Freshman Seminar Blog #1- Yousuf Ahmed

I, Yousuf Ahmed, am from South Brunswick, NJ. Since I am one of the few students in my class from New Jersey, I am almost an outsider. This means that I do not really know the city, and I need to check out tourist attractions such as the Empire State and such. I am generally a quiet student in class. This allows me to be an attentive student, too. In fact, I read my books for class in order for my success in my academic career. I want to pursue a career in business more specifically in sales & trading because I want to know more about the markets and how they work. Also, when I am in class, I ask questions in order to make sure I understand what is going on in the class. When I go out for lunch with my classmates, I usually end up getting something quick to eat. I just want to get my lunch over and done with it because it can take a while, and I do not want to miss class. The city is a big place and a different place from South Brunswick, so a lot feels new and different. For example, the subway is not a transportation vehicle I can take when I am home. People usually drive everywhere. There are not any huge skyscraper buildings either. The city is tightly compacted whereas at home, everything is pretty much spaced out. In addition, this is the first time I’ve left home for academic endeavors and career prospects, too.  This is the major reason as to why everything is so different to me in the New York. Another interesting fact about me is that I do not really watch TV or sports. I have tried to get myself into sports and have at one point in time used to watch basketball, but then it kind of faded. I do not really have time for TV because I do other activities that make me busy such as homework.  I like to hang out with friends, too. It makes me feel good to see them because they are people I can just relax and chill with. I live at the dorms, which is a different experience as well because I share a room with my roommates, and at home, I had a room all to myself. I drive a 2000 or 2001 Nissan Maxima when I am home. My birthday is coming up on November 12. I will be turning 18. I am probably one of the younger students in my class. My favorite clothing store is Express. When I checked out Express on 5th Ave., I thought I was in heaven because there was just so much more selection of clothes and products. The city will be a great place to learn a lot about different cultures, to purse academic and career success, and to really push myself to great length. This is some information about me!

  1. I like that you are so tuned in to your work and school – I envy that. I also like that you want to do something in business/finance/economics/etc. because that’s where all the MONEY is!!! Other than that, don’t feel like an outsider. To be honest, all of the tourist attractions, while they are nice, they are all cracked to be so much more than they really are. Don’t dwell on having to go see them, you’ll be in the city at Baruch for several years now; you’ll see them eventually.

By the way, GET IN TO SPORTS!!!!!!!!!

  2. Hey Yousuf, this post really helped me get to know you better. I like the fact that you are devoted to studying and school, because after all that’s what we are all here for – to get educated, to experience life, to dream and achieve our goals. What I always say to myself is… “If I can make it in New York, I can make it anywhere” – New York is the city that gives you the chance to achieve great heights if you are ambitious enough…which you are! Soo keep the good work… it will pay in the end! I also do not agree with you that you are an outsider for living in New Jersey… hey i came from Bulgaria, which is 6,000 miles / 9,000 km away and if someone needs to feel like a tourist that would be me haha .. but i already checked all tourist destinations so you better catch up.. cause there are a lot of amazing places that are worth seeing :))

  3. All i can say is “wow” Yousuf, that is a lot of information on yourself. I love the fact that you’re so sight set on your goals. And i like hanging out with my friends too, because they help me relax and have fun. Even though i might not know how this experience in a new city feels like for you, i can understand a little. Especially after meeting your roommate. It’s amazing how you can get any studying or homework done in your dorm. But, best of luck!
