Over Coming the Odds

The Jets took a decisive victory against the Patriots last Sunday. Was it luck or is it just good playing? It was a very balanced match through out the game which drew it into overtime. In overtime the Jets clenched victory with a 42-yard field goal with just 5 minutes and 7 seconds left. The players were hesitant to celebrate when the reviewed the lead because on their last 5 encounters with the patriots it had ended in there in their defeat. The Patriots unable to score after lose and the Jets are jubilant over there narrow victory of 30-27.

What Does the Fox Say?

Fox

YouTube is the home to many strange videos and one of its most recent phenomenons has been “What Does the Fox Say?,” a music video by two Norwegian brothers, Bard and Vegard Ylvisaker.  In the article by Dave Itzkoff, we learn that the video was actually just a joke they were planning on using on their comedy show in Norway, “I Kveld Med Ylvis.” That is hard to believe (insert sarcasm here). The brothers have been invited to numerous shows across America and Europe due to the massive amount of fame they have acquired. They debuted at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot Singles chart and have accumulated millions of views on YouTube. However, the brothers do not seem to expect this fame to last long. According to them, they will soon join the long list of one-hit wonders, including Psy and others. They say they are prepared for their fame to dwindle and have just been enjoying their time in the limelight.

Vitamins vs. Vegetables

Cooking may be a passion for some people, but to others eating may be the best part of food. Nonetheless, different foods and different cooking methods can alter the nutritional benefits of one food versus another. This New York Times, Ask Well question examines the advantages of various vegetables, and which cooking methods result in the most health benefits. Several studies have determined that there is no superior way to prepare vegetables. The reason behind this discovery is that each vegetable and each vitamin is different in the way it is constructed.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/18/ask-well-does-boiling-or-baking-vegetables-destroy-their-vitamins/?ref=nutrition

This article revealed that nutrients such as Vitamins B and C have less benefits when they are cooked and processed. Additionally, Vitamin C is healthier when it is eaten frozen. One the other hand, vegetables that are full of Vitamins A, D, and other antioxidant compounds, are best prepared by cooking them. Studies have concluded that carrots, zucchini and broccoli offer the most nutrients if they are boiled. It is also known that frying these nutrients is the worst way of preparation.

However, one fact that was surprising was the advantages of microwaving foods. In 2007, a study showed that “steaming and boiling caused a 22 percent to 34 percent loss of vitamin C.” but “microwaved and pressure-cooked vegetables retained 90 percent of their vitamin C.”

People may think that one cooking process is better then another, but after doing some research the best way of “cooking” a product may be shocking.  Contrary to public opinion, raw vegetables and even microwaving foods may retain the most nutrients. So next time you find yourself preparing vegetables, stop and think of the best way to preserve some health benefits.

So class is over and you’re hungry! Wherefore art thou good food?! Check out Group 5’s top picks on eateries around Baruch!

Harindu: Food cravings should not be a problem to get to during your time at Baruch. What do you expect? It is New York City after-all. From the dollar slices, to the halal carts, to the fancy dine-in restaurants, you can find it all near Baruch. One of the favorites around Baruch seems to be Shake Shack. That is the original store of the many branches that can be found in New York City. Located in Madison Park, it is packed with people of all kinds during a warm summer day. The lines can be frustrating but once you have the food in your hand, there will be no regrets. They have a variety of burgers, hotdogs, and shakes. The Shroom burger is one of the most popular burgers. It is a Portobello mushroom burger perfected with cheese and other ingredients. Also get a side of cheese fries, you’ll enjoy it. The shakes are superb as one can assume from their name. So next time you have some free time to spend near Baruch College, remember to go down to Madison Park and grab something from Shake Shack.

Winnie: Café 28? More like Café 24/7! Located on right on the corner of  28th St. and 5th Ave., this gourmet deli welcomes you at any time of the day with a wide range of food. It is a bit far from Baruch by hey, exercise keeps the body healthy! Café 28 has a cold and hot buffet bar, sandwiches, wraps, coffee, burgers, sushi, fruit, pizza, salad, udon, paninis, fries, cigarettes, candy, gum, chips, dessert, etc.  The giant refrigerated section in the back contains many popular and unusual drinks but you could always get hot coffee and tea in the front. The cold and hot buffet bar charges by the weight. Containers are provided, so just head on to the back, grab and container and fill up what you like to eat! It charges by the weight, which can get pretty pricey, but the food is great! But then again, it is located in Flatiron, so don’t be surprised by the cost. A personal favorite is the goat cheese wrap! Goat cheese, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, with a cucumber herb vinaigrette lying in a spinach wrap is delish! Wildly flavorful but won’t overwhelm your palette! There is lots of seating available on the first floor and second floor, but during lunchtime, it does get a bit crowded so what people tend to do is head on over to Madison Square Park and enjoy a meal outside! If you’re ever stumped by the question of where to eat at the break of dawn, head on over to Café 28!

Dakelyn: If you are searching for good comfort food, I suggest you try the Dominican Deli on 2nd avenue between 25th and 26th street. The food is delicious and the service is great. The prices are cheap compared to other restaurants in the area. They serve different types of rice, beans, chicken, and pork. They always have a wide variety to choose from daily. You could get a $4 meal or a $6 meal, which is enough for two people to share. The meals do not include drinks, but you could get a drink right at the store. Out of every place I have gone to eat near Baruch, this deli is my favorite because it reminds me of home and it really gets rid of my hunger. I would definitely recommend anyone to go here.

