For my third and final blog post I visited the Starr Career Development Center and had a meeting with Michael Kalish who was recommended to me by Erin. I went is to mostly clarify a lot of doubts I had regarding some majors, writing a resume and internship in general. As I am still undecided about what I want to major in (but know I want something in the business area), I first asked several questions regarding the what jobs and internships the various majors lead to. Michael was extremely helpful showing me several resources in the Baruch website that have detailed information about this. Furthermore I also asked some more specific questions such as the difference between economics at Weissman vs economics and Zicklin. And although some of these questions were more suited to someone at academic advisement I still got a good answers and was pointed to other resources I could use to find this information he did not know. During the session I also asked some questions about internships and how to build a resume (which I have never done before). Once again I was pointed to the Starr website and got a quick rundown of everything I need to do and how to use it. I also asked some more specific questions such as when he would recommend for students to begin internships to which Michael was very helpful too. I was shown a resource on the Baruch website that displayed how to begin building a resume and what the most important elements are when it comes to finding good internships. In addition it was also recommended to be to take the focus 2 quiz as it was mentioned that a lot of students find it helpful. Although time was short (only 30 minutes), I found this session very informative and overall amazing. Michael was very friendly and helped explain a lot of the websites and resources that I otherwise would have likely been overwhelmed by if looking through alone.

Queens Botanical Garden
For my academic blog post, this week I decided to find an institution that was either discounted or free to visit with a CUNY id. After considering all the options online my I decided to visit the queens botanical garden with my family, a gorgeous place filled with nature. Previously I had visited another botanical garden within the city (near the bronx) and because we had liked it so much we thought seeing another one would be nice and would be an opportunity to do something together as a family. Seeing all the plants was and the multiple garden they offered was truly amazing as well as the way buildings and technology were integrated within the area which made it even nicer to explore. While I was there it was a pleasure to see the huge diversity in plants that they had throughout the compound and range of activities and events they host every year. We were introduced to several events they host throughout the year, one being very soon that I was considering attending, such as the harvest fest and pumpkin patch where the whole family can partake in enjoying live music, bounce houses, petting zoo, face painting, tours, composting demonstrations, craft and food vendors, beer & wine tent, the ever-popular Pumpkin Patch, and more. Furthermore I also found out the garden can also be used for various events such as weddings etc. The botanical garden was split up into more than 20 small gardens/sections all dedicated to a specific type of plant or theme. Although I didn’t get to see all of them due to time constraints my personal favorite were pinetum and the magnolia walk. Overall I found this visit very enjoyable and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys seeing nature and/or plants in a beautiful environment. It is also something that is great to return to at different points in the year because of the events they have and the seasonal effects on the garden, each one with its own beauty.
Baruch E-Sports Association
When trying to find a club that interested me, I initially looked through the long list online until I saw the Baruch E-Sports Association. Because games have been a hobby of mine for a king time now I decided I would attend one of their GIM to see how the club worked, meet new people and of course get some refreshments/food. In the first meeting I found all the present members to be very friendly, I was quickly introduced to what type of events the club has and managed to meet many new people, several of which had similar interests making it easier to talk too. Throughout the year the club hosts many gaming events both on campus, and because they have their own computer room these events can be organized more efficiently. However I also learnt the club is also meant to be in many ways, a way to socialize with people of similar interests, as they described it “we host a variety of events from in-house tournaments to social events on- and off-campus”. Another element of the club I found interesting was the team aspect. Currently they sponsor two competitive collegiate games; League of Legends and CS:GO. This was greats news to me because League of legends has been a hobby for a while and perhaps it could be a new experience to play in an amateur team. After the meeting I also visited (on another day), the recently opened computer lab that allows the members of the club to partake in on campus event and gives them the chance to play on good computers in an environment surrounded by fellow club members. Overall I found the club well organized and is something I look forward to joining this semester.
