Great Works of Literature, Fall 2016 (hybrid)

Is Othello a tragic hero or not? Does he have a tragic flaw or series of them? Why or why not?

Othello is a hero due to his successful careers served in the army and politics in the beginning of the play . As plots develop later on ,Othello seems more like a tragic hero. Even he is intelligent, having high statues, he fails to see through the conspiracy, which is set by Iago. When he doubts Desdemona, he fails to communicate with Desdemona. In the end ,he murders Desdemona because of his jealousy. When Othello deals with love makes him different from the one who has successful careers in military and politics, and that is what makes him a tragic hero.

  1. Good point. Othello definitely portrays the role of a tragic hero. Throughout the play, jealousy plays a major role for Othello and shows how one emotion can negatively impact your life in which leads to a tragic ending. He was once known to be a true hero of war into a monster who ends up murdering his own wife that he truly loved. He let jealousy take control and destroy himself.

  2. I like how you argue that tragic part of Othello’s heroism lies behind his inability to manage love and keep his jealousy under control. Although he’s a war hero, very respected for everything he did, Othello becomes weak because of love which goes on to such extent that he commits a murder because of jealousy. It sends a message that even greatest heroes become weak in front of the forces of love and everything love carries with her.
