Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CRA

Whitney Museum

The Whitney museum was a great experience for us all. We went as an English class and learned more about modern art and its importance in society. As you enter the exhibits, there are many things to notice. The lighting was perfect. For most of the places, the light wasn’t too bright or too dim. I noticed that for the exhibits where they had T.V.’s the lights were off so it can draw attention to the program rather than anything else. This helps the guests really look at the main point then just ignoring it. They also grabbed the guests attention by raising the volume outloud for people to catch on. Other exhibits such as the design with the barbed wire, they did the complete opposite. The had the light much brighter than usual because it isn’t something that calls attention by itself. It’s merely just barbed wire. It didn’t have bright lights from the T.V. or an sound to grab attention to it so the lighting really helped in that case. The people at the museum were very put together. There was a man with a scarf wrapped around his neck with one side hanging on each end. He had these rectangular glasses and boot cut khakis. He also threw on a light sweater and had on some shiny black loafers. He was sitting beside a lady that was well put together with cowboy ankle boots, skinny jeans and a fitted top. Everyone was pretty much dressed the same. They had the same trends of fashion. Overall I loved the museum. They put everything together well and it’s wonderful to explore. Monologue

Knowing you have a writing assignment due the next day,but absolutely absent-minded on what to write about. Is it just me or whenever you have an assignment to do everything else becomes so intriguing? I find my cat licking the milk so fascinating. Now I don’t usually procrastinate like this. I tried to do it before, it was just not working out for me. Whenever I actually had time to do my work, I wasted it. I tell my self okay, I’ll get started. I quickly check the time and it’s 8:36. I figured may as well finish watching my YouTube videos until 9 then get started. Before you know it, it was 9:06. As you can tell, it pretty much becomes a routine. My sister asks me what I have to write about. When I reply to her, “anything” she looks at me with a puzzled face. The thing is, everything seems reversed. You can have the shortest prompt to write about and it would be the hardest assignment. Why is it that when we have such a specific question we know what to write, yet the other way around we’ll go crazy. The monologue. Everyone talked about how “easy” it would be, yet we’ve all been fooled and are cramming it the day before it’s due.

Bloomberg

I was in my English class and the last thing on my mind was that I had a blog post to do. So many things were on my mind with midterms coming up. I decided to check out the Baruch app and see what they had for me. I read through and found this Bloomberg trading event very intriguing. I figured it would help me see if I would want to do something like that in the future. I entered a little late and everyone seemed very interested in what was going on. I was excited because it was my first time in the trade room. I felt very sophisticated and smart. I walked in as the guy was talking about how to read revenues and profits. I also thought that the teacher would be very boring like many others, but he connected with us. He engaged a conversation within us, so it didn’t feel like a boring lecture. He sparked some of my classmates questions and caught our attention. He also showed us how to read some revenues, then asked us practice questions to sort of test us. This definitely made it more successful. Sadly, this workshop had to come to an end. We were very disappointed in that. I learned a lot of things that I never understood before. Now I understand more about stocks and revenues then I did before. Now I am going to consider finance as my major because it truly is fascinating. I am glad he took our information down and is going to invite us to more of his events. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Suicide Prevention

Hi! My name is Noor and I’m a freshman here at Baruch. I recently visited a workshop that was for suicide prevention. They had this event on the 2nd floor to advocate suicide prevention. Last Sunday was National Suicide Prevention Day, so the people were trying to educate students and explain to them that there is help if you need it. This years theme for NSP day was “Take a minute, Change a life”. Basically what they are trying to say is that anyone can help. Even if you’re a super busy person, you can still help someone out. You don’t need to pay a ton of money or physically lose something to help a suicidal person. Sometimes all people need is a few uplifting words to give them hope. Sometimes they just need someone to listen to them so they don’t feel alone. Some people don’t realize how much of an issue it is because they have never been in that place or they never knew someone that was or lost them because of suicide. Sadly, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in The United States for all ages. Around 105 people die EVERYDAY in America from this. In the event they talked about Baruch’s counseling center. They really help people out in general. You don’t have to be suicidal to go there. They help if you are feeling depressed or angry or an bad feeling. You can even just go in to vent if you need it. They are a great place to know about while in college and I strongly advice people to go there whenever they need it. Statistics show that of the people that seek some sort of therapy for depression, eighty to ninety percent of them get cured. If you can at least get a person that’s depressed to seek some sort of help from therapy, they most likely succeed from it and it will help them in some sort of way. So remember, spare a minute or two whenever you find the chance. You can save a live.
