Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DFB

CUNY Undergraduate Symposium at Goldman Sachs

For any student going into business, their dream is to get into a top investment bank or accounting firm, it is for me at least. Receiving the email saying that I was accepted into a symposium at the top investment bank felt like an accomplishment for me. Not only was it on opportunity to network with people in business and other students, but it was a window into my dream job. I was going to the headquarters of my life goal. At the symposium, I got the opportunity to meet with students from other CUNYs and other Baruch students. It was interesting to see that students from Hunter or CSI are pursuing the same thing many Baruch students are, a job in the business world. At the event, we got the chance to hear from and speak to, Baruch alum who currently work at Goldman. Their departments ranged from Sales & Trading, to Tech, to Operations. Each one had a different story and each one has been working at Goldman for a different amount of time. One lady, graduated from Baruch and went straight into Goldman, and is still there after 30 years. Another, has been working for Goldman for only 3 months after graduating from Baruch this past June. Some of the things I learned at this event involved how to network, how to build the perfect resume, how to send to the perfect email, and etc. As much as I thought I knew about these things, I realized I still have a lot to learn. My favorite part of the event happened when they spoke about what it takes to get into a place like Goldman. Hearing the different ways the alum got into Goldman has really inspired me, and encouraged me. One guy said he got into Goldman because he talked to random guy in a suit on the subway. Others just worked hard throughout their years in college. They worked in as many internships as they could and made sure they stood out during the application phase for an internship. Speaking to these current Goldman employees and hearing how they got into Goldman, made me believe that I can get into Goldman someday and that it is no longer a dream, it’s a possibility.

P.s. I forgot to take a selfie, this is all I have.

Academics- The Metropolitan Museum of Art

On Thursday, September 28th, my Art-1011 class and I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art(aka. The Met) ;and it was my most memorable museum visit. The purpose of this visit was to get closer to the history and art that we had been studying in class. Therefore, we visited the Ancient Egypt exhibition(one of my favorites) and the Ancient Greece exhibition. After the professor dismissed the visit, everyone split up and continued on with their day. Kukai, Bryan, and I made our way out of the museum. On our way out, I stumbled upon some very interesting paintings; they looked liked photographs which caught my attention. I read the description on the side and analyzed the paintings for about 5 minutes. As I made my way back, Kukai and Bryan were no where to be found. There were hundreds of people walking around this huge hallway, and I was in the middle of it all. This was the beginning of my two hour journey around the Met. Kukai and Bryan were nowhere to be seen, and I did not know my way out. Instead of trying to find an exit, I decided to make the best of the situation I was in. I had gotten a free entrance to one of the biggest museums in the world, was I only going to see Ancient Egypt and Greece? I entered a big red hall with a new exhibition in each room. First, I spent some time flipping through some photographs taken by photo journalists from around the world. After, I took a turn into the WW1 hall, it was cool. I moved along and kept stumbling upon art more intriguing than the last. I walked around for about an hour until I finally decided that I wanted to grab lunch-only, one problem; I didn’t know how to get out. The more I tried to find an exit, the more I couldn’t. At one point, I ended up in the cafeteria on the lower level; it was too expensive. I took a picture of my favorite thing that I stumbled upon and I myself in one of the coolest hallways I have ever been in.

Resume Building Workshop- DSP

Earlier today I attended Delta Sigma Pi’s Resume Building Workshop. Apart from having to attend an event on campus for the blogs, attending one of DSP’s events is required in order to join the fraternity, therefore, this worked out for me, both ways. Having a well organized resume is an essential tool for everyone in any field of study or profession, however, I wanted to know what a businessman’s resume should look like. Soon enough, I am going to be applying to jobs and internships, so this workshop was especially useful to me. I know a “Resume Building Workshop” may sound like a boring event to attend, and I must admit, I did expect to walk into a boring event. However, that was not at all the case. The event started off with the everyone introducing themselves(like always) and quickly moved into what a good resume should look like. Next, we split up into groups and analyzed the sample resume. One important thing that I learned was that a good experience on a resume should be summarized by the following three questions: What did you do? Why did you do it? and How did it contribute to the greater good?. After we got through what a good resume should look like, I spent some time meeting and talking to some of the brothers. They all seemed very enthusiastic to chat with the recruits and share their experiences. Being in that room gave me a sense of community and real brotherhood. I enjoyed being in a room with super cool individuals with very successful careers so far. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank.
