The Ugliness Behind Jealousy

To what degree is this a play about jealousy? What does it have to tell us about jealousy?

Jealousy plays a major role in Shakespeare’s Othello, mainly shown amongst two major characters Iago and Othello. Othello is married to Dsdemmo in which it is portrayed as a marriage that is filled with true love but Iago’s mindful games is what brings Othello’s jealousy in to play and destroys everything he has. With jealousy, you see Iago’s true colors and the major influence that he had on Othello in a negative way. Jealousy brought out doubt, suspicion, anger and many other negative emotions through Othello. Jealousy showed how much it can easily take away all the positivity and turn something so beautiful into something ugly. This becomes a major theme throughout the entirety of the play and shows that jealousy can bring out the ugliest version of one self and potentially destroy what was once beautiful if not controlled.

Love Drives You Through Hell, Literally

What is the role of love in the Commedia?

Love is a strong word and sometimes love must be sought out through the stages of hell which is exactly what Dante went through, literally. Dante was in search of his lover, Beatrice and in hopes of finding her, he had to go through each stage of hell in which he believed she would be in. Being that he had gone through each stage of hell, one worse than the last, he did not give up and kept striving and going. Along with that, Beatrice remained loving Dante praying for his well-being and hoping for him to get to her in one piece. Love clearly plays an important factor being that it shows the true strength of love that kept Dante motivated as he went through each stage of hell literally to find who he believes to be his one true love.

Queen of Gods vs. Goddess of Love

Question: Consider the role that various gods and their moods and actions play in The Aeneid. It might make sense to focus especially on Juno and Venus.

Being that The Aeneid involves Greek mythology, the book would not be considered one without the gods and goddesses within the book. Each of the Gods and Goddesses plays their own role and are identified with their own focus, such as Juno who is the Queen of Gods and Venus, who is the Goddess of love. Gods and Goddesses have an impact on mortals within the book in which their fate is decided by them.

In The Aeneid, the main goal for Aeneas was to fight for the Trojans in which he has promised them a new city. Juno, the Queen of Gods despises the Trojans and does her best to make sure that Aeneas is destroyed and that he is not able to fulfill his goals. On the other hand, being that Juno’s primary goal is to make sure that Aeneas and the Trojans are destroyed, his mother, Venus does her best to make sure that nothing is done to him. She tries to protect him throughout the entire book each time a conflict is thrown upon Aeneas throughout his journey. As Juno keeps an eye on Aeneas’s every move, so does his mother to make sure nothing happens to him. Gods and Goddesses role within the book are either to destroy you if they have something against you or your people or they try to help you with the help of the other Gods and Goddesses that are willing to. Juno and Venus both play an important role in the book and shows a number of powers and affect that each one of these Gods/Goddesses has upon mortals along with the power of love and evil.

Classifying the Odyssey

Question: What is the genre of The Odyssey? Is it simply an epic poem? The first novel? A collection of myths? A fable or allegory? Or a composite genre, some combination of these?

Answer: Many would believe that The Odyssey would only be classified as an epic poem genre book due to simply the format which is written as a poem. First and foremost, it is clear that the book is written after the book, The Illiad. The Odyssey’s plot deals with what happened post-war in which The Illiad was about Odysseus’s Trojan War. Although both books are in a poem format, as you continue to read throughout and within, you realize that the content makes it more than a poem. The book consists of Greek gods and goddesses in which it is clear that there is greek mythology throughout the entire book. Being those Greek gods and goddesses are not factual, many would also say that this is a fable.

Being those Greek gods and goddesses are not factual, many would also say that this is a fable. This can only be an allegory based genre being that it is a story being told by the protagonist, Odysseus himself of what happened post-war. Throughout the entire poem, there are hidden meanings behind each line any poem does.

The Odyssey is clearly classified as a composite genre book being that it consists of multiple genres; a mix of mythology, epic poetry, fable, allegory, quests and much more.
