Nightwood Blog 3

One section of the passage that I found difficult to understand was when we were given a description of Felix and where hes from. On the top of page 10 it states “for the step of the wandering Jew is in every son. No matter where and when you meet him you feel that he has come from some place–no matter from what place he has come–some country that he has devoured rather than resided in, some secret land that he has been nourished on but cannot inherit, for the Jew seems to be everywhere from nowhere.” I had difficulty translating this because I didn’t know if it was being stereotypical of  Jews.  We are told that Felix is  Jew and that all Jews wander or devour countries. Additionally if we keep reading on it states that a few people swear to have seen him in different countries simultaneously, which could also be a stereotype that all Jews look the same. The way I translated this passage, was that Jews heavily populate this specific region of the world where Felix is and have a similar look and character for example “knowing figures”, which people categorize them. No one knows exactly where their from or where they came from because they “wander” or “devour” lots of regions.

Blog Post 2 Ugestu and Bewitched

The story of the film “Ugestu” and short story “Bewitched” both enchant modern readers because of the use of realism and fantasy. Ueda states that generations of readers found the supernatural stories intriguing and that no writer has successfully used the mixture of fantasy and everyday life to create an interesting story. In the film “Ugestu”, two husbands get distracted from taking care of their wives. The women are depicted as lower than men. The man is the worker and has to support the family while the wife stays home to take care of the child. Woman are told to hide when soldiers come and are raped, along with being treated poorly. The wives opinions are constantly being ignored by the husbands and become the reality that the men have to deal with in the end. This has relevance to the world today, for example in some countries women are still being treated similarly to those of the film. It can also be related to woman feeling that they don’t have a input in politics because it is mostly influenced by men or that their opinions are not as valuable as men opinion.

In the short story “bewitched”, the reader is introduced to the character Toyo -o who is depicted as a problem for the father. He is a man that is irresponsible and could be deceived. He is similar to both men from the film “Ugestu”. These three male characters are desperate for something, whether its wealth or women, which ends bad for them because they were selfish. The two stories have similarities in referencing gender roles. Toyo-o is depicted as everything that a man should not be and is seen as a risk to the family. Toyo-o and the first husband in the movie were both lured in by a woman that tried to control them because of their character. In both stories women were not as highly valued as men, the women were the ones that ended up suffering the most because of the men actions.

Basho’s Prose and Poetry

Prose is the use of plain language and Poetry is the use of literary devices such as rhymes, metaphors, and personification in poems. The use of prose revolutionized Haiku to become more than simply another form of poetry as stated in “The world of Haiku”. Prose allows the writer to use plain language to become more descriptive in there writing. Prose gives the poets another tool for a more detailed narrative. Poetry uses literary elements to give the readers a better interpretation of the poets message. Poetry makes writing compelling and engaging so the reader craves to analyze the literary work. Poetry is a more descriptive and creative form of writing. These two forms allow the writer and reader to create images of the literary work. They are two different styles in prose being common language storytelling and poetry being storytelling through style such as comparisons and rhymes.

When Basho uses prose he is more detailed and describes the development of the narrative. He is more detailed in the explaining of the setting and surroundings throughout the journey. He constantly switches from prose to poetry after he has described the setting in prose, to show any activity of the scenery in poetry.
