Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC05

Blog Post #3

After spending all weekend watching youtube tutorials and trying to do practice questions, I knew I wouldn’t be able to understand the calculus material fully on my own. Because I knew I wouldn’t be able to get a good score on the test, I resorted to tutoring. Last month, I stopped by the SAAC Tutoring Center to get help. When I came in, the nice lady behind the desk gave me information on how to schedule an appointment and I quickly made an account on WCO and proceeded to signing up for an hour tutoring session the following day.

Came Monday, October 16 at 5pm, and I found myself at the SAAC center with my notebook full of notes and laptop already logged into web assign. I had signed up with a guy named Reyhan, so I went inside and looked for his name tag. At first, I didn’t really know how the whole tutoring thing worked at Baruch but then as time went on, I got comfortable with it. We did many practice questions and Reyhan explained every step really well. The hour went by pretty fast and before I knew it, the session was over and I had finally understood every topic on my calculus test the next day.

The SAAC Tutoring Center is a very useful resource for students at Baruch.  I now find myself there before every calculus quiz and test that I have and I’m very thankful for the help and will continue to go there whenever needed.

Monologue

Two long months of college

Eight weeks of feeling stuck

Although Ive gained new knowledge

I’ve never had this much bad luck

On my very first day here,

I thought it would be lit.

But my days began to disappear

Study, work, sleep, and submit.

Everyday at 2 o’clock

A text from my friends I would get

“Meet us at the block

In the plaza, try not to forget!”

Standing around in a circle became really boring,

It wasn’t any fun until we started exploring

First floor was a bummer, second floor nothing,

But then music from the third floor had all my friends bumping.

Off the escalator and into the hallway we went,

Entering an orange room filled with students that spent

Most of their mornings and afternoons playing pool,

Finally creating a good reason to come to school.

At first it was awkward showing up there everyday,

But then we grew closer and had a reason to stay.

My squad of 10 had entered the world

Of the game room being the reason we twirled.

Everyday at 2 o’clock

A text from my friends I would get

“Meet us in the game room,

Try not to forget!”

A week ago, my friend and I joined Hillel and were taken out to a coffee “date” by one of the mentors. We went to Starbucks across the street from Baruch during club hours for about 30-40 minutes. The mentor, Goldie, told us about lots of different opportunities and events offered by Hillel and Baruch in general. She even told us about her art club, since she is the president. Goldie gave us details about the different scholarships offered and programs/trips that they do. In addition, she gave us the links to the Facebook pages of some of the clubs so we can follow what events are happening and when.

On top of giving us a vast amount of useful information, Goldie took the time to talk to us about adjusting to Baruch as first year students. We talked about our professors, our classes, our homework, time management, and the social aspect of our first (almost) 2 months here. I had a really great time talking to such a sweet and caring woman. Hillel is a very tight knit community with lots of available opportunities and I will continue attending Hillel events (and other Baruch events, of course) to the best of my ability!

ALPFA @ Baruch

Hey everyone! Last Thursday, I attended an ALPFA meeting, well workshop. It was one of their many workshops about career development and resume building. This first workshop’s main focus was resume building and how to stand out in a pool of applicants when applying to any job. At first, we just talked about the building blocks of any resume because as one of the workshop mentors, and probably lots of other people, said “A well written resume goes a long way.” Then, we discussed how to improve an existing resume and what skills should be added and which shouldn’t. After the resume portion, we moved on to discussing leadership and networking, two very important things in college and in life.

I thought this workshop was very interesting and am glad I attended it because it was beneficial and educational. Throughout my high school years, I’ve worked in many places and been a part of many programs and all I would do is ignorantly cram them all into my resume but now I know better than just throwing different things on there. I think ALPFA is going to be a great tool in building my career throughout my college years and in the future. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank.
