Reflection

Posted by KEVIN KO in Uncategorized

This was an interesting project and it was also a good experience. My group’s topic was on music because music was a common interest in our group. I thought that this was a really good way to get us to be more active in our school. The Bearcat article was written by me and another member in my group. Going to an event and just learning about something new was a nice experience, I was able to get a lot out of it. I was able to socialize with people out of my learning block. When other people presented, it was helpful to me in a sense that I learned about other activities that go on in Baruch College.

We chose to do our NYTime Front Page on music because it was a choice that most interested us. Music is a part of the performing arts. Baruch has many ways of getting involved on the campus, one of which is performing arts. In addition, some of our classmates have music class this year. They reflect the most salient issues because music and the music industry has been widely covered by the news in present day society.

Reflection on the NY Times Project

My group’s topic was Finance.  After all, Baruch is a business school and therefore a topic on business should be appealing to majority of the students. All of my group members wants a career similar to this specific field. This way, we can get a little news associated with our intended majors while working on this project. A perfect example of killing two birds with one stone! We were so enthusiastic with our topic which gave one of my group members the impulse to go to an Baruch event for finance.  In order to do well on this project, all of us have worked as a unit. We consulted each other for opinions and advices on whether an article is related to our topic or not.

Reflection on New York Times Project

Media is an important resource in our lives and a popular pastime that many people enjoy, therefore, my group decided on the theme of movies. Movies are versatile because they can be enjoyed in groups or individually. Luckily, Baruch is located in Manhattan which has many movie theaters within traveling distance. We wanted to incorporate the experience of a movie theater so we started at the beginning with choosing the movie. Before you purchase the tickets, a movie must be chose. Critic write movie reviews to help movie goers decide if a movie is interesting. The movie review on the remake of Romeo and Juliet showed the dramatic differences from the original play. It is up to the consumer to weigh pros and cons and decide if they are interested in the movie. An alternative to a fictional movie is a documentary. The article gives the reader a preview of the upcoming documentary based on Jeremy Lin’s successful basketball career. There are many varieties of movies and some of them come with the choice of upgrading it to 3-D. Whether or not to purchase the slightly more expensive tickets is an ambivalent issue so we turn to a study done by New York Times to see other consumers decide. After you purchase your ticket, movie theater snacks are next. Popcorn is mostly associated with movies so we decided to look in to see how it all started. It turns out that initially popcorn wasn’t sold in movie theaters. After enjoying a movie, movie goers often search for the producer and cast so that they can enjoy another movie they collaborated in. Maybe Daniel Radcliffe will come up in your search since he is both an actor and a producer. The article we chose focused on Radcliffe’s career in the film industry. We chose this article because many of us are curious about Radcliffe’s career decisions after the completion of the Harry Potter movie series.

Our Bearcat article does not relate to our theme of movies but it is important to our group because we are Baruch students. In our upcoming years here at Baruch, we will learn about many corporations because they may be our prospective employers. Other than the company’s history and values, relationships among coworkers are important as well. Many of the projects we will be assigned in the future as interns and employees will require working in groups. Building strong relationships with one another will allow us to communicate effectively with each other especially when we need help.

The popcorn and the movie ticket articles are relevant to Baruch because they relate to finance, one of the many popular majors here at Baruch. Movie theaters began selling popcorn because it was inexpensive to make which led to high profits. 3-D movie tickets contribute to revenue significantly because consumers will purchase 3-D tickets regardless of the extra dollars. The remake of the popular play Romeo and Juliet express the changes in our society. We will experience many changes in our life, especially in college. Similar to the remake, some will react positively while others will react negatively towards change. We cannot deter change, so it is best for us to adjust to it with an open mind. Many of us are familiar with Daniel Radcliffe and Jeremy Lin; they experience change too. The documentary of Jeremy Lin illustrates how he transitioned from a student attending a prestigious college, to a popular athlete playing for the New York Knicks. Before Daniel Radcliffe became Harry Potter, he was just a child. Radcliffe went from a regular child to an actor, and now he’s a producer. As many of us can imagine, he has experienced a lot of change in the past decade, but he took advantage of it and pursues with his interests in mind. The BlackRock information session showed that although they are an investment firm, relationships between coworkers are important as well. As students, we need to have healthy relationships with our classmates as practice for the corporate world.

Reflection on the NY Times Project about Traveling/Explorations

Posted by PAMELA in Uncategorized

Our theme is Traveling and Explorations, though not a noticeable theme by just looking at our blog site, it is one of the many important topics to mention anywhere. We included examples of explorations such as best water in Japan, hunting in California, great burgers in New York, Florida, and California, nice landscape in Australia, a haunted house in West Virginia, a perfect chilling place in Philadelphia. We included all these examples of explorations  in all other states in the United States and even across the country for travelers. Exploring is something that shouldn’t end, everyone should be looking to explore the world and experience new things. Even our Bearcat article is about an event called “the Block Party” that was created to provide freshman the opportunity to explore clubs, sororities, fraternities, and organizations within the Baruch College. Exploring food, beverages, activities, places, and opportunities is the most striking issue that should concern everyone.

