Hello everyone! My name is Victor Smokilo. On Friday, I visited the Hong Kong club with my main interest being to see what kind of people were interested in the club. To much of my surprise, most of the people were of Asian descent. I found this interesting. How Baruch loves to promote diversity and cultural awareness, yet everyone just sticks to their own culture. Rather than have Hong Kong club, they should mix 2 cultures together. For example, the Israel/Iran club, where people can share their ideas rather than having one culture be the central idea of a club.
The people who ran the club were very accepting of my friends and I. The club itself was filled with many accepting people, each with an interesting family history. I wasn’t really looking to join the club but after visiting, I feel like I should try it out. I also met a few people like Jeremy Lang and Buk Lao. Buk had just come from Korea and I asked him, “why do you need to go to this club if you spent the last 30 years living in Korea?”. He responded “This club helps me adapt, because although it’s roots are Korean, it is has adapted many American values which will help me transition to American culture”.
I’m going to keep looking around for more culturally centered clubs, however I don’t want to join a club that describes my cultures and values. I’m looking for a club with people who have completely different values so I can help promote cultural diversity and make Baruch a better place.
