Enrichment Workshop – Manraj Chawla

My favorite enrichment workshop was Baruch Voices. When we first heard it before it was nice to hear but this was a lot better because we could hear what our freshman peers had to say. I liked writing the monologue, but was really surprised at how creative and simple some of the other ones were. The message was great and there were many messages to learn. I loved hearing all the stories especially the ones about all the workload and waking up early in the morning. Overall I learned that people very different and their lives are very interesting, especially their thoughts.

First Three Months at Baruch – Manraj Chawla

I picked this picture for a reason. Although Baruch is going quite well I am struggling in math the most. However, this was in my expectations. I expected the classes to be generally fair the first year or the first semester at least. And I am not struggling in most classes. Professors make the class a little different, for example its a little hard to apply everything I learn in Math. Therefore I chose this picture. I am glad that classes are easy so far, because I know in the upcoming years when classes get specific to my major classes will be hard. Its a good intro into college and I can’t wait to experience more!

Registering For Class – Manraj Chawla

I’m glad that I got to meet with my Academic Advisor because I really had questions that needed to be answered about future classes to take and especially which ones I needed for my major. I feel more confident in choosing my classes. Professors may be an issue picking the right one and getting into the classes before they fill up but I think I will be able to do it now after meeting with the advisor.

E-mail to a Professor – Manraj Chawla

Professor Hinds,

Hi Professor, unfortunately I just saw that my grade in class was a B- I was wondering why. I have done all my readings, homework, and participated in class. I also have handed in the essays that you have assigned in class on time. I haven’t gotten lower than an A- on an essay. I was just concerned about this. I was wondering if I could talk to you in person, maybe sometime during your office hours. Please let me know when you are available to discuss this.

Thanks,

-Manraj Chawla

Time Management – Manraj Chawla

Usually, I tend to leave things to the last minute. However, since I’ve been at Baruch I’ve been trying to keep everything organized and of course doing my work on time. Every now and then like this blog post I do things last minute. Sometimes its good to do these assignments last minute because I don’t take breaks and generally tend to be focused, but on the other hand I do rush at times. I feel as if I waste a lot of time online which isn’t always good. I like taking breaks between doing my work. Cramming a bunch of information before isn’t good. I usually study for half an hour or hour and then take a twenty minute break. I hope I continue keeping up with all this work, and handing everything in on time.

The First Look at the Real World – Monologue – Manraj Chawla

That entire plane ride I couldn’t wait to see my cousins again. It had been a year and as much as I love crappy airplane food and the seven hours of movies, I just wanted to get off and step foot into England. It was last year December 24th to be exact. My family and I were taking a little trip to England for two weeks. I still remember that first time I got onto a plane to America, it was different, something I didn’t expect, but to be back in England it feels like home, where we all blend in. No one stares because everyone knows. Finally, the plane landed and all I could think of was seeing more Sikhs. I un-clicked my seatbelt, got up, took the small bags, and was heading out, I said thanks and bye to the fight attendant and then I saw a guy, a Sikh. I was walking towards him in the big tube thing that connected the plane to the airport. He had a turban just like I do and he worked at the airport. I said hi to him in my language. He just stared at me, didn’t say anything back, and looked at me as if I were the biggest idiot in the world.

I then realized what I had done. England is quite a small country, most states are bigger, and there are the same amount of Sikhs that live in England as do in America. I then thought to myself how isolated Sikhs are in America. So, I put my head back down and kept walking thinking about how in England you may see ten to fifteen Sikhs a day, in America you may see ten to fifteen Sikhs over a month or even longer. Something needed to be done, more Sikhs in America? More Sikhs in the world? How bout keeping our identity?

It took me a while to realize all this, but the Sikhs in England weren’t exactly true all the time. Many of them had conformed and changed the way they look. This happens all around the world, but not as much as it does in America. So, for the first time I couldn’t wait to get back to America. I couldn’t wait to back and see how people look at me, I couldn’t wait to walk proudly knowing that I was different. England is filled with Sikhs and its a norm seeing one everyday, the battle has already been won there. Its the other places of the world that haven’t seen Sikhs. I wouldn’t understand how the world really is if I didn’t move to America. It is a struggle for anyone who is different and I wanted the challenge. I couldn’t wait to go back to hear the first person say why do you look like that? I want to see more Sikhs in America, and the only way people will see is if we continue to keep our identity, something that I will never get rid of.

