FRO Blog

The following photos describe a little bit about myself. The first photo is  a picture of my best friends and teammates after we graduated from Sachem East High School on Long Island. The next few are pictures of my teammates and I at Spring New Balance National in Greensboro, North Carolina. We trained through the summer and competed during the summer. My friend and I are holding up our best friend, the defending National Champion, after she received All-American in the race. This was the most competitive and most exciting race I’ve ever had the opportunity to compete in. The next few pictures are of my family. My sister, in particular, has been my role model my entire life because of her drive, awesome personality and success. Our entire lives, we’ve been extremely close and have a special sort of bond. The next photo is of my puppy, Oliver.  He is a little papillon, which is a French breed. The last two photos are from Spain. Over the summer, my sister and I traveled to Spain for two weeks. During the time, we visited Barcelona, Valencia, Granada and Seville. The architecture and art in these towns were so breathtakingly beautiful. Also, the food was so authentic and delicious. The last picture is a Spanish dish called Paella, consisting of seafood, rice and other seasonings.  This was the best vacation I’ve ever been on. The old world architecture and culture was something I never experienced prior and would love to go back and explore even more. Thus, these pictures show a little bit more about who exactly I am.

Its hard for me to come up with just ten songs that describes me. The reason being, my preference to listen to many different genres of music. But for this playlist, i decided to go with the ten songs that i felt most represented my choice in music and my personality. As you will hear in my playlist, the songs that i chose doesn’t really have a loud tone or sound but rather sounds soulful to one’s ear. Well that’s my opinion at least. Most of the songs also have a deep meaning behind it and usually carries a message that to me, is powerful. Take for example, Same Love, sung by Macklemore. The song has a positive message, in that it tries to garner support for thousands of gay people who have been condemned by their society. Another one of my songs, one day, by Matisyahu, also carries a strong message as it tries to preach non violence and peace between people. So you can see from just two of my songs, what kind of music i like to listen to. I try to make myself into a better person through being inspired by songs such as those in my playlist. The message that these songs bring is what i try to embody myself on. The message of peace, unity and equality are strong values of mine and listening to these songs further justifies that.

  1. Not Going Back- Childish Gambino
  2. In for the Kill- La Roux
  3. Lost- Frank Ocean
  4. Street Lights- Kanye West
  5. Come as you are- Nirvana
  6. Royals- Lorde
  7. Everything is Embarrassing- Sky Ferreira
  8. I know You Care- Ellie Goulding
  9. Diamonds- Rihanna
  10. Fireworks- Drake

Music has always defined me, although perhaps I didn’t live through the exact message these songs have, but I let every word, cadence, hook, and beat influence me. I think, Not Going Back and In For the Kill are my outward appearances, and generally my attitude. I will not let anything from the past impede me. Street Lights and Lost are two songs that I think describe the way I feel. I am not exactly sure where I’m going or what I’m doing but as I have said before, I’m motivated. I would hope Royals and Come as you are the two songs my peers would relate to me. I really do not hold any bias, and I’m not all for that lavish lifestyle. I don’t have fun just because everyone else is into it, or make disingenuous relationships. I like people for who they are, when no one is watching. I’d hope people can be open towards me because I open discussion. Everything is Embarrassing and I know you care, are songs that I wish didn’t hit home but do. It just describes previous relationships that didn’t  end the way I wanted to, and really represent my fears. The things which I controlled, that went wrong. Finally, Diamonds and Fireworks are two songs that connect with me on many levels. The songs don’t define me as a whole, but they represent specific moments in my life that changed the trajectory of it permanently. These were moments where all of a sudden I wasn’t lost the answers came to me. Which is just about the most clarity I’ve ever got in my entire life. I guess that’s why I love music so much, it takes you to a different world and makes you think.

My Playlist

How difficult it is to tell someone what your favorite song or artist is when there are so many, and they all mean something different to you, depending on the mood. For my playlist I chose the ten songs that seem to generally cover my music interests. They range from all sorts of genres and decades, but all fill in little missing pieces of who I am. Artists like Frank Sinatra, and Julie London are the two representations of the music type I rarely reveal that I like. The whole time period of Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong and so on will always find itself somewhere in my music library. In general,  I am more drawn to happy songs, something that gets me going with good lyrics and a good beat or melody, but I do like a good sad song that gets you in the very pit of your stomach and makes you want to cry. When it comes to music that I can completely lose myself in, there’s nothing better than DJs like Tiesto, Hardwell, Swedish House Mafia, Armin van Buuren, Deadmau5, Avicii, and Steve Aoki to name a few. It’s just hard to sit still when listening to them. Besides that it’s all pretty relaxed and feel-good music with some punk, metal, and classical music thrown in-between.

I’m sure all of you listen to music one way or another. Whether it’s the radio or those set of songs that always play at parties or even other people’s music you hear through their loud headphones. I don’t have a specific genre that I like to listen to because it all depends on the song. As long as it has a good beat or it’s catchy I really don’t mind listening to it. The ten songs I picked are not necessarily my absolute favorite, but they do cover a lot of genres. The first four, Till I Collapse, Sing for the Moment, Not Afraid and Lose Yourself by Eminem are basically about never giving up on yourself. He talks about getting back up even when you’ve been knocked down and to seize the moment when you get a chance. You can’t let your opportunities go to waste and that’s why I love those four the most from him. Holy Grail is an example of one of those catchy songs that I like. I Love My Life is about appreciating life, which I do because I love all my friends and family to death and I’m grateful for everything I have. Can’t Hold Us and Danza Kuduro are great songs for partying and dancing. I have a large family and pretty much every week someone has some type of occasion. I love to party and have a good time. It’s a great way to just forget about school and relax. Young Forever speaks to me because I feel like time is just flying by and sometimes I just want to pause and take it all in. Calling is just a taste for the rock songs I also like.

