Great Works of Literature I, Spring 2020 – Online – One

How does Pizan advise her readers to change the way they read the work of male authors of the past?

Pizan advices her readers to change the way they read the work of male authors by exposing their lack of credibility & sexist views. Throughout the first part of The Book of The City of Ladies Pizan demonstrates the misogynistic views presented by male authors, and their lack of knowledge of important women throughout history (biblical, historical, & mythical figures). Pizan accuses male authors of agreeing to distribute the same lie about women and also making women feel bad about the form they were born in since according to male authors they were the vessels of sins. Pizan demonstrates how she disagrees with the negative and misogynistic attitudes towards women imposed by the male authors.

  1. I agree with your point of view on how the work of male authors shows their lack of credibility, sexist views, and inequality. Back then female authors are not well known as male authors. For that inequality, many females did not want to be an author. The reason is male authors write wrong information about women and treat women as an object. This is called general inequality. The writing industry is mostly dominated by males and male authors are famous for their negative and sexist attitudes toward females.

  2. In my opinion, back to the age of the book, all her works and point of view are extremely rare. Since only males got well education, the literature was mostly written by males from their point of view. People were naturally thinking of the negativity toward females. It was somehow not gender discrimination because people didn’t even realize the existence of gender discrimination. Her words are precious.
