Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC05

Monologue – STRESS

STRESS! Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. I am encountering stress and so are many others. It’s taking a toll in my life. Trying to manage schoolwork, work, family, healthy lifestyle, and just trying to find yourself in the right group of friends. Also realizing that my enrollment date is the latest. That adds more stress to my shoulders. I do not want classes that are leftover from other people. Communication class is stressful too. Especially since we have to memorize 72 vocabulary words and the midterm is tomorrow. Keeping that straight A seems possible from what others say. But it’s not happening for me.

Blog Post #3 – @Career Workshops

This semester is coming to an end, and I’m starting to reminisce all the career related events I went to. I can definitely say that I went to a lot of events where alumni’s or professionals came in to Baruch to talk about their experiences. There were a lot of mentor ship events where people got to review your resumes. I specifically went to 2 of those kind, and I realized there’s always something new to add or change on your resume. It’s a constant update where you can always make it better.

For events with a few panelists, I went to a JP. Morgan meeting where they talked about their summer internships they offer and what’s it’s like in the corporate field. Also I went to a event where Grant Thornton came to talk about mid-sized accounting firms and their duties. I learned the difference about the big four accounting firms and midsize firms. They’re both so cool so I would love to work for either firms. Not only did I explore accounting workshops, I tried to dip my feet in marketing related events too. For example, I went to an AKPsi meeting where panelists from marketing fields talked about there experience and the different fields within marketing. Another event I went to was an office tour to Publicis Health. Honestly, that was the coolest event ever. The building was near Baruch and the workers there were so chill and dressed however they loved to. The office felt like a home with a kitchen, TV, and everyone knows each other on freindly terms. The main questions I realized everyone talks about is : What’s your day to day like, How did you end up in your position, What makes your position right now different from your other experiences. Overall, I really liked going to events not only for the free food but also for the experience and knowledge that I can learn from it.

Blog Post #2 – @Legacy Leadership Program

I recently applied to this program called legacy leadership program from ascend and I got accepted. This program is a 10 week professional committee that helps you develop professional skills. They start off by helping you with developing your resume, cover letters, stock pitch and etc. They also provide student mentors that will help you throughout and you can stay in touch with them after the program. This can really help me transition into college because I can ask my mentors for help whenever I need them. I had my first meeting last Friday and I realized how competitive and professional Baruch can be. Everyone is dressed up so well and the mentors seem to have this leadership role. After I complete this 10 week program, I would want to give back too by being a mentor to others who needs guidance. It was cool to hear stories of how this program affected a lot of mentees. It was not cool how half the mentors couldn’t show up to the first meeting because they had other meetings. I actually found out more about accounting since there were mentors there that worked in the accounting field. I feel like this program won’t be a waste of time since its professional development, which I really want to learn. It can possibly build up my resume and help me develop personally. My experience was great. We had a meet and greet with all the mentors that showed up for about 5 minute each. After the meet and greet, we got to chose the top three mentors we want. And then after they’ll mix and match for us. After the meet and greet with the mentors, we went to have dinners together to know everyone on a more personal side and talk about anything. I am very excited that I have applied and gotten accepted to this program because it’s the first steps that can help me transition into college. This program is opened to any year and every semester for those who is interested.

Blog Post #1 – @UCLA

On August 31, 2017 I attended the first General Interest Meetings for United Chinese Language Association. It seemed to be a start of college life. I met some interesting people part of the committee board and executive board. When I approached the meeting, the hallway was packed with so much people, and I thought how are we going to fit in the room? As I got in the room it was so full, some people were waiting outside. It was not exciting to realize that I had to stand because there were no more seats. However, the vibe in there felt like unity. Most of the members were lively, outgoing, and inviting. I had a great time, we played games for the first 1 hour or so and then we got free food! As I was lining up for food, I met this girl named Qi Qi, and she told me if I’m planning to major in accounting, I should have a open selection of majors because it’s very hard to maintain a A in accounting. I realized that I have to try really hard to succeed because the people at Baruch seems pretty competitive. The first meeting felt like a success and I learned so much about them so I decided to go again.

On September 7, I went to their second General Interest Meeting. I got to know more about the events that they’re going to hold. Also I met more people, which is great for networking! We played Google feud and pictionary which was better than the first event. This event was better than the first because there was less people and I got a seat. But there were still some people sitting on the floor. However, a not so cool thing is how there were also a lot less food. They mentioned about an event they’re going to have on September 12th which is a Chinese Learning Program and they’re going to be making lanterns while having food. This event sparked my interest, however, I have first year seminar class so I can’t attend, sadly. One big event which is coming up is the Moon Festival and then the Lunar New Year show. I really like how they embrace the Chinese culture because growing up I liked being an Asian american. I’m curious as to how the Lunar new year show will be like and very excited for all the upcoming events in this club like the socials.

For this semester, I plan on joining as much events as possible and hopefully one year I can apply for an executive or committee position. Being a leader in the club will look better on my resume, as I was told. I hope I can learn more how to prepare for real life situations from the mentorship program that they have. Possibly I can find an accounting internship from networks in this club. It didn’t feel like a waste of time to attend the meetings, well for me at least. Other people just left the meetings in the middle of the session. Is that rude or is it normal? Well, overall I had a great time so far at this club. Hope to gain more experiences with the whole UCLA club.
