This picture represents my experience at Baruch this semester because for many of my assignments I tried and tried to not procrastinate, but it never really worked out. It reminds me of the many nights throughout the semester when I would have a paper due the next day and I was just starting the assignment. I didn’t really get much sleep, but it would always catch up to me by the end of the day on Thursday. The good thing was that I could sleep in the very next day. Time management was something that I definitely did poor on this semester and I know that I have to work on it for the rest of my college years. I got really caught up in all the free time that comes with college but I didn’t really do a good job of managing it. Luckily, I’ve always managed to do my work and hand it in on time. I don’t think it’ll work out for the years to come, especially as I start to get internships and join new clubs.  What I learned about myself is that I need to try to do things earlier so that I won’t have to regret it earlier, which is something I found myself doing many times throughout this semester. I learned that college work is going to push me farther than I’ve ever had to go, but I can adapt to it because I am a very flexible person. My favorite memory in our Freshman Seminar class is when we went over each of our classes and what we could do to change certain things about the class or the outcome of the class. It was very enjoyable because it helped us realize that many of the things that were challenging in the class could be changed by our own actions. It almost seemed silly for us to not realize this, so this is why it was my favorite memory in our Freshman Seminar class. As for next semester, I look forwarding to joining new clubs and meeting new people. I didn’t get to join many clubs this semester because I wanted to get accustomed to college life before putting too much on my plate. Next semester I am definitely looking forward to joining those clubs that I was interested in this semester but didn’t get the chance to join. I’m also looking forward to meeting new people because of the fact that Baruch is so diverse and it’s exciting to know that I can get to know people from literally all over the world. Meeting people from different countries will allow me to learn about all the different cultures that I have not been exposed to up until this year. Another thing I look forward to is applying for programs that will help me get internships in the future. But I will not procrastinate this time (I swear) because I really want to get into these programs for they can shape what the rest of my career in college will look like and possibly the rest of my life.

Gabriela Urena’s Monologue

Before Baruch, I didn’t know what to expect.

I was nervous, terrified even

As I walked up to Baruch.

My top priority was getting good grades

And I didn’t care about anything else.

I viewed college in the same way that I viewed high school:

As four years of school

Where you tried to get the best grades

In order to move on to the next step.

But I learned that college is much more than that.

College is what sets the stage for the rest of your life.

You meet new friends,

Get harder classes,

And work on building your resume.

This is the time where you have to choose your classes wisely,

Decide on a major,

And most importantly,

Manage your time wisely.

You have more freedom,

But also more responsibility,

And it’s your job to balance the two.

But in Baruch,

You’re not completely alone.

You have the SACC,

STARR,

A peer mentor,

And your peers

Who you can always reach out to.

So try to make the most of College,

Because you’re going to be here

For a while.

Hello all, my name is Gabriela Urena, although I prefer Gabbie. For my blog I put pictures of things that I feel are most important in my life.

The first image is of my dad, who not only is my hero, but he’s my backbone and my other half. He’s the one who always pushed me to always do my best in school. He’s the reason why I am so determined to do well in school because he always showed me that I could do better, and that there was always something that I could improve on.

The second image is of my brother and I. I consider him to be one of the most important people in my life. Ever since he was born, I’ve felt as if he was always someone that I needed to protect and also someone that I needed to guide in life.

The third image is a picture of my brother and my cousins on a mattress. This picture is important to me because it symbolizes my creativity and it serves as a reminder to always remember that while I am growing up, I am still young. I took it one day when my uncle told my cousins and I to throw out the mattress, and instead of bringing it out like any regular person I decided to do things a bit more interesting.

The fourth image is of my best friend and I. I chose this picture because my best friend is a person that has always been there for me. Whenever I want to slip through the cracks and fall apart, she is always there to pick me up. She is part of the reason why I am able to overcome the obstacles that seem too big to overcome alone.

The fifth image is of myself with awards and scholarships that I received in the last school year from my high school. It shows me that I am able to do well in school and that hard work pays off in the long run.

The sixth image of the Virgin Mary for Mexico, La Virgen de Guadalupe. This image symbolizes my faith and the importance of religion in my life. Whenever I find myself with many troubles, I pray to God and this Virgin and I try my best to not lose faith in them.

The seventh image is of characters from one of my favorite soap operas. I don’t watch much television, but when I do it is almost always a soap opera. I like to watch them in spanish because it helps me improve my spanish. Also, I love the drama.

The eighth image is of a road in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is where my parents were born and although it is not my home country, I still like to think of it as my country. It helps me remember my roots and when I come from. It’s also my favorite place to go to during vacations.
