Starr Career Center Resume Review Session

I figured I should start to utilize all of the resources that Baruch has to offer to its students. To start off with that journey, I paid a visit to the Starr Career Center Resume Review service offered on the second floor in the Starr office. It was quite easy and took no prior appointment-making, though you can make an appointment if you’d like. We simply had to walk in, input our emplid ID number into an iPad and wait for our name to be called. In my hand, I had my printed resume that was outdated because I had made it during my sophomore year of high school and haven’t looked at it since. My name was called and I was placed with a young man named Aliou who thoroughly went through my resume clearly, writing down all the changes I should make and explaining clearly what employers look for when they look at my resume. He asked me multiple questions regarding my experiences and helped me to seem more approachable when applying to jobs and internships in the future. At the end of the experience, he provided me with an rather thick and useful packet of information that I would need to aid me in rewriting my resume and that I will utilize for years to come.

I also expressed to Aliou that I am unsure of what major I am heading toward and was degree I am going to pursue and he kindly directed me toward the set of people at the career center who would aid me on figuring out just that. He provided me with information for an online survey I could take that would help me to figure out what my interests are and what I should do in the future.

Aliou recommended that I return to the resume review center after I rewrite my resume to review it for perfection which I am considering doing because the experience was quite enjoyable (and also free!)

Overall, I had a great experience at the Starr Resume Review center and I would highly encourage anyone to pay a visit to them whenever they have some free time. It can’t hurt, it only helps!

I appreciate this assignment because without it, I wouldn’t have made the effort to get my resume reviewed and now I feel eligible to apply for some new jobs!

Club Fair!- Rafeena Muntaz

On September 28th, I wandered around campus and found myself at in the gymnasium at one of the school’s club fairs. The first thing I heard was the loud mainstream music pouring out of a the gym and so many kids walking in and out. I was surprised at how many kids were in the gymnasium seeking a club, especially freshman. I was greeted by one of my one time friends and we wandered around the gym together and encouraged each other to sign up for as many clubs, as we usually shy away from social things and tend to miss out on many great opportunities. We walked around and conversed with many upperclassmen about what their clubs were about and what it could potentially offer us. There was a club there to suit everyone’s interests and I’m pretty sure the clubs in the gym at the moment weren’t even half of the clubs offered by Baruch College. I took particular interest in the UNICEF Club because since I was younger, I took a particular interest in helping the less fortunate and have a soft spot in my heart for kids my age who aren’t fortunate enough to have the same opportunities as others. I even wanted to join the teen peace corps when I was younger but never actually followed through with it, so I took this opportunity and signed up but unfortunately never heard a response. I was also interested in a group who was said to have taken mission trip all around the world to help those in need, but was quickly turned off by the price you wold have to pay if admitted into the group, $800. I was persuaded to sign up for the Golden Key group through one of their members and although I did receive a newsletter via e-mail from them, I never actually followed through with the group. Many other clubs were there, and Baruch offers a club for almost every race at Baruch. If there isn’t one, you can certainly make one!

I encourage everyone to go to a club fair and explore the opportunities that Baruch offers because you never know where it can take you!

Visiting the MET!

I’ve finally revisited the Metropolitan Museum of Art with some friends on Wednesday. It was an enlightening experience to see all of the artwork and artifacts they had beautifully displayed between the three levels of the museum. I’ve obtained a brief history of everything I saw, including things from places like Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. It is quite an interesting place to visit, better than the AMoNH in my opinion. It gave me and my friends time to explore the city and become familiar with our surroundings. We haven’t visited the museum since middle school so it was great to reminisce about our past experiences.

Making the trek to the museum wasn’t exactly in my book of “To-do’s” but I’m glad I pushed myself to do something adventurous and out of my comfort zone. I do have an interest in joining clubs here at Baruch and it makes me wonder how many things I can actually accomplish if I give myself the push I need to explore different things.  It was also a nice addition that we were allowed free entry because of our Baruch student ID’s and it makes me want to take advantage of other free things offered to me as a CUNY student. Before attending a city college, I was unaware of all the perks and opportunities I had at my finger tips and this particular assignment opened my eyes to more potential.

On a side note, as I got older my love for photography grew and I know that this is a great place to shoot some cool pictures of my friends and I among the artwork. If given an assignment, I know now that I can definitely take a trip to one of the many museums in NYC to do some hands on research and takes some cool pictures!

Whenever you have free time, take the 6 train down to 86th street and thank me later!
