Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DWA

Majors & Minors Fair

On November 9th, I attended the Majors and Minors fair which took place in the multipurpose room in Vertical Campus. Upon entering, we were given various handouts providing us with information about the majors offered in the three different schools along with a short survey for feedback that we would hand in once exiting the room. Tables were set up and a representative from each department/major had their own flyers that entailed a description of the major, the courses offered, and the amount of credits one must acquire for the degree. Although the information for each major can be found online at Baruch’s website, what made the fair edifying was having the ability to speak with someone and ask specific questions. As a finance major, I had the opportunity to inquire about the different paths I can take career-wise upon graduating as well as what to expect. Additionally, I was told which minors could assist me in acquiring future employment. Overall, it was beneficial and I was able to learn about new minors I would’ve never known existed.

Academic: Museum of Arts & Design

On Thursday, I decided to take advantage of my five hour break and visit the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). There were a total of six floors with two exhibits on each floor. Throughout the museum, I was able to see the interpretation of objects in regards to  contemporary and historical innovation in art. Although the majority of the exhibits were interactive, my favorite one by far was the Sonic Arcade: Shaping Space with Sound. Within the exhibit, what captivated me the most was the Polyphonic Playground. Earlier in the year I had watched an interview from the creators in which they explained their motive for such an innovative creation. The Polyphonic Playground is an adult-sized playground built with the Touch Board and Electric Paint that allows one to physically interact with the interdependency of sound and materials. Being able to see it and associate it with my music history class was definitely the highlight of my experience at the museum. Overall, I had an enjoyable time and look forward on returning in the future.

Latinx Opening Ceremony

On September 7th, during block hours, the Association of LatinoProfessionals for America, Dominican Students Association, Ecuadorian Club, and Latin American Student Organization all came together to commemorate the beginning of Latinx Heritage Month. The lobby on the second floor of the Vertical Campus was swarming with students of all cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Food, music, and even a photo booth was provided by the aforementioned clubs. Members from each club interacted with the students; giving in-depth explanations about the clubs and their activities; engaging in conversations about our culture; and dancing with the students to different genres of Hispanic music. Overall, the enthusiasm and welcoming demeanor of each of the clubs left me wanting to potentially join one.
