Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CRA

Monologue

7 AM Classes. Homework from 6 different classes.

Reading chapter after chapter, page after page my eyes feel like they are going to fall off.

I miss math before all these letters were added.

I’m pretty sure I don’t need to learn music history.

What job interviewer is gonna ask me when Bach died.

I always end up asking myself is it worth it.

Never mindill suck it up and try my best to get an A.

No one wants to take a finance student with a GPA lower than 3.8.

30 hour work weeks.

Commission pay out paper work,

T-Mobile audits, Sales receipts customer follow ups

that blissful break when no customers come to the store so I can take a nap.

Yet my mind doesn’t let me sleep because the stress keeps my mind awake.

Waking up at 5 Am staring at forex charts

At this point I hate my life

Pip after  Pip chart after chart finally im in profit

Nvm usd/jpy just dropped

Even though its hard as hell it’s the only time I see my Future

Family responsibilities.

Checking my little sister homework, taking my mom places she needs to go

Sitting In the car doing homework while she’s away

college life is extremely hectic

8 different apartments

My light switch is loose, my faucet is leaking, there’s a small gap between my window and net My guy its about to be winter why does that matter now

what fly is going to fly into your window.

Life just becomes more hectic by the day

but the blissful moment of accomplishment while i’m in my bed

I contemplating everything i’ve accomplished so far

and the things i have left over makes every minute of my restless days worth it.

Career Workshop Blog

The first thing everyone tells you about the “College Experience” is that you get a lot more free time to yourself. With morning classes, Working 30 hours a week, Family responsibilities, Prior commitments, and friends there comes a point where it feels like there’s not enough hours in a day to get through life. You start out studying for a music test get side tracked by a call from your boss and end up having to drive your mom to your aunt’s house and forget about the paper due in 48 hours and the test you have to study for that’s the following day. Overall college life has just been a big step for me and i’m trying to adjust.

This morning my friend Noor asked me “what did you write your blog post on?” it sent me back in a spiral. I completely forgot that we had a blog post due Wednesday night. She told me about the event she was going to with a group of my fellow pears from our freshmen seminar class and would count towards the career workshop section of the blogs we had to have written. Going to a Bloomberg seminar brought back a lot of memories from me. As the presenter went on to explain what stocks were, what a Bloomberg terminal was, and the amazing facts behind not only how expensive they were but the vast opportunities that it offered took me back to my days as an intern working at Macquarie. My favorite part of the internship was the fact I had access to a Bloomberg terminal and got to physically trade with it. The charts on Bloomberg are so much better than the ones I use now on Trading-View.  The instructor advised us on many details about the terminals. Facts that I didn’t even know. One for all was the amazing fact that there is a small key at the bottom that when pressed you get live help from a Bloomberg operator.  Using one for 6 weeks I was not aware of this at all and instantaneously regretted all of the minor questions I asked my boss while on the job.

Overall the experience was great. I had read online about Baruch being one of the very few colleges to have a live trading floor and was excited to be able to see it. As a future finance major it felt nice to be welcomed with open arms into the trading floor and learn about the different learning programs offered by Baruch. Ill definitely be signing up for more in the future after I can finish all the work I have on my plate now.

Find Your Place

One of the most stressed things during the college application process is diversity. Every campus tour, every college fair, every scholarship program, the first thing a representative would say is “We have a diverse campus community. “. After spending a semester taking a course at Columbia university I looked around the room to realize what “diverse” meant. Being the only student in a classroom of skin tone other than causation the feeling was different. I didn’t feel like an outcast but during conversations they would ridicule things about my culture. The common perception that all South Asians are associated as being indian . The amazing fact that a Muslim man can be married Four times, and everything from the way my beard was lined to why do I have a beard. “Is it religious?” ( No I just look like a kid without facial hair)  “ What happens when you decide to shave?” ( Nothing what type of question is that). None of that ever bothered me but the feeling of being under someone’s finger being questioned didn’t feel appropriate.

I had some bad perception that college life at baruch would be the same until last spring. Before entering baruch my bestfriend from highschool Auchal invited me to come to a BSA ( Bengali Student Association) event. With all the dancing loud music and friendly smiles the environment felt hospitable and I enjoyed being apart of the bigger bearcat community.   Going to the event In an awkward way I felt at home. Some of the people around me had similar backgrounds while others weren’t and it was completely fine. It showed me that Baruch offered diversity. With this exposure and ability to be comfortable around everyone in the club I sought this as a place for me.  My Freshmen seminar mentor told us that we were supposed to join a club this year. With the warm and open invitations from my friend and her colleagues I felt comfortable joining this past Tuesday. Not only to be around older baruch students who have advice and offer support to us younger students but because they also offer many ways to help not only my community but the international community. BSA does fundraising events to support different causes. From care packages to syrian refugees who have recently moved to New York to  students in bangladesh who can’t afford books for school because they are orphans. I joined among various other freshmen to become a bigger part of the baruch community and hopefully find my place in this institution. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank.
