I attended a community service project workshop that studied epiphytes and their relationship with the forests they grow in and the affect they have on the local ecosystem/economy around them, and the global ecosystem/economy. I learned about how epiphytes grow off of trees in specifically the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. This makes the forest the perfect environment to grow coffee, specifically arabica beans. The coffee market is really important to Costa Rica and specifically the Monteverde town. This is because big manufactures like Nestle will make deals with the small coffee farmers. Recently they have been pushing out the coffee farmers and making mass coffee plantations which is destroying the local economy in Costa Rica. It is important for these local farmers to have their product purchased and supported for the economy in Costa Rica to support itself. I learned about community service projects to help preserve the nature in Costa Rica so that they forest remains untouched and local farmers can grow their coffee and support the local economy and country’s economy. Which ultimately has an effect on the global economy.
