On the train, I was so nervous that I was shaking. I started feeling sick and I would have given anything to go back home and crawl into my bed. After being in so many different schools, I was getting tired of that “first day of school” feeling. But this was different. This was my first day of high school.
To calm myself down, I started listening to my favorite song at the time, the Beatle’s “The Fool on The Hill”. I even had a John Lennon shirt on. As I made my way to the school with my dad, someone yelled, “I met him when he was here in New York!” I turned and saw as a man was smiling and pointing at my shirt. I kept walking and overheard the man conversing with his friend about what a nice guy Lennon was. This was enough to take my mind off of my nervousness throughout the rest of the way.
I started getting excited as I climbed up the front steps when I heard a gruff voice shouting, “You can’t go in with her, dad. You have to let them grow up.” I had the most petrified look on my face as I looked up to see my principal at the top of the steps. When I looked at my father, he was already waving goodbye. I wanted to scream, “No it’s okay dad. You can still come in with me. I don’t have to grow up now!” but I knew I had no other choice. I saw my principal smile at me as I walked past him to start on my journey.
