Freshman Seminar Fall 2017 – BTA

Academic Blog Post #2-Zipporah Diaz

Earlier in September, I attended the Study Abroad fair and learned so much about alternate ways in which Baruch students can get a college education.  I have always been in love with the idea of travel.  However, I was never able to really get the chance to go to the places I have always dreamed of going.  I have traveled to a couple of states but never outside the country (unless you count the Bahamas??)  I have always wanted to travel across the world and experience different cultures firsthand and visit some of the world’s most beautiful sites.  Studying abroad is something that I am very excited for, especially as a Dean’s Scholar.  I would really love to spend a semester or year in France.  I have been taking French since the eighth grade and automatically fell in love with the language.  My friend in the picture is actually a girl from my high school who always sat next to me in French class! French is quite a complicated language to learn because of the accent needed to speak it and the constant conjugations (just like in Spanish) but when spoken correctly and fluently, it is quite beautiful.  I hope that maybe during my time in France, I become fluent in the language!  I feel that studying abroad is not only a once in a lifetime experience that every college student (especially us Dean’s Scholars!) should take advantage of, but a definite add-on to the educational experience.  I mean, what better way to learn a language or a culture than living in the country itself!  It allows us to become more well-rounded and knowledgeable about the people around us and the world we live in.  As we get older, I think it is important to reach out and seize these kinds of opportunities because they make us better people in the long run because we become more engaged with the world we live in and the people we share it with.
