Freshman Seminar Spring 2017 DTD

Last Tuesday I went to the Computer Informational Systems career week panel. At the panel there were 4 Baruch-alumni who were now in a successful position in the industry. The moderator, one of Baruch’s graduate lecturers, asked questions to the panelists and we got to listen to their insightful answers. We learned about their path to their career, how they figured out what they loved, and general tips about the school and programs that I’ll be taking. Afterwards the floor was opened for networking and I got the opportunity to talk to one of the panelists – a cyber-security researcher working at Ernst & Young. We socialized and I got his business card. I’ll be applying for an internship there this summer.

A couple days ago I got to go to the The Sidney Mishkin Gallery with a friend of mine. It was really interesting to see how many talented artists Baruch has. There were even a couple of the artists at the gallery itself whom I met and talked with about their piece. The gallery was open to the public so there were non-students there as well admiring the art. Attached are some pictures of the gallery as well as a close-up of my favorite piece there.

Last Thursday I went to the orientation for a club called Conversation Partners Program. It was the club that was explained to us in class where English speaking natives and non-natives get together and talk in order to help assimilate the non-native student both into the language and the culture of New York and the USA in general.

I’m a native speaker so I went so I could have the opportunity to help a foreign student learn to talk more comfortably and to make friends while I do it. In order to stay in the club you must meet with your partner 7 times over the course of the semester for an hour each. I haven’t yet met with my partner but I imagine the majority of the time will be dedicated to getting lunch and talking about our respective backgrounds. I’ll try to give helpful tips on how to speak more eloquently and how best to socialize and get around the city.
