate if I did fulfill it. I certainly don’t want to be homeless and end my life horribly, I’ve seen too much tragic and sad stories that it’s influenced me. Speaking of stories the fifth picture is of a bunch of books. Since my childhood I’ve been listening to stories, my elementary teachers doing read-aloud, stories from my friends, stories from books and stories from the internet. So I came to love stories, I like listening to stories and it’s become a part of me. As for my sixth picture it’s just a picture of the word “family.” There’s no surprise that it expresses who I am, I value my family since they have been taking care of me since birth. They made me to be who I am today. The seventh picture is of a mountain…yeah I’m running out of ideas. Anyways I’m into nature scenery’s, especially mountains since I think the landscape looks great once you take the time to climb all the way up there. For my last picture its a glasses. I think this is self-explanatory for why it represents me, I’m near-sighted and I’m regretting the fact I stared too close to the T.V. as a kid. Well these eight pictures describe who I am, if you actually read this thanks for reading.
