Career

This past Thursday, Kris and I went to a Career Panel event, sponsored by ‘Unicef @Brauch” during club hours. During this panel, we learned about the process of networking from non-profit organizations and UN officials. Networking is when people interact with each other to exchange information and develop contacts, especially to further one’s career. Networking was the main concept focused on during the panel. For example, there are many benefits to networking. To start, one will get a generation of referrals and or increased business. It is one of the main reasons why business people decide to participate in networking activities and join networking groups. Another benefit of networking is how people will get opportunities. Some opportunities people will get are joint ventures, client leads, partnerships, speaking and writing opportunities, business or asset sales… the list goes on. Networking also allows people to receive advice from people in the business world. Specifically, networking is a great way to tap into advice and expertise that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to get hold of. One just has to be sure they are getting solid advice from the right person. One aspect I found interesting was how networking can boost one’s self confidence. For instance, by regularly networking, and pushing yourself to talk to people you don’t know, you will get increased confidence the more you do this. This is really important as a business owner, because your business growth is very dependent on talking to people and making connections. Going to this career panel really helped me understand the process of networking and the benefits from it. Being a marketing major and wanting to be in the business world, networking will be very important for me and I am glad I was able to learn more about it at this panel.

Academic: The American Museum of Natural History

On Monday, October 9th, I went to the American Museum of Natural History on the upper west side of Manhattan. It was my first time visiting this museum, or any museum for that matter, and I was very excited. Although it was raining throughout the day, I was able to successfully meet up with Sam, Nick, Alex, and Aidan at the museum. It was shocking to be standing in line for almost an hour to purchase an admission ticket on a holiday, but the wait was worth it. I had been told that the museum is really big, however I did not believe it until I was actually there, and what I saw was breathtaking. We went to multiple exhibits, specifically, we went to the Dinosaur exhibit, the Hall of Biodiversity, Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life, Northwest Coast of Indians, Akeley Hall of African Mammals, and Reptiles and Amphibians. If I had to pick an exhibit that was my favorite, I would have to choose two: the Dinosaur and the Milstein Family Hall exhibits. While walking around the Dinosaur exhibit, consisting of the Saurischain Dinosaurs and the Ornithischain Dinosaurs, I was able to look at dinosaur fossils up close and personal, something I always thought was fascinating. I could not believe the skeletons of the dinosaurs displayed were actually real, I still can’t. I enjoyed how they had a large variety of Dinosaurs and not just the common ones such as the T-Rex, but I liked seeing that too! While walking through the Milstein Family Hall exhibit, I thought it was very informative It was intriguing to learn about various types of sea life that exists within our oceans and seas. Also while in this exhibit, I had the opportunity to listen to the different kinds of whale noises, which I thought was humorous yet interesting at the same time. This trip to the museum assisted me in my first semester at Baruch because I was able to retain and learn new information, and on my way to the AMONH, I was able to locate other museums. Being able to find and visit museums will inevitably help me while at Baruch because learning about history, art, culture, etc. are universally beneficial.

Student Life

Today I went to a GIM for Alpha Phi Omega. When they first approached me at Convocation day, I will admit I wasn’t that interested in joining. However, as I was looking into the club, I realized that I might actually like it.

Although they started the meeting late, I was quite impressed at what they had to offer. APO recruitment chairmen Amy Chen and Kifayat Huda talked about how APO is a co-ed fraternity that is mostly revolving around volunteer work. Their motto is “be a leader, be a friend, be of service.” In other words, APO provides members leadership, friendship, and service.
To start, Kifayat explained how she struggled with talking to large audiences and how she’s a shy person. Becoming a brother of Alpha Phi Omega allowed her to work on her public speaking skills and socialization. I too struggle with this, thus I was becoming more and more intrigued.
Amy talked about how she’s always wanted to do volunteer work and APO gave her the opportunity to do so. She ended up volunteering over 30 hours this past year and even wanted to do more! I’ve done volunteer services while I was in High School for clubs, but not to a deep extent. I think it would be nice to give back to communities in NYC that already do so much. In addition, I feel volunteering will make me feel grateful for what I have and not complain so much on the things I don’t have.
Furthermore, Amy expressed how she basically made a new family through Alpha Phi Omega and has a whole new group of friends. I’m
always open to meeting new people
and making more friends is always a plus. Especially if they’re going to be close ones! Who doesn’t want more friends?
Overall, I enjoyed my experience at the APO GIM. I think I’m going to continue going through the recruitment process and see what happens!
