Relationship between Dante and Virgil

Virgil plays a pivotal role in Dante’s journey through hell as his guide. In addition, Virgil pushes Dante to continue and not give up during various moments in the journey and protects him from the demons that they encounter. During some occasions, Dante appeared powerless, yet Virgil comforted him and helped him gain some confidence. Virgil’s wisdom and noble virtues help Dante get through the obstacles that kept preventing him from reaching his goal. Therefore, Virgil was the main reason Dante made it through this journey.

  1. I like your answer. Virgil is more likely to be the mentor of Dante, taking care of and enlighten Dante . Virgil plays same role as Athena in The Odyssey who directors the life path for the main character. In the end, these life mentors all help main characters finish their mission.

  2. I agree with your statement. Virgil serves as both a guide and mentor to Dante along his journey in Hell and Purgatory. Throughout the journey, Virgil explains to Dante the different kinds of sins committed at each of the Circles of Hell. Virgil also has to continuously give an explanation for Dante’s presence to hosts and demons in the underworld. If it wasn’t for Virgil’s support, Dante most likely wouldn’t have overcame his obstacles by himself and eventually arrived through Hell and the mountains of Purgatory.
