LinkedIn Workshop

Earlier this this month went to a networking informational event hosted by clubs such as ‘Chit-Chat’. I found about this event through a friend who thought I would enjoy it.It took me a while before deciding to go because I didn’t think I would need it.The event focused on utilizing your LinkedIn profile in the possible manner so that you can land an internship.I assumed I already knew what I needed to know but I was terribly wrong . A LinkedIn professional discussed the effective methods he has learned throughout his career. In fact, his career revolves around LinkedIn and it involves helping others build an attractive LinkedIn profile. From the things I learned that day, I can see why his business was booming. This guy knew his stuff.I learned things  such as learning to contact Baruch Alumni and also knowing which position to target. Methods and ideas which seem simple enough but for some obscure reason I never really thought of doing that. The presenter also discussed the importance of follow up. There’s no point in getting a key contact if you don’t strive to build a connection as soon as possible.Earlier in the year I also experienced this fault . I would gain people’s contact info but never followed. It became so apparent that said contact would end up letting me know that I should have followed up.Of course I take full responsibility for my lack of foresight and  my novelty isn’t a valid excuse.Little factors like this can either compound into great success or a limiting factor for individuals. From this event I learned so much and truly regret not going to every business event during the school year.It really honed my awareness of things I should  be working on.I encourage each and every freshman to be more aware of the great opportunities which Baruch provides them.

Blog Post 2 Academic Museum

On Wednesday, a friend suggested we go to a museum. This was after sociology class. A class which I struggle to stay awake in.Not because the class itself is boring. It’s just not as engaging as other classes since we’re often time just watching videos and taking lecture notes. In fact, I actually enjoy the topics discussed in the class. For instance, we analyze the system emplaced in favor of the rich and against the poor. It’s a grim fact but it’s our reality whether we decide to believe it or not.Others might wonder why to even bother trying if the system is already against us. That’s the point, you should utilize all your resources and opportunities to move up your social class because not everyone can.Simply disrupting status quo and fighting against the system is motivating to me.

Back to our journey to the museum.I gathered some friends and we left school heading towards the MET. Luckily for us, the nearby 6 train goes straight there.A train ride full of pure jokes making time pass by quickly. We suddenly find ourselves in the museum as if we teleported. Interestingly enough as students were offered free tickets yet still had to pay donation . I suggested only donating 10 cents but my boys came through with a dollar. Like any other new yorker, I’ve already been to the MET. Though it’s been a long time since I’ve been to the museum and thus I couldn’t remember much. Me and the boys took a picture against a “Fragmentary colossal marble head of youth”. It’s from 2nd century B.C. Greek during the Hellenistic period. A term which I recognize from my time in art history during freshman year of high-school. All in all this trip to the museum was enlightening and more fun than I thought it would be.

Beta Alpha Psi!

While walking up the main escalators on Tuesday I saw a stand occupied by Beta Alpha Psi.Darius invited us to join him and gave us a short presentation on what Beta Alpha Psi was all about. He talked about its prestige as both a business fraternity and honors society. Already I was interested and was even more so when he stated how it was mainly focused on accounting, finance, and CIS majors. He gave us an ad for the next general interest meeting on Thursday which I also attended. When I got there with my friends we saw that it was already packed and luckily still found seats. Also, the fraternity office members were all adorned in professional attire which radiated an aura of authority and professionalism. Darius first introduced himself as the Rush Vice President and gave us a quick introduction about the frat. By joining the fraternity we would have access to a vast range of resources such as alumni in major companies. This tied into the theme of brotherhood which the fraternity promoted. They talked about how Beta Alpha Psi would increase our chances to get the internship that we want and which would possibly lead to a guaranteed job opportunity. I found the session really enlightenment and made have something else to work towards. This is because the fraternity requires a gpa 3.5 and above to join. So this is extra incentive to actually study for my classes and do well on my exams. I see this frat as a great opportunity to improve myself and become more of professional. I personally met with the President ,Eric, who told me about his experience at Baruch initially where he would go straight home until one day his sister told him to join Beta Alpha Psi. It was a life changing experience and transformed him into the person he is today. This most of all motivated me to join the club because I too want to become greater than I am today.
