Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC09

Club Fair

I attended the Baruch Fall 2017 Club Fair on Thursday, September 14th with Faria Arni. We decided to go to the Club Fair because we felt like we should get more involved on campus. Since we have an almost three hour break on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between our Philosophy and Pre Calculus class, we figured we should be productive during this time and not waste it. We went to the Club Fair to find out what exactly Baruch’s Student Life has to offer, so that we could hopefully find something that would interest us.

Faria wanted to find a club relating to law, because she would like to be an immigration lawyer one day. I wanted to find a club relating to music, because I want to work at a record label one day. First, we did a quick run through of all the club tables at the Club Fair in the gym. Honestly, we were originally looking for which club was giving out food at their table. Free food is always our first priority. No one really had good food, only candy and stuff like that. After that, we began to actually look for a law club for Faria, and a music club for me.

Faria knew that Baruch had a Mock Trial Club, so we stopped by that table to learn more about it. She got a flyer, and signed up for their mailing list. I knew that Baruch had a New York Music Industry Association Club, because I had already went to a General Interest Meeting. We stopped by their table so that I could ask about joining their Marketing Committee. I exchanged numbers with their Marketing Vice President, and now I help out the committee by posting flyers for their events. I’m glad Faria and I went, because we ended up signing up for clubs that interest us.

The MET Museum Trip

So on Friday, October 13th, my History teacher, Anna Boozer, took our class to the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art. We went to see the Ancient Egyptian Exhibit, because we were currently studying ancient Egyptian civilization at that time. We saw a lot of interesting things. There were a lot of well preserved artifacts that were beautifully detailed. We had to be there at three fifteen in the afternoon, and I got there early because I knew I was probably going to get lost. I was right, I got pretty lost. I was wandering around the museum for like thirty minutes, with no ticket and no one stopped me. Honestly, that is pretty bad security, how unsafe to be honest.  I only got a ticket once I went up to some lady and was like “am I supposed to have a ticket?” and she was like, “No one gave you a ticket yet?!” That was when she finally gave me a ticket. Then, I got lost a little more until I found a security guard. The security guard was nice enough    to show me the way to the group meet up section where I was supposed to meet my teacher. I asked about her at the desk and they told me that she was going to be late because she had a tour right before our tour. I found this girl Jasmine from class and I chilled with her until everyone else showed up. Then, we finally went to the Egyptian exhibit. We saw artifacts from tombs and different statues. One thing that stands out the most to me was the offering bearer statue (attached is the picture of it). It was put in tombs of high class citizens to protect and guide them in the afterlife. It was believed to give them spiritual food and other necessities for eternity.

New Student Loft Party

On Thursday, August 31st, my friends and I were all debating whether or not going to the New Student Loft Party was actually worth it. We knew that we had to go to an event for this blog post, but we all really wanted to just go home. We were eventually sold because we heard there was going to be free food, and we are always down for free food. Faria, Sadia, and I all have Pre Calculus together on Thursday afternoons, so we just left together afterwards. The class ended at four thirty five, so we had a little bit of time to kill until the New Student Loft Party at six o’clock. We decided to go to the library, at the sixth floor computer labs, to do some homework together until it was time to leave at around five forty five.

After we left the sixth floor of the library, we met up with my friend, Josslyn, and Michelle and her friend, Sarah, outside the Newman Vertical Campus Building to wait on line to enter the Multi Purpose Room. The line led us to a bunch of food set up in the hallway. We each got a cute little slider burger with some fries, dipping sauce, and some soda. We took our food into the Multi Purpose Room, and walked around aimlessly to try to find some space at a table. We eventually squeezed our way into a very small and crowded table to stand and eat our food. The burger was kind of cold, but still it was free food, so I was not complaining.

We looked around us to see that there were a lot of games set up, such as giant Jenga, giant checkers, giant chess, and giant Connect Four. There was a DJ playing old, but still good, music. There were cute fairy lights around the entire room, which you can see above us in the selfie attached. I remembered the room from Freshmen Orientation and a Campus Tour I went on, when there were a lot of tables set up, explaining Baruch’s many programs. However, the room was not nearly as crowded those two times as it was for this New Student Loft Party.

I did not think that many people were going to show up, but the entire room was packed. We were able to meet a lot of people, and make a lot of new friends. We learned that a lot of people were also there just for the sake of free food and to take a selfie for this blog post. Our selfie was taken right before I left. In the selfie, from left to right, is Josslyn, me, Michelle, Sadia, Sarah, and Faria. The selfie is really bad quality, but at least you can kind of see the cute lights they put up in the background above us.

Although I could not stay the entire time, I was still glad that we ended up deciding to go. Not only did I get to eat some free food, but I got to meet some new people as well.
