Who Is Sam Goodman?

“Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them” – Robert Jarvik

No one gets anywhere by sitting around and playing it safe – if you have never failed, you’ve done something wrong. I do not let anything stop me, except for the occasional law of physics. I became an Eagle Scout at the age of sixteen, been to five foreign countries (not counting layovers), am responsible for 300 Sea Scouts across three states as Liberty Flotilla Boatswain, and translated for foreign dignitaries, just to name a few. As I sit writing this post during my five-hour break between classes, I realize that this is the first time I have had any great amount of time to myself. So why do I do all of this? Well, why not? I like it and want to keep pushing myself to do more. Yes, there are obstacles and yes, I have been told that some of the things I want to do are impossible. But I don’t care. I see everything through to the end. Sometimes I have to step back and think about how I am doing something; other times all it takes is brute force and sheer determination. If I fail, I try again. If I can’t succeed on my own, then I ask for help from those around me and give credit where credit is due. And because I know that it is often difficult to achieve something alone, I help those around me, regardless of how big or how small it may seem. I don’t quit and I don’t let those around me quit; that is who I am.

I’m Alexandra Grady, but go by Sasha; I’m originally from Kaliningrad, Russia, but was adopted by a Filipino mother and a Polish/Irish father as a baby. This had a supreme impact on my life from an early age because my parents were always very open about my roots and my story, and I consider myself more influenced by their background than my own. I grew up in a small town in New Jersey, and always had a connection to New York City as we lived close enough to visit during breaks and on weekends to see shows and go shopping. When it came time to do my college applications, I only applied to city schools for that reason! I was fortunate enough to have my best friends next door to me, where I spent as much time as in my own house. I’m still as close to them as I am to my parents. My family was also very into traveling, and we’ve been all over Europe; I love Paris and Greece, and hope to study abroad in London in a few years.

Who am I?

My name is Roman Shelkov. I come from an immigrated family; My parents are originally from Russia. This allowed me to learn and now speak, write and read in two languages: english and russian. My childhood was full of interesting experiences and near death situations. The hospital practically became my second home. I was born and raised in Brooklyn but lived several years in Russia due to financial reasons. I love to travel and would like to visit many countries in my future. I attend college in the city and hope to work and live in it someday as well. In my free time, I play tennis which along with my participation in community and school government got me a scholar athlete scholarship. Food is my best friend. I am always looking for a new place or cuisine to try. I eat everything and anything. My role model is my dad. I learn and look up to him as I want to live my life just like he does. Always trying to be happy and looking for the positives in life. Lastly, I like to be in control and be on top of everything. I always strive to become the best at whatever I put my mind too; for example, I became president of my highschool.
