During the post Civil War Reconstruction period, there were a number of white supremacist groups that used legal and non-legal ways to terrorize and limit the freedoms of black people. Even today some of these same tactics exist and are manifested as forms of police brutality. The Civil Rights movement fought against this structural notion that the dark complexion of an individuals skin is perceived to be a threat and those who bear this skin must be oppressed and #BlackLivesMatter is pushing towards fighting against the same notion, but now it has become increasingly aware and there is an approach for legal pushback.
