Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CRA

Whitney Museum

After coming to Baruch and especially the freshman seminar course, I have made a lot of new friends. Sharing an English class with the same people in my seminar class makes the experience at Baruch even greater. What tops this is that in our English class we had a chance to go to the Whitney Museum as a class trip. Last time I was ever on a class trip in school was back when I was in middle school, and that trip was pretty boring. This trip, however, was different from the rest. In college no one expects the professor to actually host a trip to a museum in place of a lecture. But our English professor incorporated this trip into his lesson plans to give us something we can actually enjoy in college. It was my first time to the Whitney Museum and with the tickets free because of the CUNY ID, it was even more of an enjoyable experience. We got to spend a whole hour and a half exploring the museum as a class. Not only that but the view from the 8th floor of the Whitney was amazing, something everyone should see at least once. It was on this trip that I got to learn more about the city I live in, and the many areas that make my head go crazy. Before this trip, I honestly never knew there was an A, B, or C train in this city. This trip to the Whitney has really taught me many things about a city that I thought I knew all about. It makes me curious to see what more this wonderful city has to offer and what more is there to come in the future.

NYC

Born and raised in the wonderful place of New York City, I’ve come to learn that this city is different from every other city in America. In this great place, we’re blessed with clear quality water that flows through the Hudson River and along the sanitized beaches. Anything you buy in this city compared to any other city has a higher quality which justifies the jacked up cost and the tax. You can never have enough of the weather here as it changes in the blink of an eye. When it snows you’ll always get more than what is expected. Snow here is also accompanied by the lovely patches of black slush and huge puddles that we all love to step in. Traffic in this city is never a problem, roads are always easy to navigate, and the MTA really cares about its customers. The housing here is also really affordable, with the average square foot in NYC being $424 and Manhattan $1,538. Not only is the housing affordable, but hot coffee is actually cheaper than ice coffee here. With all this, there’s totally no other city that comes close to beating the so-called “City That Never Sleeps” in a sleeping contest.

Bloomberg 2 Workshop

This wasn’t something I planned on going to nor did I have known that this kind of workshop existed at Baruch. I first learned about this workshop from a friend of mine and decided that as a group we would go together. I thought this workshop would be an influential person making a speech on how he or she got rich. I mean it is called “Bloomberg workshop” and the guy is the 11th richest person in America and the former mayor of NYC. But as I came into the workshop I saw a professor giving a lecture in the stock hall and didn’t think that was the workshop. It didn’t take long before I sat down and began to understand what they meant by “Bloomberg workshop”. Everyone inside the room was eager to learn about this program called “Bloomberg”. I never knew such programs existed before. It was my first time using this program and I have to admit it’s a pretty nice program. I believe the professor told us the reason why there are only 10 Bloomberg terminals in this room is that it costs $2000 a month to rent the program out per computer. During the workshop, I got to experience many different aspects of the program like exporting a stock list onto an excel sheet and also to be able to maneuver through the program. Although many of things that were said in the lecture I didn’t know at first I started to get a grasp at what the program was meant to do and why it’s important to have knowledge of this program. My favorite part of the program has to be when the professor showed us how social media directed at the company’s affect the prices of the stock. Overall it was a fun experience going to my first workshop with my group of friends not knowing what to do on the Bloomberg terminals and having a fun experience trying to follow up with the professor.

ESA first meeting:D

During the summer before class began at Baruch, I was chatting with a few of my upperclassmen friends about advice at Baruch. A few of them mentioned joining a club at the beginning to help make new friends as well as to help waste time during those club hours. Two of them recommended me to come and check out the ESA club which hosted events and activities that I was mildly interested in. Influenced by the people around me to join this club I went with a few of my friends to their first Interest Meeting on 9/7/17 to find a lot of people happened to share the same interest with me. In that room, there were at least forty others that were at the meeting. They gave us an explanation about the club and broke us up into groups to get to know each other more. It was fun to find out what other people thought about the activities that I enjoyed. They also gave out refreshments and pizza which was also a bonus. After the icebreakers, it became a socializing room where everyone would just get together and have conversations about many different things. It’s really nice when you get to meet people for the first time in your life and a few minutes later you go on to being good friends. Everyone began socializing for the next hour or so like they knew each other. It was as if everyone came together and just forgot about their downs and only focused on the ups. Coming to the first general interest meeting for ESA helped me make new friends, create my first few steps as a first year at Baruch.
