Career Workshop

There are many jobs that I could approach with a Finance degree but without any experience, it would be very unlikely I would get the job in this competitive market. I went to apply to a financial Internship and jobs, which I started with cold calling and emailing. For any job, you need to have experience on the field and a higher education than the next from a college. For the first while, no one answered my emails, but then after a while, one answered yes they would take me on, provided I do a short interview. I agreed to an interview.

The job that I want to work at is Investment Banking for the things I could learn that will help me in the future. In the future, after investment banking, I want to open up my own hedge fund, just like everyone else in Baruch College, so I need absorb any and every information I could get my hands on! The interview went smoothly and hopefully will be starting my internship for the winter.

Monologue

July 20, 2006, is the day my world flipped upside down. It was the day I immigrated to the United States of America. Half of my life I lived in Uzbekistan. The night before my family and I immigrated, I remember family and friends at my house in Uzbekistan tearing up, saying their goodbyes and helping us pack. My parents did not sleep that night. My mother left her parents, friends, everything she cherished. My father left his mother, his brother, his sisters, his business just to take a chance on me and my brother. They left everything and took a chance on us. Disappointing them, so far, is probably my greatest fear. So, I must live boldly. I must constantly push myself and I must never settle.

In Class Writing Center Workshop

The writing center workshop with Joey during our Anthropology class was very convenient. I was able to get an idea on how to format and put together the essay I have due this week in Anthropology. I thought I had everything figured out about writing essays, but Joey proved me wrong.
He showed us how to plan the paper before writing the essay and how the thesis sentence was supposed to be and where it’s supposed to be. On that account, I am very glad we had the workshop in class for it gave me reasons to go to the writing center in the future.

Baruch Investment Management Group

In a rush to the Baruch Traders Club, I came in to the Trading floor on time for the meeting. But on time was too late – people were hovering over each other to see the presentation, seats were swarmed by students, students were on top of each other. It was a mess.

At the Traders floors, looking for someone familiar. I noticed that the Baruch Traders Club meeting had already started next room, and I was at the wrong meeting. Investment Management Group was the club I was at, the room was full to the point where the representatives were starting to kick students out. Club member said anyone who didn’t have a seat had to leave the Traders floor. Hundreds of students looked concerned including me.

I stepped out with the rest of the students and saw that they were starting the presentations. “I ended up here for a reason,” I thought to myself. They told me I couldn’t come in, which increased my interest and I wasn’t going to let this opportunity slip. “No-one without a seat is allowed,” I heard the student say. I walked in to an office a few rooms down the Traders floor, and convinced the person sitting at the desk for a chair. I took the chair and walked straight in to the Traders floor, and pushed straight to the meeting. All the members who were at the club looked at me, I had broken the system.  The rest of the meeting, I listened to the students who were talking about Investment management. They told me there would be a training and that not everyone would get in.

Met a few students from the club who were impressed by what I did. They saw that I was ambitious and that nothing could stop me when I put my mind to it.

I applied and submitted my resume last week, we’ll see what happens.