Reflection

My group’s theme was business but finance in deeper terms. Since we are Baruch students, I feel that this theme fits very well since most students are here for business. All the posts we did on the blog had connection to each other whether it was on wall street of financial troubles. The bearcat post was used to explain that we as Baruch students has a very great opportunity to use the trading center just like a mini wall street. We should be all be up to date of financial articles because it is very important either for your job or everyday life. All the articles we used talked about the economy we are in right now and opportunities we can handle our finances correctly. It was a great way to connect our future careers to this nytimes project.

Reflection on NY Times

Posted by rh156139 in Uncategorized

Since our theme was “Travel and Exploration”, I have decided to go with a little bit of restaurant and bar/diner review. I was thinking that “exploration” branch into finding places with great eats so I went with a burger joint and a Japanese Shochu bar. Regretfully, I should have chosen places outside of the U.S. to fit more into the travel theme. After reviewing this project, I figure I am missing out on a lot of great food and the culture that follow behind each of them. I going to need to explore more up and down the block since there might be a fabulous diner hidden and worth trying out. When I was done with this project, I find myself watching Indian food reviews on YouTube. Although in some part of their culture, they focus on using hands to eat their food, their curry look delicious and I may someday go there to try some freshly made curry but first, I need to get some money to buy the plane ticket. :+D

Reflection on NY Times Front Page project

Posted by Kary Huang in Uncategorized

My group chose the theme “Travel and Exploration” for our New York Times front page project. In our front page, we included 6 articles about traveling to different cities, attractions, sights and exploring some great food in NYC along with the separate Bearcat post. We thought it would be a fun experience to read these articles and present them to our classmates. I personally chose abalone hunting and ghost hunting articles, because they’re both challenging and intensive like my first semester at Baruch. Of course I don’t go ghost hunting in school, but I walk around the school on my spare time expecting to discover something or somewhere new and interesting. Like abalone and ghost hunting, going with a group is better than going alone, because group mates can help each other out. I’m glad that I started with a blocked schedule, so I can explore the school with a bunch of people who, I believe, have the same interest.

Reflection for NYTimes Project

Sports Make the World Go Round

For the NYTimes Project, our group decided to chose the topic on sports. Sports may not be an issue or concern to our first semester at Baruch, but sports is important. Around the world, many people are often obese or overweight and one of the most important way to become a health weight is by doing sports. Playing basketball, swimming, and other sports can help us exercise to keep our body healthy. Those who don’t may have more illnesses like the flu… I believe that if everyone were to participate in a sport to keep our body moving and improving blood circulation, I think that everyone would be a lot healthier.

Besides healthiness, sports can help relieve stress. With midterms and finals, students at Baruch often become quite stressed, staying in the library overnight to study or doing homework until three in the morning. By occasionally playing sports like volleyball, handball, swimming, etc., I think just by having fun with friends, we can all relieve some stress. During my first semester at Baruch, the homework professors gave were more than I usually had in high school, so adjusting to the time I spend doing homework at night would be stressful sometimes. During club hours, I can always play sports or just simply take a walk around the blocks around campus can help relieve the stress I feel.

The “Bearcat” article is not related to our topic of sports, but I feel that Human Trafficking is an important concern to Baruch students and others everywhere. Everyday while I travel from Baruch to my home (or vice versa), I always become worried about being attacked by some stranger or something along those lines… Because I always read articles and hear about people steal phones and stabbing those who refuse, I get weary about myself going home on the subway or walking home late at night with no one… A bigger issue would be human trafficking because young children and adults are always being snatched right from their lives and are sold into the world of human trafficking. Since those people would rather prey on younger adults than old people, I think that we are more exposed to the risk of being trafficked.

10 songs about me

Posted by yy158804 in Uncategorized

Welcome to my blog post. My name is Jakob Yusupov and I am 17 years old. I live in Forest Hills, and I attended Queens Highschool for the Sciences. I live with both my parents, as well as 2 younger brothers named Mark and Michael, and an adorable little orange cat named Simon. I intend on majoring in Political Science, and pursing a Law Degree after Baruch College. Some of my hobbies include swimming and boxing, as well as snowboarding in the Winter. I was on the swim team in high-school, and I am currently on the Baruch Swim Team. Over the Summer, I am a NYC Lifeguard at Rockaway beach. It has been my job for 2 years and hopefully many more.

The songs i picked reflect who I am because they are no single genre, nor am I. Whether its the instrumental songs of the Beatles, or the electronic bass of Zeds Dead, I am someone that exhibits very different characteristics in different situations. I believe that life is short, and with that being said, we must treasure every moment of it. We should try new things, face our fears, and tell our loved ones how much they mean to us. Life is random, and you never know what the next day has in store. I am very ambitious, and strive to make my limited time on this planet eventful.

Music has never been a big part of my life, but no one can say that they do not enjoy listening to their favorite songs and artists. My playlist hopefully tells you something about me, and my beliefs. we may have something in common, but no one will love every song on the list, and that is what makes us all so unique, different, and most importantly, a pleasure to learn about.

Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody

The Beatles-Imagine

Mac Miller-Donald Trump

Eminem-Run Rabbit Run

Zeds Dead-Son Flux Flickers

Mt Eden-Sierra Leone

The Glitch Mob-Animus Vox

Seether-Fake It

Kanye West-Stronger

Lana Del Rey-Video Games
