One of the eight lessons Richard Stengel is “Appearances matter-and remember to smile.” The way one presents themselves to others is going to leave a lasting impression, while a smile can hide how a person really feels in a welcoming manner. Nelson Mandela is a great example for this lesson. Although he was sent to prison on Robben Island, he never publicly showed his bitterness and anger towards those who oppressed him. He chose to smile and convey forgiveness hoping he would lead by example. This is like a smack in the face to his oppressors because regardless of having to spend many years imprisoned, he refused to be broken and continued to be a leader worth following.
This lesson is one that people should always remember. It conveys one’s fortitude by being able to keep their head up and smile even though they have endured many hardships. That is an important and admirable quality of a leader. Putting on a smile shows that regardless of any opposition one can keep moving forward and set aside those negative feelings. The first thing I notice about a person is their appearance because it is the first thing I see. If they happen to be smiling and presenting themselves in an approachable manner then I will be less inclined to ignore this person. Mandela made himself presentable to others allowing his thoughts and viewpoints to be considered and ultimately making him a person people would want to follow.