Response to Cheating Article – Manraj Chawla

Cheating is a problem everywhere, and even though people get caught and others see the consequences everyone continues to do it. I’m glad that there was an article in The Ticker it really shows how cheating is a problem and also gives a good warning to students not to cheat. These days students cheat online which is a problem because students can readily cheat on homework assignments. Though, technology is advancing there are still ways to do it. Although it is good how technology is advancing because once something goes on the internet it stays there forever and these barriers can be taken down to find the students who are cheating. It doesn’t make sense why these students can’t put in the extra effort at any school of all levels. I hope that one day they understand and stop cheating and I hope that Baruch as a school doesn’t keep getting mentioned for cheating.

Blog Reflection – Manraj

So far blogging has been good, its interesting learning from people and also fun sharing about myself. I expected this because I follow not blogs but forums on technology (engadget, gizmodo) and its always different when learning about people instead of the latest technology. Sometimes I feel that blogging can be a little annoying depending on the assignments, however most of them have seemed to be on the positive side.

Its a different experience when learning about a person and I’m glad that we have this blog to learn about each other.

If you do like technology then here you go:

Who Am I? Manraj Chawla

So lets get all the technical, fun things that I like. First of all if there is anything that you should know about me, its that I am an Apple Fanatic. Not to the point where I will buy every product (thats ridiculous, its expensive), but the way in how much I admire the company and their products. Its amazing how they come so far, and get into an argument with me about an android being better? Well, it will be a couple hours before I am done talking to you.

Next I put a picture up of something a little different. This is video editing, and I love it a lot. I’ve been video editing privately and have also made a few professional videos. I’ve been doing this for over 5 years and don’t plan to stop anytime soon. TurbanInc is some of the work I’ve done, youtube it sometime!

The basketball comes next, I’ve hopped from many sports, soccer, baseball, football, cricket, but the once I seem to like the most is basketball. I try to play everyday, well I used to back in CT, but now its a little harder in the city.

This is a Tabla Its actually a really unique instrument from India. It is very hard to play and I’ve been playing for 8 years now. You must have a lot of strength especially in your fore-arms and shoulders. The longest I ever played was for 3 hours at a religious event. It was quite tiring.

Now I mentioned TurbanInc above, this is a little about it. TurbanInc is a indian/sikh shirt company owned by my cousin and it has played a big role in my life. The company has gone far with orders coming from all over the world. I have to say the best part about selling the shirts, is when someone who isn’t Indian comes and buys a shirt. Its awesome to see how much a shirt can inform people.

The next picture is a morphed flag. The British flag and the American flag. I thought this was perfect, this explained much about me. I was born in England and had lived there for about 9 years. When I moved here it was a big change. But living in both countries has really shaped me to be who I am today. In England, Sikhs were everywhere, over here in America there aren’t many Sikhs, and through this change I’ve become a lot stronger and a much more proud about who I am.

The next picture is a Khanda. A Khanda is a symbol of the Sikh faith. I am a Sikh thats why I wear a Turban. Thats a small glimpse there is much to explain, you can always ask me if you are interested. I am open to questions.

Finally, I have posted a bunch of people holding hands, but I look at it as a family. Family is the most important thing in my life. I care a lot for my family as they do for me. I wouldn’t be at Baruch without them and I just wanted to thank them by including this. I am who I am because of my family, nothing else matters.

My Perfect Class – Manraj Chawla

Everyone’s view on a class is different, but for me I would definitely want a class with a great interactive professor. My favorite class would be all about the stock market. I would love to have it in the trading floor and for the class to be very experimental. It would be awesome to simulate the stock market experience, and then eventually maybe invest as well. I would also like it if we could meet up with brokers and other investors who could show us how they got started or their stories about investing in the markets. But besides all the specifics, the professor has to be really nice, not even nice, they can be demanding as well, but if they give me a great learning experience in a good field then the class is perfect.