http://grooveshark.com/playlist/Songs+That+Describe+Me/90754879

These are the 10 songs that describe me as a person. These genres of these songs are rap and house music. Drake has always been my favorite rapper and his music actually has a meaning, such as Furthest thing on his new album describing that everyones far from perfection, Trust issues from Take Care describing, well, trust issues and how not everyone is who the say they are, and All me which describes how only you can bring yourself to the top. Big seans, “all figured out” also impacted me in a way because the lyrics leave you thinking and shows you that you might have everything but you dont have it all figured out.Basically all the rap songs i put up leave a meaning that makes you want to do better and be the best you can be, which is why these songs mean a lot to me. At the same time, i love house music  just because you should work hard and play hard. House music brings me to a world that is just good vibes, great moods, and an amazing time. House music makes me forget stress and honestly gets me amped up and puts me back into a good mood. Lastly, i put the song “John Wall” in the playlist because basketball is one of the things in my life i cherish and this song gets me ready amped and hype to play the game, its so energetic and it gets me going.

Alex’s Playlist

Hey, Alex here. So I put together a playlist of my favorite songs, take a listen.  What I can say about myself is that I’m always changing. Last year I wasn’t who I am today, and next year I won’t be who I am today. That’s why I sort of take songs from all types of genres. In particular I do like gangsta-rap. It’s got a certain attraction that I can’t explain. I do love my mob movies. The Godfather and The Departed are probably my favorites. That’s probably why I like the lyrics in Dual of the Iron Mic or N.Y. State of Mind. Pink Floyd is really chill, and it represents the part of me that just loves to chill out. Listening to Pink Floyd on the ride to school on the train is blissful as hell. And last but not least, I’ve got Metallica there for when I’m in that rhythmic flow. This has been my music for like the past four to five years, and I haven’t gotten tired of it yet. I think the different genres kind of balance each other out or something.

Amba’s Playlist

Hi everyone! So, as most of you probably know, I’m a huge music person. It’s my time machine, my escape, and one of the most important things to me. I was first introduced to music when I was really little, and ever since, I haven’t been able to get enough. I wouldn’t say I have a specific style of music, and as a musician, I generally like all types of music. Mostly, however, I tend to listen closely to the lyrics in a song. Usually, if I can relate to it somehow, or even if it seems like a really powerful song in general, I tend to enjoy it more. Most people who look at my iPod think that a bunch of people use it, (or that I’m a crazy person) because I have albums of Elvis, the Beatles, and Kansas, to Adele, Ed Sheeran, and even some Disney songs. I love having a variety of music to listen to, so that when I create music myself, I can try and develop my own unique style and not just some repetition of the same ten songs we constantly hear on the radio. I think this playlist represents who I am, because I’m not just one uniform person; just as my playlist isn’t one uniform style of music. I’m kind of a bizarre melting pot of a bunch of crazy things that make up who I am, and in the end, I’m glad I’ve got such a good mix. It’s good to be different.

My photos

I grew up in an extremely small town on Long Island called Bayport. My family is the fourth generation to grow up there so my family and I are extremely close with everyone in the community. You will notice that my photos are mainly me with my famiy and friends. I am a very family oriented guy and love to have a great time with my friends. The first photo is, of me and my two sisters in Disney, this past November. My parents have taken all of us to Disney every two years since the year I was born. After going through my cancer scare, they decided to purchase the Disney Timeshare and the English bulldog in the second photo, as a gift to me to celebrate being cancer free. Because of this, I really appreciate going to Disney every year and spending ten days with my family. The sister to the right of me is basically my best friend and role model. She has been there for me through it all and I am very excited to say that I will be her “Man Of Honor” in her wedding this June in Aruba. The photos with the other girls are my nine closest friends.   We have remained close friends since seventh grade. The photo of me at the podium at graduation is of me delivering my Class President Speech. All throughout High School, I was voted Class President and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it because my class was named the most successful and enthusiastic class in fundraising and class events. I am extremely thankful that I can say I had many friends all throughout my high school career. My parents have always worked hard to give my sisters and I the best childhood possible. Although they spoil me to death, I do not take anything for granted! http://www.flickr.com/photos/103057908@N08/

Shaquile’s Playlist

http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/Freshman+Orientation/90749445

The playlist that I have constructed is a mixture of songs filled with a depressing message and a hatred to life overall. I think this represents my feelings somewhat. The reason I enjoy these songs so much is because of the way Tyler is able to speak his mind with no filter. He expressed many of the thoughts that some young adults may have and can relate to. I feel in songs like “Golden”,”BASTARD” and “window” he is able to demonstrate this will. Although the imagery in these songs is horrific, there also something appealing about them. While some of these songs have a very graphic message others have a much simpler one that I can also understand. Examples such as the song “slater”, “assmilk” and “radicals” share an overall message of doing whatever makes you happy and living life to the fullest. Its important to consider these things because at the end of the day your really by yourself. Although almost all the songs on this playlist are somber and devalue allot of the things in our lives there was one song that really impressed me. “Diamonds from sierra leone” performed with a live orchestra is probably one of my favorite performances/songs of all time. Its one of the reason why Kanye West is the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. The message behind the song is timeless. Overall it makes you think about the value of the things you own and how it affects others. I also enjoyed the way he used the orchestra to refine his music and give it a classical feel. I enjoyed the creativity put into the piece of work. Overall I like the depressing horror core music that tyler produces and at the same time respect the message and production value that kanye has in his music. The songs have honest messages and honesty is one of the most important things to me.