Bridget: Need your morning fix of coffee? I know I do! But with those small breaks between classes, who has the time to stand on those colossal Starbucks lines. Not to mention having to pay triple price for a decent sized coffee. On a college student budget, drinking $5 coffee every morning, probably won’t have good results. But now there’s a solution- fair priced coffee that tastes good. Located on the corner of Lexington Ave and 23rd Street, Gramercy Star Café, is my go to place for my morning coffee. With a variety of flavors, such as hazelnut, French vanilla, decaf, cappuccino, espresso, tea and so much more, this café offers tasty coffee without forcing you to break the bank. Not only does Gramercy Star Café serve homemade breakfast foods, but it also features a salad bar, many sandwich choices, pasta, and even personalized pizza. Located within steps of the buildings, this café will satisfy anyone’s hunger needs. No more having to wait on never ending lines and paying for overpriced food. So next time you find your self with a time crunch and rumbling stomach, stop by, you won’t leave empty handed!

David: My favorite place to eat around Baruch is dollar pizza on Lexington between 22nd and 23rd street. I mean it may not be the best pizza but the value is unrivaled by any other. It is quick and quality and a good deal. My least favorite place to eat around Baruch is Jimmy’s House it is also quick and cheap but it is really greasy.

Immigration Reform in The United States

The United States doesn’t have the best immigration system so the House Democrats have been planning a new bill to improve the system. The Associated Press announces that House Democrats have proposed a bill that would allow a path for illegal immigrants to gain citizenship and tighten border security. Republicans have recently rejected this proposal. They felt that those who already went against the immigration system shouldn’t be granted with citizenship. Many people feel the same way that those who have already crossed the border illegally should not be granted citizenship. It would further pervert the immigration system despite its state already.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/03/us/new-immigration-bill-put-forward.html?_r=0

With the whole issue immigration reform still on the floor, on October 5, 2010, many supporters of the proposal showed their support by showing up to a demonstration they named “National Day of Immigrant Dignity and Respect.” As Julia Preston wrote and witnessed that when over 50,000 supporters marched to Capitol Hill, they were met with the government shutdown. The number of supporters doesn’t stop there. Nationwide, there have been demonstrations where people have advocated for the passage for the House Democrats’ plan. With many rallying all over the United States, surely there will be some radical change.

On October 8, 2010, Julia Preston also describes how 8 members of the House of Representatives were arrested in a demonstration for the passage of a bill that granted illegal immigrants citizenship. They stood in the middle of the street on the side of the Capitol lawn, which blocked traffic. Other protestors were also arrested after sitting in linked arms on the street.

The Republicans have also criticized those who’ve rallied in the National Mall in Washington D.C. Since the government shutdown is in effect, the National Mall is closed and no one should’ve been able to get inside. Although the Republicans strongly oppose the bill, they did try to keep parks and monuments open, despite the government shutdown.

With other issues that have more priority, who knows when will the immigration system be fixed? The issue of immigration definitely is a touchy topic. Many of those who argue for providing illegal immigrants with citizenship are those who are illegal themselves or those who have relatives that are illegal. But will the United States really just grant citizenship to those who have already broke the law? Many of those who argue against it find the proposal unfair. Many of immigrants wait to get approved from the United States and then immigrate here. It will change the minds of everyone. Those who’ve waited and followed the guidelines to become a citizen may feel like they’ve wasted their time. And in the future, many people might just sneak into the U.S. and just apply for citizenship. Immigration then also leads into other major topics, like healthcare/insurance, taxes, etc.

Immigration is such a controversial topic. With fiscal policy and other budget problems as well as dealing with international business, who knows when will a new immigration policy be implemented? Since the government shutdown is over, immigration reform now moves up a spot in the government’s “to-do” list.

“By 2047, Coldest Years May Be Warmer Than Hottest in Past, Scientists Say”

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/10/science/earth/by-2047-coldest-years-will-be-warmer-than-hottest-in-past.html?ref=science&_r=1&

The time will soon come, where winter as we know
does not exist. The article from the New York Times entitled “By 2047, Coldest
Years May Be Warmer Than Hottest in Past, Scientists Say,” by Justin Gillis
brings to mind the dangers that the weather can cause in the future. Dr. Mora
and his graduate students’ analysis of forecasts around the world have allowed
them to conclude that we can expect much warmer weather in the very near future.
Based on their research, they were able to predict that by 2047 the coldest day
of the year will be warmer than any temperature recorded 1860 to 2005. We
notice the change in temperature from year to year but fail to see the
importance of it. We experienced summer like weather in the first week of
October. Many people enjoyed this and the spirit of summer was back for that
week. That is not October weather we are used to but we should start to expect
that more and more. This is something we should take seriously. We can slow
down this warming that’s so apparent by lowering the use of emissions. This
will give us about 20 to 25 years more to prepare for it and find other
solutions to this problem. So remember to do what you can to help lower
emissions now before it’s too late.
