As a freshman, I am amazed at all that Baruch has to offer. I can honestly say that I enjoy college life more than I enjoyed high school life. In high school, I was often bombarded with loads of homework each night and left the biggest projects to complete shortly before deadlines. However, in college my classes are spaced out so that I have more time to study, complete assignments, and even schedule appointments with professors for extra help if I need it. I even have time for a small internship to boost my experience in the working world. As a result, I’ve really became a master at managing my time. I realized that no matter how many tasks I have to complete, I can finish everything if I plan out how to use my time wisely.

To begin with, the Baruch library has become my favorite place as I can go there during breaks to have silence to complete a long reading for class and use the computers to type up a small draft for a paper or even a review sheet of terms for an exam. I try do do as much work as I can during my breaks. I leave smaller assignments such as math problems, or short readings for when I go home after work. I even complete readings on the train on my way too and from school. I’ve learned to prioritize readings and looking through the next lecture PowerPoint on Blackboard because it truly helps me grasp concepts before class. In this way I will not waste time struggling to understand during class or spend extra time studying or receiving tutoring. Although, when I am unable to grasp certain lectures, I do not hesitate to use my time during breaks to meet with a teacher or form a study group. All of this preparation helps to make information stay in my head until the test so that the night before the test does not become an eight hour cramming session that has detrimental effects. I have not been to the writing semester this term, I would definitely like to use it next term when I have more challenging courses. I love the fact that I can get feedback on my work before I hand it in since it saves me time and I can get the best grade possible.

After writing out all of the tasks need to complete for each week, I then decipher if I have enough time to enjoy recreational activities such as watching a movie with friends and family, attending a party or going out to lunch with friends to treat my self, which I feel is very important to do once in a while. I find time to socialize after major exams and before holiday breaks by exploring the wonderful restaurants and other activities in the great Flatiron district that Baruch is part of.  I am truly grateful that I chose to join a learning community at Baruch because it helped me make friends easier and also provided time for fun activities together amidst our workload.

Sonam’s Monologue

Who am I? Well, to start off, I am the oldest of three in a big happy Guyanese family in Queens. As the first one to attend college, I focus on setting the best example possible for my fourteen year old sister and my eight year old brother. I am a student at Baruch who takes advantage of using the library during long breaks just to have that golden silence I can’t get anywhere else…well except when there’s a sudden giggle outbreak in the LC03 study group!  I am an intern at a small media firm. Right after classes at Baruch I walk over to work, which is luckily two blocks away, and become part of the fast paced business world. I am responsible for gathering data on target companies, uploading it to programs, and finding connections for marketing executives. Yes, it can get boring, and yes sometimes I wish I had time to join a club at Baruch or go out with my friends, but I’m trying to take advantage of this experience. I have plenty of excitement when there is a new task, or a meeting where I can apply my skills and start to get over my fear of public speaking.  My life has taken a dramatic turn. I feel like I’ve been stuck a box for the majority of my life living in Queens just going to school, coming home, and doing homework. After working for about a month, I only realized the other day that my building is right across from the amazing New York Life insurance building. The building with a giant pyramid of 24 carrot gold! Was I that narrow minded that I let routine get the best of me while neglecting to stop and take a step back sometimes? Travelling to Manhattan every day may not be pleasing on the subway, but it can sure open up your mind! I’ve learned to embrace my daily walks through Madison Square park and occasionally just glance up at the height of the beautiful buildings in this lovely financial capital of the world! What do I like best? What I like best are friends that keep in contact even when you go your separate ways. What I like best are teachers that sacrifice their free time just to help you grasp that one concept you don’t understand. What I like best are days when I have the time cook a delicious food network inspired dinner for my family and get complimented for it being better than my mom’s cooking. What do I believe in? Honestly, I believe that people should live as if tomorrow will never come. I believe that if everyone learns to capture today and make the best of their situation without fear or hatred, then success will be easy to obtain.

Picture 1:  This an Om symbol which is very sacred to Hinduism. It is the universal sign of God and peace. As a Hindu, I look at this symbol for a strong sense of faith and personal guidance. I feel that is important to establish a connection with God.

Picture 2: This is a scene from a Bollywood movie. I’ve grown up watching Bollywood films and I’m intrigued by the overly dramatic acting and songs with synchronized dancing.

Picture 3: I love the idea of getting into shape while feeling like you are at a party, so Zumba is perfect for me. I’ve been doing Zumba throughout my high school years and have found it very helpful for staying in shape. I love the upbeat Latin music and enjoy learning new routines. It keeps me motivated to exercise.

Picture 4: This is a scene of someone doing yoga outdoors. I do yoga weekly because it makes me feel rejuvenated. I can clear my thoughts from a hard and stressful week with slow stretches and breathing exercises. When the weather is nice, I like to do yoga in my backyard because I feel connected to nature.

Picture 5: This is a picture of Rachel Ray, who is one of my role models. I love cooking in my spare time for my family. I enjoy trying recipes from different cultures to expose myself to new foods and flavors. I also watch the food network everyday to get new ideas.

Picture 6: This is a picture of a bridge in Budapest. I love traveling and admire looking at the aesthetics of architecture in certain time periods. I hope to travel to the world’s beautiful cities. I’ve only been to a few other states and Canada, so I really want to travel.

Picture 7: This is a very occupied financial analyst who is keeping track of the stocks. I hope to become a financial analyst one day because I think that America needs to have better financial planning in companies to ensure success and create a stable economy. I will work very hard in college for this.

Picture 8: This is a sketch of several fashion designs. I love keeping track of the latest fashion trends and watching shows such as America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway. I enjoy coordinating my outfits and believe that the way one dresses really shows who they are. I don’t like to look unkempt, but rather motivated and professional. I would also like to learn how to sew and possibly create my own clothes.
