I chose to attend an interest meeting for the student club, FemCode, a club dedicated to exposing women to the world of coding. FemCode seeks to empower women by promoting their advancement in the technological world.
I chose to join FemCode because I am interested in learning how to code and I felt that I would learn how to code in a structured system rather than doing it on my own. I have already attempted to learn coding on my own through various online websites, such as Codeacademy, however I find that I lack the motivation to sit down for a good while and just learn. I need someone else to be there with me, guiding me through the process so that I don’t give up every time I encounter something difficult. I am hoping that FemCode will give me the opportunity to pursue computer science in a more professional setting because it is something I truly enjoy and would like to pursue further.
I also joined the student club Hack for Baruch as way of supplementing what I am learning from FemCode. I talked with the leaders of FemCode and they told me that they would have teaching workshops every two weeks and I was hoping that the workshops provided by Hack for Baruch would fill up the weeks FemCode offers no workshops. I have already attended one workshop given by Hack for Baruch and I found it to be extremely informative and very welcoming to beginners like me.
I am currently looking forward to attending a hackathon with the board members of FemCode. I was told by the president that hackathons were great for people like me because it gave me a chance to connect with professionals in the computer science field. I would also be required to compete and I would get to learn a lot from the workshops they offer.
