Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC12

VARK Questionnaire

I completed the online questionnaire and my results told me that I had a slight kinesthetic preference in learning. To take in information I️ prefer to: use all my senses, field tours, examples of principles, lecturers who give real-life examples, applications, hands-on approaches (computing), and trial and error. Things I️ should be mindful of when studying: my lecture notes may be poor because the topics were not ‘concrete’ or ‘relevant’., I will remember the “real” things that happened, I️ should put plenty of examples into my summary, use case studies and applications to help with principles and abstract concepts, talk about my notes with another “K” person, and use pictures and photographs that illustrate an idea. To preform well on exams I️ should write practice answers, paragraph and play out the exam situation.

MET

I went on the Fashion in Art tour in the Metropolitan Museum of Art which was about an hour long. I found the tour very interesting as it was designed to explain the depths of both modern fashion and fashion dating back as early as the sixth century B.C. The tour went on to explain both the mindset behind the fashion of the time period and the technicality behind actually making it. The tour underscored both, the largest trends of certain time periods and the most divine costumes of each time period. I found it incredibly interesting that in wanting to creating a unique image for themselves many designers of earlier centuries began to introduce unconventional ideas in their designs, including using materials as abstract as wood and stone to create their outfits. I was able to meet many people at this tour who all had a common thread of interest in fashion, two of the attendees were siblings completing their freshman year of college as well.

Beta Alpha Psi

Last Thursday, September 7th, a group of friends and I met outside Baruch during the club hours and attempted to decide which club GIM we should attend. After considering multiple clubs such as UNICEF, BAP, and USG, we decided to attend the Beta Alpha Psi GIM because we were all interested in what the club had to offer. At the club we were greeted with complimentary pizza and refreshments (always a nice touch) and then proceeded to sit and watch a video about what the club had to offer. Although the video provided newcomers with information on what the club does on a regular basis, I found the speakers much more informative and compelling. Max, one of the Rush members, went on to tell us about the three main sectors of the business honors fraternity: brotherhood, community service, and professionalism.

In terms of brotherhood the speakers expanded on the idea that joining the club would give us the opportunity to create tight bonds and make life long friends with all the current and future members of the club. Community Service was introduced from a very grateful point of view, all the members wanted to show that they were thankful for the opportunities that they were presented with by giving back and making an impact on their community. Lastly, the members spoke of professionalism, perhaps their largest sector. All 20 members in the room continued to tell us about their individual experiences in terms of BAP helping them find internships and then prepare them for it. Additionally the members conveyed to us the importance of networking in the business world and how many doors BAP can open for us in that particular field.

I think that BAP has a great deal to offer to students perusing majors in the business, accounting, and CIS felid, however, I personally think that I would be able to take more out of the club if I were to join either next semester or the first semester of my sophomore year.
